Pope Francis just completed his trip to Krakow, Poland, celebrating with great enthusiasm the gifts of life and faith with millions of young people gathered for World Youth Day. I was privileged to have experienced WYD in Denver with Pope Saint John Paul II many years ago as a seminarian. It is a life-changing event for many, touching the hearts of the young; letting them know that they are never alone; assuring them that God loves them and is calling them to allow God to work through them to change the world. The days are filled with signing, praying, playing and making new friends from different countries throughout the world. On Friday evening the Holy Father noticeably changed the tone of the celebrations as all gathered to celebrate the Way of the Cross (the Stations). Earlier that morning he had visited the death camp, Auschwitz. He then went to visit sick children at a pediatric hospital. Earlier in the week a French priest s throat was slit, executed by an Islamic State assassin. Pope Francis spoke to the crowds, pointedly asking, Where is God when innocent persons die as a result of violence, terrorism and war? He continued: Where is God, if evil is present in our world, if there are men and women who are hungry and thirsty, homeless, exiles and refugees? Where is God, when cruel diseases break the bonds of life and affection? Or when children are exploited and demeaned, and they too suffer from grave illness? Where is God amid the anguish of those who doubt and are troubled in spirit? These are questions which, humanly speaking, have no answer, the Pope said. We can only look to Jesus and ask him. And Jesus answer is this: God is in them. Jesus is in them; he suffers in them and deeply identifies with each of them. He is so closely united to them as to form with them, as it were, one body. The Way of the Cross, Pope Francis said, is a reminder of the importance of imitating Jesus through the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy, which he then listed. Through the corporal works of mercy feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick and those in prison, and burying the dead the Pope told youth to serve the crucified Jesus, who is present in the marginalized, the disadvantaged, the persecuted, refugees and migrants. He then listed the spiritual works of mercy counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, admonishing sinners, consoling the afflicted, pardoning offenses, bearing wrongs patiently, praying for the living and the dead. In welcoming the outcast who suffer physically and welcoming sinners who suffer spiritually, our credibility as Christians is at stake. Our Holy Father speaks very often of the joy we are to bear as disciples of Christ. He does not say this lightly. Our joy includes and in fact arises from bearing in love the sufferings of others and our own, doing so in faith in Our Lord Jesus. May we seek to do so each day, the young and not so young among us. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and removed his body because it was the Jewish Day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. Jn 19:38,42 To bury the dead means caring for the remains of those who have died and, in a particular way, the indigent and forgotten. To bury the dead also means caring for those grieving and left behind by following up with them after the funeral and around the anniversary of death, for example, through outreach in your parish community. To bury the dead can also include the services rendered around funerals, such as planning, singing in a choir, and preparing meals. To bury the dead means caring for orphans and poor widows throughout the world, for example, through Catholic Charities or Catholic Relief Services.
