God Is Always Near It is hard to believe that this Sunday we mark the 15th anniversary of the day that our nation suffered the cowardly attack of terrorists on four fronts. As we remember and pray, perhaps the following piece I came across might give us pause to listen for the voice of God, knowing that He is always with us -- not just on 9-11, but in the midst of all of our sufferings and losses. You say you will never forget where you were when you heard the news on September 11, Neither will I. I was on the 110th floor in a smoke filled room with a man who called his wife to say, 'Good-bye.' I held his fingers steady as he dialed. I gave him the peace to say, 'Honey, I am not going to make it, but it is OK. I am ready to go.' I was with his wife when he called as she fed breakfast to their children. I held her up as she tried to understand his words and as she realized he wasn't coming home that night. I was in the stairwell of the 23rd floor when a woman cried out to Me for help. 'I have been knocking on the door of your heart for 50 years!' I said. 'Of course I will show you the way home - only believe in Me now.' I was at the base of the building with the Priest ministering to the injured and devastated souls. I took him home to tend to his Flock in Heaven. He heard my voice and answered. I was on all four of those planes, in every seat, with every prayer. I was with the crew as they were overtaken. I was in the very hearts of the believers there, comforting and assuring them that their faith has saved them. I was in Texas, Virginia, California, Michigan, Afghanistan. I was standing next to you when you heard the terrible news. Did you sense Me? I want you to know that I saw every face. I knew every name - though not all knew Me. Some met Me for the first time on the 86th floor. Some sought Me with their last breath. Some couldn't hear Me calling to them through the smoke and flames; 'Come to Me... this way... take my hand.' Some chose, for the final time, to ignore Me. But, I was there. I did not place you in the Tower that day. You may not know why, but I do. However, if you were there in that explosive moment in time, would you have reached for Me? Sept. 11, 2001, was not the end of the journey for you. But someday your journey will end. And I will be there for you as well. Seek Me now while I may be found. Then, at any moment, you know you are 'ready to go.' Have a blessed week, May we introduce to you... Steve Geerling is a transitional deacon from the Diocese of Grand Rapids, MI. He is studying at Mundelein Seminary in his final year of formation before his priestly ordination next June. Steve was a mail carrier for 13 years. It was after much prayer and discernment that he felt God calling him to be a priest. He will be assigned at Our Lady of Ransom as a deacon through April of He looks forward to praying with and getting to know our parish community.

Our RCIA program begins September 18. We welcome and encourage anyone who would like to learn more about the Catholic faith to attend these sessions. It is especially for adults who were never baptized, or who were baptized in another Christian faith and who may now wish to become Catholic, or those who were baptized Catholic but never received the sacrament of Confirmation. If you have questions about this process, please contact Fr. Chris or one of our deacons at Embers Elementary Part-Time Job Opportunity Aftercare Program Embers Elementary, 8340 N. Greenwood in Niles, is looking to hire an afterschool care staffer to supervise PK-5th students on Mondays and Fridays, 3:20-5:30 p.m. The staffer would be assisted by a high school student. The aftercare group averages 8-15 students. Duties include helping students in 2nd-5th with homework, serving a snack, and supervising outdoor and indoor play. Good hourly rate and a positive school environment. Volunteers will be available to accept donations of gently used clothing, shoes, linens, small working appliances, kitchen and household items and furniture. This is a picture of Justine Rothstein and Sue O Hagan as they help prepare the God Bless You bags filled with new socks, fruit, toiletries, and candy! This is a favorite of our needy friends. Soup Kitchen Committee We have many exciting events planned for the new year! On Tuesday, September 20th we will celebrate Holy Mass at 6:30pm followed by a BINGO BASH play for prizes, not cash! Everyone over 18 is welcome to attend at $1 a card. You might be a winner! Refreshments will follow. Tickets for the Tuesday, October 18th CASINO TRIP to 4 Winds in New Buffalo, Michigan, will be available at $31 each. (This includes $10 towards food, and $15 for gambling.) This trip will fill up fast, so be prepared to reserve your place on the bus that night! Dues remain at $10, and can be paid that night or bring the pink envelope from your OLR packet to any Mass with your dues enclosed. In November a demonstration of food may be our program.
