This past Tuesday morning we received news from the Vatican that our Holy Father has appointed three new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Chicago Bishops-Elect Mark Bartosic, Robert Casey and Ronald Hicks. I am thrilled with the news as I have known all three of these men for nearly 30 years and they are each exceptional, faith-filled priests who have cultivated their natural gifts and talents through God s grace, using them faithfully in the service of God s people. Through the power of the Holy Spirit these men will be consecrated on September 17th at Holy Name Cathedral, receiving a new level of the Sacrament of Ordination (the three levels being Diaconate, Priesthood and Episcopacy) and become successors to the Apostles. The announcement is also welcome news as it is predicated on our Holy Father accepting the resignation of auxiliary bishops Francis Kane and George Rassas. They have served our Archdiocese so well and have surpassed their 75th birthdays which is the ordinary retirement age for bishops. They deserve some rest! Bishop Kane is an especially great friend of our parish and we will greatly miss his humble, supportive leadership. We can be confident that both men will continue to contribute generously to God s people in their retirement years. This may be an apt opportunity to say a word about the visible structure of the Church. The whole world is divided geographically into dioceses, each with a bishop called an Ordinary. Each diocese, in turn, is divided geographically into parishes with a pastor as servant leader. In recent years membership in a parish has been based less on geographical grounds than by the choice of the faithful. Larger, more populated and complex dioceses are deemed archdioceses, each with an archbishop as Ordinary, and often with auxiliary bishops who assist him. The Archdiocese of Chicago is the third largest in the United States, serving more than 2.2 million Catholics in 344 parishes in Cook and Lake Counties. Its geographic area of 1,411 square miles is divided into six sections called Vicariates, each with an auxiliary bishop serving as Vicar. Bishops-elect Bartosic and Casey will assume that role, presumably filling the vacancies in Vicariate 1 (Lake County) and Vicariate II (to which we belong). Bishop-elect Hicks will continue to serve as Vicar General of the Archdiocese. Our Cardinal Archbishop Cupich is, of course, the chief shepherd for the Archdiocese. In addition to the pastoral administration of their given vicariates, much of an auxiliary bishop s time is spent administering the Sacrament of Confirmation at parishes throughout the archdiocese. While we may be inclined to look at one s being named a bishop as a promotion, to do so is to really impose a secular view on it. Positions in the Church, at their best, are not about power, but about service. They are to model Christ who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for the many. Mt 20:28. Bishops-elect Bartosic, Casey and Hicks have proven their desire and capability to serve God s people well. Please keep them in your prayers that they may fulfill that commitment in their new roles of service. Have a blessed week,

With divisions, immorality, persecution, and other trials of the faithful, the message of St. Paul to the Corinthians is a much-needed message for our own times. First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community explores the key elements that the apostle Paul introduced to a new and growing Church. St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the nature of grace and the Church as the Body of Christ. In addition, he introduced the Corinthian Christians to the most powerful gift of all, the Eucharist. You Will: Learn the importance of Christian unity in relation to the Church as the Body of Christ. Explore St. Paul's strategy for successful evangelization. See how to live a Christian life in the midst of a pagan culture. Discover why St. Paul sees the Church as the Body of Christ. Learn how St. Paul's letter proves that the sacrifice of Christ is truly made present in the Eucharist. Gain a new vision for seeing the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. The format of our studies include light reading assignments and questions to answer at home; small group discussions led by experienced facilitators to discuss the homework and share insights gained; concludes with a 30 minute DVD presentation that wraps up the week s lesson. These studies are designed for both the beginner and veteran bible study participant. We will begin our 11 week study of First Corinthians on Wednesday, September 5.
