1 Fifth Sunday of Easter April 24, 2016 Readings: Acts 14: 21-27; Rev 21: 1-5; Jn 13: 31-33,34-35 THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear friends, A Divine inner guiding force has always been part of our Catholic doctrine. In particular, the sacrament of initiation celebrates a divine love that is so great that God chooses to live within us and among us. In baptism we are immersed into the paschal mystery of Jesus, dying to self so that we might rise to new life in Jesus. We are sealed in baptism with the gift of the Holy Spirit and strengthened in Confirmation to live this new life. In the Eucharist we are nourished by Jesus Body and Blood and by eating and drinking this food, we become what we eat the Body of Christ in whom God lives in glory. The challenge, of course, is that these sacraments remain not simply actions we simply go through, but become dynamic ways of living. This is one reason why we celebrate liturgy each Sunday so that we remember Jesus words and deeds. One practice that might help us make this practical in our daily living and over the years see real spiritual growth in ourselves is to make sure that we take just one thought one idea that leads to specific action in our daily living from each Sunday celebration. This week we might ask ourselves, how do I express to others that God dwells within me? How does this week s gospel challenge me to live? At the end of every mass we are blessed, then sent forth to live what we have celebrated. It s so easy to be eager to leave church and get on with the rest of our day, that we can readily miss the importance of this short but important rite. One of the dismissals in the Roman Missal is, Go in peace, glorifying the Lord, by your life. This speaks directly to this Sunday s gospel. We glorify the Lord when we follow through on His new commandment of love. This love is not the type of shallow and fleeting love that s projected by the entertainment industry, but it s the life giving love that Jesus modeled for us. Our daily living must be characterized by the kind of self-giving love that brings us to put the needs of others before our own. It s the kind of love that prompts us to empty ourselves for the sake of others, no matter what the cost. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
