1 216 N Main Street Suffolk VA Our Mission is to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ by sharing God s grace, love, and forgiveness. Our Mission is to Reach Out to Our Community and Our World. Our Vision: We Worship. We Disciple. We Serve. February 2019 February s Mission: Please use the YELLOW tithing envelope to support this mission Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk (CAPS) Working together as one body makes us more effective in seeking the welfare of our city, imaging Christ in our community, and helping residents of Suffolk who are going through a crisis The Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk has served over 1000 individuals since we began in August of When CAPS receives requests for assistance, the staff assesses the situation, discusses financial issues, talks with the individual about long-term solutions, prays with the individual and assists financially if appropriate. CAPS partners with local help agencies, creating a network that ensures individuals are served in the best way possible. In addition to providing crisis assistance, CAPS started the Night Stay Program as a rotating shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness during winter months. Churches come together to host homeless guests and provide food, shelter and safety during the coldest months of the year. CAPS works with these individuals to help them find long-term housing and financial stability. Our Vision We envision Suffolk churches and organizations united and empowered to accomplish Christ s commission. We envision individuals and families living with dignity as they participate in CAPS ministries and experience holistic gospel transformation. Our Mission CAPS is a group of churches and organizations working together for poverty alleviation and community development. By sharing resources, information and support our efforts are synergized for the development of our city.

4 Coats for the Community Thank you, one and all, for your help with this year s project. Your donations of coats and cash were greatly appreciated. A sincere thank you also goes to all who participated in a hands-on way. We had several new faces among those who came to church to sort coats, to help distribute and to clean up. Through generous donations from you and area schools and churches we had about 1000 coats and many sweaters and other cold weather gear. Approximately 75 people came and selected coats for about 300 people. Those who came left our church delighted to have a warm winter coat for each member of their family and a bag full of sweaters, hats, scarves and mittens. We have stored the nicest of the remaining coats and if you know of anyone in the community who needs a coat please see a member of the Adult Bible Class and it can be arranged to accommodate that need. Chili and Baked Potato Luncheon February 17, noon On Sunday, February 17, immediately following the 11 o'clock worship service, a baked potato and chili lunch will be served by the Churchwide Fellowship. The cost will be $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children 12 and under. There will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board outside the church office. Proceeds will benefit the Churchwide Fellowship Fund. 9 To our church family, Jim and I are so appreciative of all the kindnesses you have shown us in the past eight months. We particularly appreciate your prayers. We covet your prayers as he continues to heal. In Christ, Jim & Linda Culliton As you will recall the Thanksgiving Dinner Auction proceeds went to Rick and Cheryl Pearce (Judy Eure's nephew) who lost his home and everything in the flooding from Hurricane Florence. We were able to send them a check in the amount of $2,000. Below is a letter which we received from the Pearce's: Dear Church friends, Words cannot begin to express how grateful we are for your generous gift. It has been overwhelming at times to see how good and faithful God has been throughout this whole situation, even when sometimes we re not. He has used what would have otherwise been devastating, and turned it around for good. And not just for us, but for our whole family as well. All of our four kids were displaced as a result of the flooding, some of them losing almost everything, yet almost all of them are in a better situation than they were in before, and only one is still displaced. God saw a much bigger picture than any of us could ever see, He just needs us to trust in Him to lead us through to the other side. I have a story to tell about how God has closed some doors for us and opened others, and I would love to have the opportunity to share it with you. We are trying to plan a trip up there to visit family, and we would love the opportunity to stop by the church and visit with all of you as well. Thank you again for being faithful to God s leading. Gestures like these have far-reaching effects, far beyond our little circles. It s like a ripple effect of God s goodness! I look forward to seeing you soon. Sincerely, Rick & Cheryl Pearce Night Stay January 2019 Thank you to everyone who helped with meals during our week of Night Stay. If your board, Sunday School or circle wasn t able to do a meal this time, please consider doing a meal during our week in March. The dates for March are the 20 th 27 th. Please see Priscilla Bunch if you are able to help! The following flower contributions were omitted from the listing of Christmas flowers. A poinsettia was given in honor of Margaret Saunders, by Karen and Wes Rose. A poinsettia was given in memory of Richard Saunders, by Karen and Wes Rose.
