TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the most memorable images from the pontificate of Pope John Paul II is not his shocked expression as he is hit by a bullet, but rather his tender meeting with his assailant, and his forgiveness. It is far more compelling because, although people are struck by bullets every day, true reconciliation is in relatively short supply. An outside observer might list attempting to kill the pope as an unforgiveable sin, but of course we know that forgiveness of sin is woven deeply into our tradition of living as Christ did. Interestingly enough, the Church took a hard line on these matters early on. Until the second century, people expected Christ s return in the near future, so they deferred judgment to him. Soon, however, bishops began to grant forgiveness for sin after baptism, but only once. What we know as the sacrament of penance takes its life from Jesus work of reconciliation, but just as scripture shows Jesus forgiving people in one life-changing encounter, so the church granted one chance only. Great sins were the target, such as idolatry, adultery, and murder. Penance was lengthy, difficult, and public, and the bishop was in charge of the process. For the next several weeks, we ll look at subsequent creative and helpful changes in the celebration of this sacrament. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. It is one the prophet obviously cherishes despite the derision and reproach it brings him. In the Gospel, Jesus indicates a similar bond with his Father. In spite of the difficult challenges presented by following God s will, Jesus is not deterred. Giving up our own worldly cares and dreams, even as we accept pain and suffering, is more than a fair exchange for doing the will of God. The only way to do God s will is offer our whole selves to God. As St. Paul writes in the Letter to the Romans: Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2a). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 3 From the Pastor As I write this I am about to go on vacation. As you read this, I have already returned. Where did I go? I am very blessed to have some very good friends whom I have known for thirty years who own a cottage on Conesus Lake in western New York State. Conesus Lake is the westernmost of the Finger Lakes, thirty miles south of Rochester. It is ideal for swimming, boating, fishing, and waterskiing, or just looking at the water and listening to it lap up against the shore. I am not much into fishing or waterskiing, but I do like to swim (with the help of fins) and I love being out on a boat. Fortunately, my friends own a small sailboat. It is remarkably peaceful to be out on the water in a sailboat with only the sound of wind and water. It is truly exhilarating. Conesus Lake is near the town of Geneseo, which is the seat of Livingtson County and home to a campus of the State University of New York (SUNY). The university and courthouse dominate the life and economy of the town, which is centered upon a typically American main street. The presence of the university students gives the town a youthful flavor. Nearby, in the town of Piffard, is the Abbey of the Genesee, a Trappist monastery where the famous spiritual writer Henri Nouwen spent some time. The monastery chapel is made of wood and stone and beautifully colorful stained glass, all put together in the simple, austere style of the Cistercian order. I enjoy visiting the monastery frequently and joining the monks in their singing of the Divine Office. The monastery also operates a bakery which sells fresh bread and other delicious baked goods daily. I spend most of my time by the water swimming, or reading, or just relaxing. It is a beautiful place that is very conducive to prayer and meditation. My friends are generous in including me in the life of their family as they take their vacation, so I have plenty of time to be with others, but also time to be by myself. For me, it is an ideal vacation. I am very blessed. As you know, this is the Labor Day weekend, a very special time for our Greenbelt community. As usual, St. Hugh s is represented at the city s Labor Day Festival by the Knights of Columbus, who are operating a sausage booth, and our CYO, Youth Group, and Ladies of Charity, who are conducting the ever-popular bingo. We wish them all the best in their fundraising activities and thank them for representing the face of St. Hugh in our community. Enjoy the weekend as we mark the official end of summer. Yours in Christ, Father Walter Focus on Ministry - The Ladies of Charity The Ladies of Charity of St. Hugh are usually working quietly but accomplishing much. They provide much needed assistance to members of the parish as well as throughout Greenbelt. They are in charge of The Food Pantry which provided about 780 large bags of food this year to those in need. The food comes from many sources--parishioners, shoppers at Co-op, members of Mishkan Torah Synagogue, the Boy Scout food collections, Curves, and others. A small group of women meet every Friday and sort food donations and prepare bags of food to be given out to those who come to the Rectory door. Rectory staff receive the requests for food assistance and hand out the food. Another major project is helping residents who may be facing eviction from their apartments. Sometimes sickness or temporary job loss leave the family with no money for rent. Again, often with assistance of other organizations in the city, like Greenbelt Cares, we help with rent. This past year $7,000 helped Greenbelt families avoid eviction due to our parishioners generosity. We worked closely with the Knights of Columbus this year to help prevent the eviction of a young purple heart awarded veteran and his family and provided food/clothing/diapers until the veteranʹs service connected benefits were started with the assistance of Congressman Steny Hoyerʹs Office. The Knights also worked with the Ladies to provide turkeys and personal care items to go in the Thanksgiving food bags for pantry recipients. Our mission includes working with the very young through seniors. Weʹve provided layettes and baby clothes to pregnant women in need through the Gabriel Project and through our affiliation with St. Annʹs Home for Homeless Women with Children. We provide socks, personal care items and Christmas gifts to mentally ill patients at Spring Grove Hospital. We sponsor a birthday party each April at the Sacred Heart Nursing Home in Hyattsville and provide a birthday gift to the April born residents and smaller goodie bags to the other residents attending party. It seems as if there are always projects to be undertaken. We are always looking for more women to join our group. Several years ago, we changed our meeting from day to evening to accommodate working women. Our meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 7pm in Grenoble Hall. Our main sources of funds are donations, bequests from families of deceased parishioners, poor box funds, Alternative Christmas Program and a newer source, The St. Hugh Labor Day Weekend Bingo. If you would like to become a Lady of Charity, please contact Mary Ann Tretler (301) for more information. Our first meeting of the new season will be this coming Tuesday, September in Grenoble Hall.
