3 Breaking open the Word 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection Do you ever wonder what happened to the nine lepers who did not turn back and thank Jesus for the gift of their healing? Were they ever cognizant of what had happened in that healing moment? Did they later give thanks? All 10 received the gift of healing, the gift given freely both to the one who was grateful and the nine who went on their way with no outward sign of gratitude. Only the one saw the gift for what it was and returned to give thanks. How often we, too, go through life oblivious to the gifts we are given daily. How often we fail to rest in the moment, to see the gift, to savor it and to give thanks. In the last exercise in St. Ignatius Loyola s Spiritual Exercises one is asked to recall the gifts of one s life: one s birth, baptism, family, children, redemption, grace, qualities, and talents everything we have to be grateful for. Then, in gratitude for these gifts that God has given us and that includes the Divine himself one offers it all, including oneself, back to God. God loves us with a depth our human minds cannot begin to grasp. That love is an invitation for us to love Him back and to love others. Are we like the nine lepers who walked on oblivious or the one who was aware of God s action, who lived in the moment of God s presence? Mary is a powerful intercessor for us. Faith sharing St. Augustine s Faith Formation class meets the third Monday of each month for prayer, reflection and faith sharing. We are using Henri Nouwen s book Here and Now: Living in the Spirit. In this book of meditations Henri Nouwen tells us how God is close to us in our daily lives, much closer than we usually realize. We gather for prayer, reflection and faith sharing in each class. Our next gathering will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 in the Damien Meeting Room. All are welcome to join us. Copies of Here and Now may be purchased in the parish office. Family Promise opportunity in October Our next Family Promise weeks are October and offer a way for parishioners to help homeless families. Holy Trinity Parish participates in Family Promise by providing lodging and meals for three to five families for two weeks every quarter. St. Augustine is helping Holy Trinity and Tongan youth and young adults from the parish cleaned the house where the families will live on Oct. 5. A parishioner also dropped off a large supply of household goods this past week. Parishioners are also providing a dinner and after-dinner musical entertainment on Oct. 26. There is still time to sign up to help with the dinner or to drop off a monetary donation to help defray the cost of the household supplies. Please call the parish office if you would like to help.. Soup Kitchen served over 900 last month The St. Augustine Soup Kitchen served more than 900 hot meals in September. The Soup Kitchen is one of our ministries to those in our midst who lack adequate food and is supported by donations from parishioners and visitors. Your financial support makes you a part of this ministry and is one way we are living examples of the Gospel message of service and ministry. Our musical termites Termites have taken up residence in our heavenly organ and the damage is such that the organ must be replaced. The replacement cost is $100,000. If you might be interested in helping purchase this new organ, please contact Fr. Lane. Mahalo. All Souls Day, Immaculate Conception The Feast of All Souls (Nov. 2) is on a Saturday this year. It will be celebrated at the morning Mass that Saturday, but the evening Vigil Mass will be for the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time. Also, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (Dec. 8) this year falls on the Second Sunday in Advent. In accordance with the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, the observance of the feast transfers to Monday, Dec. 9. However, Dec. 9 will not be a holy day of obligation.

4 Sacred Hearts missionaries from India With the upcoming SS.CC. United States Province Assembly in October, seven of our Sacred Hearts missionaries will be stop in Hawaii on their way home after our meeting. On the weekend of October 12 & 13, a mission appeal for our Sacred Hearts Mission in India will be taken up to support the numerous projects there. There will be a collection taken up and envelopes will be available at the church entrances. Mahalo in advance for your kokua and support. On October 14 at 6 p.m. in the Church, there will be a special concert and presentation of Thanksgiving for our India Mission. There are many never-seen-before portraits from the early 1900s that offer a rare and compelling glimpse of life in the land of exile. The Heritage Center is in front of the church in the ABC Building on the second floor. It is open daily. A lift is available for those with special needs. For arrangements for groups of 20 or more, call Damien statue by Maui artist We are seeking to commission a bronze outdoor statue of St. Damien by Maui artist Gary Thomas. The statue, Damien...Through the Spirit, is a depiction of Father Damien, who gave of himself to care for those banished to Molokai because they had Hansen s Disease.
