Mass to Commemorate Our Beloved Departed Each year our parish gathers as a community of faith to remember all our beloved departed, especially those who have died in the past year. Our All Souls Mass will be tomorrow, Monday November 2 at 7pm. Food Pantry Special Thanksgiving Food Collection: During the month of November the Food Pantry will be collecting items for recipientsʹ Thanksgiving Dinner Bags. We would appreciate donations of boxed stuffing, boxed potatoes, gravy packages, canned sweet potatoes, boxed desserts, canned frosting, canned vegetables and other non-perishable Thanksgiving dinner items. 3 From the Pastor Dear Parishioners, In this year of the Synod on the Family, the Church is renewing her commitment to form and support Christian families, the basic building block of our society. The health of a society is measured by the health of its families. Similarly, the health of our parish community is measured by the health of each of its families. Family life is rooted in the lifelong covenant of marriage between a man and woman, who pledge themselves to a common life of mutual respect and love for the sake of conceiving and raising children to respond to their divine calling to becoming sharers in the life of God. Family life is meant to be rooted in faith and lived out in charity. The Church has a special responsibility to minister faith to her families and provide a loving home where they can experience the love of God and be built up in love. With this in view, we are forming a new ministry at St. Hugh s whose focus is on the family. Our CYO is now becoming CFM, which stands for Catholic Family Ministry. The mission of the organization is to promote family life in the parish, with a particular focus on families with children ages 13 and below. CFM will provide opportunities for parish families to get to know each other and support each other in their calling to be Christian fathers, mothers, and children. CFM will be tasked with providing programs and events in the parish that will meet the social, spiritual and service needs of our families. In these days when the culture is producing many negative and toxic influences that threaten the integrity of family life, it is all the more important that believers support one another in the Christian vision of marriage and family. The Lord Jesus has a definite plan for marriage and family. We want to be faithful to his plan and live it out hopefully and joyfully with the help of his grace. But we must help each other to do it. That is why the Lord has called us to be members of his holy Body, the Church, so that we become a family of families, living out our Christian calling in an atmosphere of faith, hope and love, centered around our worship of God in the Holy Eucharist. St. Hugh s CFM is directed by a board which operates under the pastor s guidance in cooperation with other parish organizations, especially with the parish School of Religion. The members of the CYO board have now become members of the CFM with some new additions. The board members are : Debbie Clarke, president, Barbara Ford, treasurer and secretary, Rohanie Bacchus, Susan Mathis, Katie and Joel Sage. Mary Wade, who directs our School of Religion, is an ex officio member of the board. The CFM is sponsoring the Little Flowers Girls Club, a new faith learning program for girls in the parish, and well as a parish-wide Christmas Pageant that will take place on the Saturday before Christmas. It will continue to sponsor the Halloween Party, Lenten fish fry, and Spring Luau. There are hopes to widen the opportunities for the children and families of our parish to come together for prayer, service and social activities. If you have ideas for events and programs to serve better our parish families, please contact me or any of the CFM board members. And please, keep this new organization and its ministerial outreach in your prayers. Yours in Christ, Father Walter FROM THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION The National Catholic Educational Association has declared November 1-7, 2015 National Parish Religious Education Week! As you browse the saints display in Grenoble Hall keep in mind that we are all saints-in-formation and that our parish, the local Church, is a school for learning how to live, in the grace of Christ and cooperation with the Holy Spirit to grow in holiness. Remember: Itʹs not how you start, itʹs how you finish. We thank all those who have helped us along our life-long faith journey. Special Dates: November 2nd: Parish All Souls Mass at 7pm. 4 St.Hugh s CYO News Many thanks to all who came and enjoyed a great gathering of Lil Mermaids, Beautiful Princesses, Super Heroes and many more, even a Little Lamb! What a wonderful time with friends and family. Special thanks to St. Hugh s Knights of Columbus, Ladies of Isabella, Ladies of Charity and Sodality of Our Lady for your assistance in making this the best Halloween Party ever! Thank you to the families from St. Joseph s for turning up in great numbers. It was a real pleasure sharing such great fun with you. To everyone who has been there year after year lending your labor and support to St. Hugh s CYO events. Thank you so very much and may God bless you for your tireless efforts in making sure all goes well. We look forward to continuing to serve the parish as CFM. ENJOY SINGING? The Greenbelt Interfaith Choir will be practicing for the Thanksgiving Eve Interfaith Service at St. Hugh Church on the following dates: Monday, November 9th, Monday, November 16th and Monday, November 23rd at 7:30pm. The Choir is led by Jean Cook, former choir director at St. Hugh. If you would like to sing with us, please come on Monday, November 9th for practice. Any questions/concerns, call Mary Ann Tretler CFM Activities Little Flowers had their inaugural meeting on Saturday October 24, 1-3pm. This is going to be a great program for our young girls ages For more information contact Rohanie Bacchus or Susan Mathis. All children in the parish and their parents are invited to attend an informational meeting concerning a church-wide Christmas Pageant that will take place on Saturday evening, December 19, in Grenoble Hall. The pageant is being sponsored by St. Hughʹs Catholic Family Ministry (CFM). There will be enough parts for everyone, from the youngest child up. However, it is very important that anyone wishing to have a speaking role attend the meeting, to be held in the school gym at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7. If your child would like to participate in the pageant, but will not be able to make the meeting, please Susan Mathis at jsmathis@comcast.net for more information. From the Ladies of Charity Ladies of Charity Coat Collection: St. Hugh Ladies of Charity is again partnering with Sacred Heart Church in Bowie, MD to collect gently used winter coats, scarves, and gloves for those in need in Prince Georgeʹs County from the month of October through January. Please drop off your items to Grenoble Hall. Any questions, please call Mary Ann Tretler, Day of Reflection: All members of the parish are invited to a Day of Reflection on Saturday, November 14 at St. Hugh. The speaker will be Dr. Susan Timoney, Executive Director of the Office of Evangelization and Family Life for the Archdiocese of Washington. She will be speaking on the ʺWomen Doctors of the Churchʺ. The program will begin following the 9am morning Mass. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Come see how these four great women of the Church can influence our lives. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: Join us next weekend at St. Hughʹs Annual Christmas Bazaar and get a jump start on your Christmas Shopping, Saturday, November 7th, 9:00 am till 2:00 pm, and Sunday, November 8th, 9:00 am till 1:00 pm. Santa will visit us on Sunday. There is something for everyone. Great Gifts, Great food, and Great friends. Blanket Drive for Syrian Refugees: The Ladies of Charity and the Greenbelt Interfaith Leadership Association (GILA) are partnering to collect new and gently used blankets for Syrian Refugees. The blanket donations will be accepted from October through November. You can leave your blanket donations in the marked boxes at the back of the church. Raking will begin in November the weekend after the Christmas Bazaar. We have some great initiatives in progress this year; we have an ongoing challenge in different ways to incorporate MATH, we made our pledges to walk with Francis, we just completed our Change the World campaign for World Food Day. In the month of October alone we have raised over $ to donate to different charities to fight hunger and breast cancer. It is amazing how wonderful our school community is!
