3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are in the section of the creed section of the Catechism under the article I Believe in Jesus Christ the Only Son of God. Here are this week s three questions, with the catechism s answer and my commentary. What is the meaning of the title Lord? In the Bible this title regularly designates God as Sovereign. Jesus ascribed this title to himself and revealed his divine sovereignty by his power over nature, over demons, over sin, and over death, above all by his own Resurrection. The first Christian creeds proclaimed that the power, the honor, and the glory that are due to God the Father also belong to Jesus: God has given him the name which is above every other name (Philippians 2:9). He is the Lord of the world and of history, the only One to whom we must completely submit our personal freedom. Commentary: We saw in a previous question how the divine name YHWH, given by God to Moses at Mt Horeb, was not pronounced by the people of the Old Covenant out of respect, but was always replaced in speech with the title Lord, a word that connotes God s sovereign power over creation and over his people. When the followers of Christ began to call him Lord they were very purposefully assigning to him the divine Name, the Name which is above every other name. Jesus followers recognized that he was more than a man of exceptional holiness, but was truly Emmanuel, God with us. Why did the Son of God become man? For us men and for our salvation, the Son of God became incarnate in the womb of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. He did so to reconcile us sinners with God, to have us learn of God s infinite love, to be our model of holiness, and to make us partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) Commentary: God became man for us men, i.e., for our sake and because of his great love for us, and for our salvation, i.e., for the restoration of the freedom and holiness which the human race lost because of the original sin. The salvation wrought by the Incarnation of God s Son, which culminated in his death and resurrection (what we call the Paschal Mystery ), has brought many great benefits to the human race. It has brought forgiveness of sins, healing for sins, and freedom from sin; it has also brought instruction in holiness, strength to do the works of holiness, and most of all, a sharing in the inner life of the Most Holy Trinity. What does the word Incarnation mean? The Church calls the mystery of the wonderful union of the divine and human natures in the one divine Person of the Word the Incarnation. To bring about our salvation the Son of God was made flesh (John 1:14) and became truly man. Faith in the Incarnation is a distinctive sign of the Christian faith. Commentary: God truly became man in the Person of Jesus Christ. He had a human body, a human soul, and a human mind. But his body, soul and mind were truly the human body, soul and mind of the Son of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Jesus, therefore, was not a human person, but a divine Person. His personal identity was that of the Only-Begotten Son of God. But this divine Person truly became a man, to heal our humanity but uniting it with his divinity. The union of the divine and human in Jesus is what we call the Incarnation, the central and distinctive article of Christian faith. Indeed, we refer to the Incarnation as the mystery of faith. FROM THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION Adult Faith Formation Opportunity: The School of Religion is offering a five session study program titled ʺA Biblical Walk through the Mass.ʺ The next session, which will look at the Introductory Rites of the Mass, will be on Sunday November 6 from 11am to Noon in the School library. Please contact Mary Wade if you have any questions. Thank you for your prayers! Our School of Religion year is off to a beautiful start. Thank you for keeping our families and catechists in your prayers!

To mark the Year of Mercy, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be recited after the 5 p.m. Mass on the third Saturday of every month through the end of the Jubilee Year. 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 16th In this Jubilee Year, let us allow God to surprise us. He never tires of casting open the doors of his heart and of repeating that he loves us and wants to share his love with us. (Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus) God casts open the doors of his heart to share his love, but is the door of your heart open to welcome him? Are there any doors in your heart that might be closed off to receiving that love right now? Spend some time today asking God to surprise you and open your heart fully to his redeeming love. Celebrate God s mercy with us this year at mercy.adw.org. Jubilee Year of Mercy October 16, 2016 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Though Jesus told today s parable more than two thousand years ago, human nature hasn t changed: we recognize both characters instantly. The merciless judge represents the corruption that has short-circuited justice throughout history; the distraught widow, society s perennially powerless, marginalized to what Pope Francis calls the peripheries by those who wield power but lack the mercy that could transfigure society with compassion. To confront such reality, Jesus bids us, pray always without becoming weary (Luke 18:1). Prayer opens our eyes to see others from Jesus perspective, and leads us to work for justice by coming to the aid of others with what Pope Francis extols as a higher standard, mercy. Thus, when Jesus asks, Will not God secure the rights of [God s] chosen ones? Will [God] be slow to answer? (18:7). We respond by making God s liberating work for others our own. [W]hen the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? (18:8). Yes, we respond and mercy! Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
