3 MINISTRY SIGN-UP CALENDAR FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER NOW IN THE SACRISTY Dear ministry members, please take time to stop by the Sacristy and sigh up for the month of OCTOBER. HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR SEPTEMBER Universal: Centrality of the Human Person That each may contribute to the common good and to the building of a society that places the human person at the center. Evangelization: Mission to Evangelize That by participating in the Sacraments and meditating on Scripture, Christians may become more aware of their mission to evangelize. WHAT DID FR. LARRY SAY? LITTLE FLOWERS GROUP Are you looking for a way to meet new friends, learn more about our Catholic faith, the saints, and virtues all while earning badges? Then look no further, Little Flowers is for you! There are 4 different wreaths, I will be leading Wreath 2 this year. If a Mom is interested in leading a different wreath, I would love to meet with you and work together, its really easy and fun! The wreaths are not necessarily cumulative so you don't have to have done the first wreath to do Wreath 2. The cost is low and there is no fundraising or selling involved. If you have questions or are interested, please contact me, Mrs. Krysten Pizzurro at krystbenjamin@yahoo.com While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. This father s love was unconditional. Some will read this Gospel and the parable of the Prodigal Son and immediately associate themselves with the younger son, coming back to the father looking for forgiveness, hoping for the best but prepared for a less than forgiving reception, to say the least. But this father s response to his wayward son is unbelievable. He runs out of the house; embraces this disrespectful son before he has a chance to say much of anything; puts the family ring: the family seal, on his finger and puts sandals on his feet, in effect giving him back his status in the family, a status that he had scorned and thrown away. How many of us can associate and empathize with that prodigal father? Then what happens? The elder son comes along. The one who s supposed to inherit everything when the father dies; he comes and he too disrespects his father. His father is having a party, and he refuses to go in to the house. He makes his father come out to him and the father does it. What kind of a fool is this father who lets both his sons walk all over him? How often are we like one of those sons? How often are we as generous and forgiving as this father? One way to interpret this story is that this father is God, and we are the sons. God relates to us with unconditional love and forgiveness as well as with a patience that is invincible. Do we relate to one another in the same way? Too often the answer is no, we don t. The invincible patience of God: What a great description of the Virtue of Patience. True patience is not about what I don t do in a particular situation. It s not about just waiting for something to happen. It s not passive. Invincible Patience actively and aggressively strives for self-discipline, self-control, forgiveness, and healing love. It can t be defeated. Sometimes we have to make hard choices in life, set priorities that may hurt, because they confront us with our own personal prejudices and vulnerabilities. I would ask myself: Am I the elder son or the younger son demanding what I feel is mine? Or am I the Father ready to embrace the stranger, both the stranger within my family, and the stranger outside my family. Am I ready to forgive, and embrace, and heal, and move on? What does it mean to be Catholic, to be Christian, to be a person of Faith, to be human? What does it mean for me to be a follower of Jesus in today s world? We Catholics are people of hope and reconciliation and healing. Let s find our faith and rejoice in it. Let s join the Prodigal Father at his party. Let s be people of a truly dynamic and Invincible patience, forgiveness, and love. Fr. Larry Smith S.J.
