TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henryʹs eldest daughter, Mary, restored the ʺold religionʺ in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called ʺBloody Maryʺ for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called ʺrecusants,ʺ from a Latin word meaning ʺrefuse,ʺ since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim ʺRecusancyʺ as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. 3 From the Pastor As we continue with the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium, we continue with the section entitled The Paschal Mystery in the Age of the Church. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. What is the function of the liturgical year? In the liturgical year the Church celebrates the whole mystery of Christ from his Incarnation to his return in glory. On set days the Church venerates with special love the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. The Church also keeps the memorials of saints who lived for Christ, who suffered with him, and who live with him in glory. Commentary: Human beings by nature live within the milieu of time. Our lives progress from moment to moment, never standing still but always advancing with the passage of time. When the Son of God became man, he entered into time and accomplished his saving works within time and over the course of his 33 years upon earth, especially during the three years of his public ministry from the time of his baptism in the Jordan until his passion and cross and his Resurrection on the third day. Therefore, it is fitting that the Church should remember and celebrate his saving deeds in a similar way, that is, within time and over the course of time. Thus, with the unfolding of the liturgical year with its various seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Ordinary Time, the Church recalls each of the Lord s s marvelous works which he undertook for our redemption. We also celebrate the saving effects of the Redemption in the lives of the saints, especially in the life of the foremost saint, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. What is the Liturgy of the Hours? The Liturgy of the Hours, which is the public and common prayer of the Church, is the prayer of Christ with his body, the Church. Through the Liturgy of the hours, the mystery of Christ, which we celebrate in the Eucharist, sanctifies and transforms the whole of each day. It is composed mainly of psalms, other biblical texts, and readings from the Fathers and spiritual masters. Commentary: From her earliest days, the Church maintained the Jewish custom of praying together as a community at set times during the day: in the morning, at the third hour (mid-morning), at the sixth hour (midday), at the ninth hour (mid-afternoon), in the evening, and at night. This liturgy of praise and thanksgiving is called the Liturgy of the Hours since its purpose is to sanctify the various hours of the day and night with prayer and the worship of God. The psalms from the Bible are the primary text used for this liturgy, as well as other Biblical texts from both the Old and New Testament. The Church also provides daily writings from the Fathers of the Church (the great teachers of the faith in the church s first centuries) and more modern spiritual masters to enrich the worship of the Liturgy of the Hours. The Liturgy of the Hours is celebrated each day by all priests and religious communities, and by many of the lay faithful who are aware of this great treasure of the Church and have made it a part of their daily worship. Does the Church need places in order to celebrate the liturgy? The worship in spirit and truth (John 4:24) of the New Covenant is not tied exclusively to any place because Christ is the true temple of God. Through him Christians and the whole Church become temples of the living God by the action of the Holy Spirit. Nonetheless, the people of God in their earthly condition need places in which the community can gather to celebrate the liturgy. Commentary: Since every Christian is a temple of the Holy Spirit in virtue of his or her baptism, every place a Christian is can become a place of worship. But since the worship of God should not be confined to the individual alone, but is most powerfully expressed in communal prayer, it is necessary to have a place where the community of the faithful may gather for corporate worship. These places of worship, set apart exclusively for the worship of God, are named for the Church herself. Therefore, we call them churches. Yours in Christ, Father Walter

We request that anyone interested can sign up to participate in Our Lady of Fatimaʹs Rosary Pilgrimage by making a commitment to host our Lady of Fatimaʹs icon and to pray the Rosary for one week. Beginning on a Wednesday, Rosary Guild members will bring an image of Our Lady of Fatima to the host household and will return the following Wednesday to take the image to its next stop on the pilgrimage. Rosaries and a Rosary Prayer Guide are provided. Please consider joining this wonderful devotion. 5 St. Hugh Rummage Sale: Our Annual Rummage Sale was a huge success. So many people donated such wonderful items for the sale and baked so many delicious baked goods. Our volunteers worked magic and the Rummage Sale profited more than $6, for our Church. For all who helped make our Rummage Sale a huge success: THANK YOU TO THE MOON AND BACK. We hope you enjoy your summer and we look forward to seeing you at the Bazaar on November 3rd and 4th. Over 1,000 books were delivered to the school on July 3rd by members of the Ladies of Charity. 6 Domestic Church Day with the Visit of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Join fellow Catholic couples and families for a Domestic Church Day on July 21 from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine. This half-day family retreat will include engaging catechesis for parents, teens, and children, an ice cream sundae bar, and the opportunity to pray together as a family. The keynote speaker for married and engaged couples is Fr. Larry Swink who will be giving a talk titled, God s Plan for Marriage Not Your Plan. The day will also include a special visit by Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton as part of our Visit of the Saints childrenʹs series that brings the saints to life in a fun, dramatic, and interactive way. The cost of attendance is $20 per family and $10 per couple. The visit of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton is Free but parents not attending Domestic Church Day must remain with their children. Save the Date - Mother of Africa Pilgrimage The archdiocesan Office of Cultural Diversity and Outreach invites you join a special Mother of Africa Pilgrimage on Sunday, September 16 from 2-4pm in the Upper Church at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (400 Michigan Ave., NE). Registration is open for these two fun opportunities to help support our seminarians and vocations to the priesthood. The Run for Vocations /Marine Corp 10K will be held on Sunday, October 28. The Ride for Vocations / Southern Maryland Century bicycle ride will be held on Monday, September 3. Visit promote for more information and to register for either of these events. It is not necessary to be part of a parish team to run or ride. Plan to register soon, as the races fill quickly. Please RFV@adw.org with any questions Summer Organ Recital Series at the Basilica The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites you to their 2018 Summer Organ Recital Series in the Great Upper Church. A recital will take place every Sunday in the month of July at 6pm. The series features Virgil Barkauskas of Melville, NY (July 15), Roland Voit of Hagen, Germany (July 22); and Jonathan William Moyer of Cleveland, OH (July 29). The recitals are open to the public and no tickets or reservations are required. The Basilica offers free parking and is conveniently located within walking distance of the Brookland-CUA Station of Metroʹs Red Line. For more information, please call the Basilica at Photo Retreat: ʺSeeking the Lightʺ On Saturday, July 28 from 10am 4pm, the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land (1400 Quincy St. NE, Washington, DC) will host a time of listening, reflecting, and practice in photography in its beautiful Monastery Church and gardens. It will be led by Dierdre McQuade, an experienced photographer who holds a Masterʹs in Theology from the University of Notre Dame, along with Fr. Greg Friedman from the Monastery. There will also be time for private prayer and the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). No special training in photography is necessary; all skill levels are welcome. Dear Parents: Do you have children who will be new students at University of Maryland in the fall? The University of Maryland is a large place, and it s easy to get lost in the chaos. We re there for them for Sunday Mass and a free Wednesday Night Mass & Dinner, which is every week during the semester, and much more!
