3 From the Pastor As I write this I am about to go on vacation. As you read this, I have already returned. Where did I go? I am very blessed to have some very good friends whom I have known for over thirty years who own a cottage on Conesus Lake in western New York State. Conesus Lake is the westernmost of the Finger Lakes. It is situated thirty miles south of Rochester. It is ideal for swimming, boating, fishing, and waterskiing, or just looking at the water and listening to it lap up against the shore. I am not much into fishing or waterskiing, but I do like to swim (with the help of fins) and I love being out on a boat. Fortunately, my friends own a small sailboat. I find it remarkably peaceful to be out on the water in a sailboat with only the sound of wind and water. It is truly exhilarating. Conesus Lake is near the town of Geneseo, the seat of Livingston County and home to a campus of the State University of New York (SUNY). The university and courthouse dominate the life and economy of the town, which is centered upon a typically American main street with shops, offices and eateries. The presence of the university students gives the town a youthful flavor. Nearby, in the town of Piffard is the Abbey of the Genesee, a Trappist monastery where the famous spiritual writer Henri Nouwen spent some time. The monastery chapel is made of wood and stone and beautifully colorful stained glass, all put together in the simple, austere style of the Cistercian order. I enjoy visiting the monastery frequently and spending some time in prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. The monastery also operates a bakery which sells fresh bread and other delicious baked goods daily. I spend most of my time by the water swimming, or reading, or just relaxing. It is a beautiful place that is very conducive to prayer and meditation. My friends are generous in including me in the life of their family as they take their vacation, so I have plenty of time to be with others, but also time to be by myself. For me, it is an ideal vacation. I am very blessed. As you know, this is Labor Day weekend, a very special time for our Greenbelt community which was founded with the needs of the working person in mind. As usual, St. Hugh s is represented at the city s Labor Day Festival by the Knights of Columbus, who are operating a sausage booth, and by our Ladies of Charity, CFM, and Youth Group, who are conducting the ever-popular bingo with the assistance of some generous volunteers from our parish and from Eleanor Roosevelt High School. We wish them all the best in their fundraising activities and thank them for representing the face of St. Hugh to our community. Enjoy the weekend as we mark the official end of summer. 4 FROM THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION From the School of Religion: Registration forms and sacramental preparation information for the new year beginning September 17, 2017 are now available on our parish website at If you are registering a child for the first time, please contact Mary Wade, the Director of the School of Religion, for an appointment at shreligioused4@gmail.com or For our returning families, please download and print the forms from the parish website. If you need a paper copy please contact Mary Wade. You may drop your completed forms and fees for tuition/books and sacramental fee (1st Holy Communion and Confirmation) in the rectory mail slot at any time or bring it by the school on Sundays (except August 20th) between 9am and 1pm. All registration forms and fees are due by September 10th. All women in the parish are invited to join the Walking With Purpose bible study beginning this fall. Two courses will be offered. For those who have participated in a prior course, we will be offering 2 9-week courses beginning with ʺBeholding His Gloryʺ and followed by ʺBeholding Your King.ʺ For those who have never participated in a Walking With Purpose study before, we will be offering ʺOpening Your Heart,ʺ a 22- week course. ʺOpening Your Heartʺ will begin Monday, September 25 at 9:30 a.m. in Grenoble Hall. ʺBeholding His Gloryʺ will begin Monday, October 23 at 6:30 in Grenoble Hall.
