Mid-Maryland Dental Mission of Mercy and Health Equity Festival will take place at the University of Maryland Xfinity Center, College Park, MD. In 2014 over 2,000 uninsured people experiencing dental problems obtained $2M worth of emergency treatments. If any St. Hugh parishioners are in need of this service, please call Mary Ann Tretler at , to get an advance ticket for this program or to get further information. 3 From the Pastor We pick up again with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are in the section of the creed section of the Catechism under the article I Believe in Jesus Christ the Only Son of God. Here are this week s three questions, with the catechism s answer and my commentary. Yours in Christ, Father Walter How did the messianic entrance into Jerusalem come about? At the established time Jesus chose to go up to Jerusalem to suffer his passion and death, and to rise from the dead. As the Messiah King who shows forth the coming of the Kingdom, he entered into his city mounted on a donkey. He was acclaimed by the little children whose shout of joyful praise is taken up in the Sanctus of the Eucharistic liturgy: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna [save us!] (Matthew 21:9). The liturgy of the Church opens Holy Week by celebrating this entry into Jerusalem. Commentary: The Scriptures preserve a number of Hebrew words which we continue to use in our worship. One such word is Alleluia. Alleluia is an expression of joy. It literally means Praise the LORD. Another such word is Hosanna. It means Save us, and expresses confidence in the saving power of the Anointed One, the Messiah, the Christ, who comes in the name of the LORD. Both these words are incorporated into the Church s liturgy. The Church sings Alleluia before the proclamation of the Gospel to express her joy as she prepares to listen to the words and deeds of Jesus, her Savior. The Church sings Hosanna as part of the Eucharistic Prayer as she gratefully recalls the Lord s passion and death through which he has delivered her from the death of sin. What is the importance of the Paschal Mystery of Jesus? The Paschal Mystery of Jesus, which comprises his passion, death, resurrection, and glorification, stands at the center of the Christian faith because God s saving plan was accomplished once for all by the redemptive death of his Son Jesus Christ. Commentary: The word Paschal comes from the word Passover. In the Old Covenant, Passover was the annual celebration of the events by which the Lord freed Israel from its captivity in Egypt. The highpoint of this act of liberation occurred at the Red Sea when God made a way for Israel to pass through the waters dry-shod while their Egyptian pursuers were drowned. In the New Covenant, the new Passover is the celebration of those events in Jesus life his passion, death, resurrection and glorification by which those who believe in him and received his spirit are freed from captivity to sin and death and become sharers in the immortal life of the Blessed Trinity. What were the accusations by which Jesus was condemned to death? Some of the leaders of Israel accused Jesus of acting against the law, the temple in Jerusalem, and in particular against faith in the one God because he proclaimed himself to be the Son of God. For this reason they handed him over to Pilate so that he might condemn him to death. Commentary: Jesus testified that he came not to abolish the Law of Moses but to fulfill it. He did this in his own Person, by his life and teaching, and ultimately by inaugurating a new Covenant through the shedding of his blood on the Cross. He challenged inadequate ways of understanding and applying the Law, and spoke of himself as God s temple. But most astounding of all, he spoke of God as a Trinity of Persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and himself as the Son of God made man. Some of the leaders of Israel saw this not as a fulfillment of the old Covenant but as its ruination. For this reason, they had Jesus condemned by the Sanhedrin, the supreme religious body of the Jewish people, and handed over to the Roman authorities for execution. But other Jewish leaders, like Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, and many other Jews as well, believed that Jesus was indeed the fulfillment of all God s promises to Israel. In time, these Jewish believers in Jesus would be joined by many Gentile believers who together would constitute what St. Paul called the Israel of God.

The series, ʺUnlocking the Mystery of the Bibleʺ is led by Jeff Cavins and Sarah Christmyer and it presents the ʺbigʺ picture of the Bible over the course of eight 30 minutes videos. You may experience the study by: Drop-in - come by the school library at 11am on any or all Sundays; June 25, July 2, 9, 16, 23,30 and August 6, 13, and watch the videos. If you like what you see, you may join a discussion group by following the directions below. Small group video and discussion - request the signup link by sending an to shreligioused4@gmail.com. When there are four people registered for the study, all registered group members will have free online access to the videos. These books will go to children ages 5 to 12 years old in Kindergarten to 5th grade for the Springhill Lake Elementary School Summer Reading Enrichment Program. Collection boxes will be at back of church through the end of June. Caritas Counseling Center Caritas Counseling Center, a ministry of Saint Luke Institute, offers confidential, professional, and compassionate therapy for individuals, couples, and groups. Archdiocesan Day of Reflection for Married Couples The archdiocesan Family Life Oﬃce is hosting a Day of Reflection for Married Couples on Sunday, July 23 from 8:30am3pm at St. Catherine Laboure in Wheaton, MD. The day will be led by Fr. Ángel Espinoza de Los Monteros from México. He will be talking about Communication in Marriage and growing deeper in your relationship with your spouse. Talks will be in Spanish but with simultaneous translation into English. To register please go to the following link: FEAR NOT How do people find hope in the face of suﬀering and death? That is the question addressed by today s scriptures. We hear of the suﬀering of Jeremiah and the psalmist. We hear of the death that reigned from Adam to Moses (Romans 5:14). We hear of the fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to preach and heal. Through all this tribulation one message rings out loud and clear Do not be afraid!
