3 From the Pastor On May 6 th at the 9:30am Mass, the 2 nd graders of our parish will receive their First Holy Communion. For the first time, they will share fully in the worship of the Church by communing with the Eucharistic presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This occasion gives us the opportunity to reflect upon the Mystery of the Eucharist by which the redeeming work of Jesus is carried forward through time. The Eucharist can be understood in four ways: as an act of praise and thanksgiving, as a memorial, as a sacrifice, and as a means of communion with God. The Eucharist is first of all an occasion for giving thanks to God for the daily gifts and graces we receive from His loving kindness. Part of the way we prepare ourselves for Mass is to call to mind our blessings and realize they do not come to us automatically but through God s generosity and love. The Eucharist is a memorial of Jesus death and resurrection, the means by which he has opened for us the way to heaven. By suffering and dying for us, he has paid the debt we owe because of our many sins, and by rising from the dead and bestowing his Spirit upon those who believe in him, he has made it possible for us to live holy and upright lives. The Eucharist is the sacrifice, the precious gift we offer up to God in union with Christ s sacrifice on the Cross to express our devotion and gratitude to him. It is the gift of our obedient service to him, lived out daily for his sake. The Eucharist is also the foremost means by which we are brought into communion with God, through our sharing in the Body and Blood of His Son. In our communion with God, we also find the source of our communion with one another, as brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus. The offering of the Eucharist is the foremost work of the Church, the culmination of all her other works, which, indeed, are made possible only because of the Eucharist. In it is contained her entire treasure; through it, she receives the life of God; without it, she would not exist. Please pray for our first communicants and rejoice with their families, as they share in the holy and awesome Mystery of Faith. Yours in Christ, Father Walter

College Park 40 Days for Life Spring 2012 A heartfelt THANK YOU to each church volunteer, pastor, priest and minister who has spoken from the pulpit, staffed a sign-up table, sacrificed personal time, prayed indoors or outdoors, and stood vigil outdoors in rain and shine, or heat and cold. 858 babies have been saved among the 301 vigil sites during this spring 2012 campaign, including 3 that we know of here in College Park, through women and men devoted to prayer and fasting. At the Metropolitan clinic, there were 2 additional saves - one the day before the start of 40 Days and one on Holy Saturday. Many have asked whether individuals will continue to pray at Metropolitan Family Planning even though the 40 Days for Life spring campaign is over. The answer is YES. Many of us are continuing to pray in front of Metropolitan Family Planning, 5915 Greenbelt Road, Berwyn Heights, during the days the clinic is open. These times are: Tue & Wed 11:30am 3:00pm and Fri & Sat 8:30am 12:30pm. You are welcome to join us and your prayers are always welcome. For any questions or comments contact Janice Oliver at or janoliv@comcast.net or 40daysforlifeMD@gmail.com. Once again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR PRAYERS DURING THE SPRING 40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN. 5 From the Director of Religious Education The Fourth Sunday of Easter Jesus the Good Shepherd Today s Gospel is from St. John 10:1-10. One of the oldest paintings of Christ, in the Roman catacombs, represents Christ as carrying the injured, straying sheep gently on His shoulders back to the sheepfold. This is an image of Christ which has always appealed to Christians. We have Christ as our shepherd He tells us so himself in today's gospel and we do not resent being called sheep in this context. There is something guileless about a sheep, and at the same time a lot of foolishness! But with Christ as our shepherd and the "good shepherd" who is sincerely interested in the true welfare of His flock we have reason to rejoice. The leaders of the Jews, the Pharisees and Sadducees, were false shepherds who tried to prevent the people from following Jesus, but they failed. They then killed the shepherd but in vain. He rose from the dead and His flock increased by the thousands and will keep increasing until time ends. We surely are fortunate to belong to the sheepfold of Christ His Church. We surely are blessed to have the Son of God as our Shepherd, who came among us in order to lead us to heaven. Do we fully appreciate our privileged position? Do we always live up to our heavenly vocation? We know His voice, we know what He asks of us, but do we always listen to that voice, do we always do what He asks of us? There are many among us today who foolishly think they need no shepherd. They think they know all the facts of life while they are in total ignorance of the most basic fact of all, namely, the very purpose of life. Not that the thought of it does not arise disturbingly before their minds time and time again. But they try to smother that thought and ease their consciences by immersing themselves deeper and deeper in the affairs and the passing pleasures of this temporary life. Alas for them, a day of reckoning lies ahead, a day that is much nearer than they would like to believe. What will be their fate when they meet Christ the Judge, whom they had refused to follow and acknowledge during their days on earth? This is a misfortune that could happen to any one of us, unless we think often of our purpose and our end in life. We have a few short years, but short though they be, we can earn for ourselves an eternity of happiness during this life. Let the straying sheep boast of their false freedom and of the passing joys they may get in this life this freedom and these joys are mixed with much sorrow, and will end very soon. We know that if we follow the shepherd of our souls, we are on the way to the true life, the perfect life, the unending life which will have no admixture of sorrow, regret or pain. Where Christ is, there perfect happiness is, and there with God's grace we hope and trust to be. Excerpted from The Sunday Readings by Fr. Kevin O'Sullivan, O.F.M. Today s Collect: Almighty ever-living God, lead us to a share in the joys of heaven, so that the humble flock may reach where the brave Shepherd has gone before. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Prayer Corner - The Regina Coeli One of the most joyous anthems of the Church is the Regina Coeli. There is a story about this anthem that gives it greater meaning. In a fearful pestilence our Lady's portrait reputedly painted by St. Luke was being carried in a procession which included Pope St. Gregory the Great. As they approached St. Peter's Basilica, the air became pure and free of pestilence. At the bridge which joins Rome to the Vatican, angels were heard singing above the picture: "O Queen of heaven, rejoice, Alleluia! for He whom thou didst deserve to bear, Alleluia! has risen as He said, Alleluia." When the heavenly music had ceased, St. Gregory added, "O pray to God for us, Alleluia," and raising his eyes to heaven, saw the destroying angel sheathing his sword where he stood atop the Mole of Hadrian. On the dome the Pope later erected an immense statue of the angel, his sword in scabbard. And to this day The Mole of Hadrian is called the Castle of Sant' Angelo. The following vernacular version of the Regina Coeli has become quite popular. The adaptation, made by Rev. Raymond Avery, O.S.B., first appeared in the booklet Daily Compline. O QUEEN OF HEAVEN O Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia, Because the Son you were chosen to bear, alleluia, Has risen as he foretold, alleluia! Pray for us, oh, pray to God, alleluia! Each Sunday in Eastertide we sing in Latin this as our Marian anthem at the conclusion of the Mass: Regina coeli, laetare, alleluia, Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia, Resurrexit sicut dixit, alleluia, Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia!
