The Gospel today centers the question of our relationship with God in the struggle of Nathaniel to believe that it is possible to experience rebirth in the Spirit. The answer of Jesus is that God s response to the messes of this world is the mystery of saving love in Jesus Christ and the outpouring of an empowering Spirit. Western church architecture often tops a church building with a spire, indicating humanity s reach to a transcendent God. The Eastern Church responds with onion-shaped domes, indicating the Spirit s being poured down upon humanity precisely at this locale, the gathering of the faithful for the Divine Liturgy. This familiar design encodes a great mystery: here, at the Lord s table, we experience the outpouring of the Spirit for the life of the world. Nathaniel came to Jesus by night, since he was still working out the meaning of his life. A life a uned to the inner life of the Trinity must always be given to the light of day. Rev. 3 From the Pastor On Saturday, June 21, at 10am at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, our parishioner, Chip Lucke, will be ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington. Chip has successfully completed ve years of theological and pastoral formation in preparation for this day. We rejoice that the Lord now calls him to life-long service as a priest of Jesus Christ. We are all invited to a end the ordination, and I encourage as many of us as possible to be present for this joyous event. There is ample free parking at the Basilica, and the Basilica is a short walk from the CUA/Brookland Metro station. The Rite of Ordination is a beautiful and moving expression of the Christian call to service. It is a powerful work of the Holy Spirit that brings grace not only to the ordained but also to those who join them in the celebration. The next day, June 22, Fr. Lucke will celebrate his First Mass at St. Hugh s at the 11 am Mass. Afterwards, there will be a reception in Grenoble Hall where we will have an opportunity to congratulate Fr. Lucke individually and receive his First Blessing, which carries with it a plenary indulgence. Our other seminarian, Jack Berard, is back home after completing his rst two years of theology in Rome. Jack will also be at Fr. Lucke s First Mass, so you ll have an opportunity to greet him as well. As you know, we pray for vocation to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life at every Mass. The Lord has richly answered our prayers. He has shown us the great good that can be accomplished through fervent and persevering prayer. God be praised! So please mark your calendars for the Ordination Mass next Saturday and the First Mass and reception next Sunday. Yours in Christ, Father Walter News from the School of Religion We would like to o er a heart-felt congratulations to our St. Joseph Regional School 2014 graduates. They are: Beatriz Jose, Nicholas Kern, Julian Pi s, and Nicholas Serra. The St. Hugh Sodality, represented by their newly elected Prefect, Suzanne Lomax, was happy to present the 2014 Religion Student Award to Beatriz Jose and Nicholas Serra. The awardees are selected by their Regional School Religion teacher based on the student s demonstrated excellence in knowledge of faith and service to parish, school, and local communities. It is the Sodality s way of supporting our youth as they learn to live their faith. We would also like to acknowledge our Religious Education students and Youth Group members who received academic and service awards through the Greenbelt ACE. They are: Elizabeth Gardner and Hannah Cetuk. Congratulations to all! We are so proud of you. You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. Ma 5: 13,14 Let your faith shine! 4 Dear St. Hugh Families and Parishioners, HAPPY FATHERS DAY! Parish Life It is summer! Summer o ce hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9:00-Noon. Mrs. Miller will be available to give tours; please call ahead to make an appointment: We ended the year strong and had a great end of the year awards ceremony! Our students have so many wonderful achievements. Thank you to the teachers for all of their hard work this entire year. I feel so blessed to spend time watching our students grown in their faith and academics! Please pray for our teachers as many of them will be taking classes themselves to continue to grow as the best teaching sta ever! We have two teachers retiring this year. We are so thankful and blessed to have had Mrs. Cheryl Dyer, who taught art for the last 22 years. Our school will truly be losing a gem! Mrs. Clemencia Amir, our Director of After-Care will also be retiring. Mrs. Amir started the program seventeen years ago and has given endless hours helping children with their homework and given parents peace of mind to know that the kids afternoon was structured, safe and fun! Please wish them well and pray for them as they enter the next chapter of their lives. We have St. Joseph s Regional Catholic School car magnets! If you would like to buy some, they are $5 each. Peace and all Good, Mrs. Anne-Marie Miller, OFS Principal, St. Joseph s Regional Catholic School Knights of Columbus Summer Camp Registration for the 14th summer of the Knights of Columbus Summer Camp has begun. We o er swim lessons, sports, arts and crafts, and free swim at our extensive facility in College Park. All of our counselors have received criminal background checks through the State of Maryland and the FBI. Adults working at the camp are Virtus trained through the Archdiocese. On Being a Faithful Citizen On June 24, Maryland residents will head to the polls for the primary election. To help you learn more about those who are seeking your vote, the Maryland Catholic Conference surveyed the state s candidates for governor, the U.S. Congress, and the General Assembly about their positions on issues of interest to Catholics. In addition, look to the Catholic Standard and El Pregonero for a full listing of all survey results. SUMMER CAMP AT ST. HUGH S SCHOOL Academic Enrichment Services, LLC will once again o er summer camp at St. Hugh s School, beginning on July 7 th and running through August 8th. Students entering Kindergarten through 5 th grade are invited to a end. Each one-week session will include recreation, academics, and team building activities. St. Hugh s Youth would like to thank all the parishioners who so generously donated to our fundraising e orts this past year. Because of your generosity, we have successfully raised enough money to bring 23 people to our annual youth conference in Steubenville, Ohio. Please pray for us this weekend while we are at our conference - we will be remembering you as well!
