3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. Here are this week s three questions. In what sense do we understand man and woman as created in the image of God? The human person is created in the image of God in the sense that he or she is capable of knowing and loving their Creator in freedom. Human beings are the only creatures on earth that God has willed for their own sake and has called to share, through knowledge and love, in his own divine life. All human beings, in as much as they are created in the image of God, have the dignity of a person. A person is not something but someone, capable of self-knowledge and of freely giving himself and entering into communion with God and with other persons. Commentary: To say that human beings are created in the image and likeness of God means, first of all, that God has made human beings persons. Persons are endowed with freedom, which gives them the capacity for self-determination through the use of the powers of rational reflection (which enables them to know intelligently) and self-donation (which enables them to give themselves to others in love). But this freedom which is given to human beings so that they can, on the natural level, perceive the goodness of things through knowledge and be united to these good things through love, and, on the supernatural level, come to know God through the gift of faith and love him through the gift of the Holy Spirit can be misused through a person s refusal on the natural level to acknowledge and love the goodness in creatures, especially in other persons, and on the supernatural level to refuse or hinder the gifts of faith and divine charity. When freedom is misused, persons begin to lose their capacity to recognize clearly and love wholeheartedly the good of creatures and the Good which is God himself. Through serious sin, human beings lose the freedom to give themselves in love to their Creator, in which consists the true peace and happiness of every person. As St. Paul teaches, they become slaves of sin. Only God s healing grace, which comes to us in Christ, can restore them to the freedom of God s children. For what purpose did God create man and woman? God has created everything for them; but he has created them to know, serve and love God, to offer all of creation in this world in thanksgiving back to him and to be raised up to life with him in heaven. Only in the mystery of the incarnate Word does the mystery of the human person come into true light. Man and woman are predestined to reproduce the image of the Son of God made Man, who is the perfect image of the invisible Father (Colossians 1:15). Commentary: God created man and woman for himself, who is the greatest good, infinitely surpassing the good of all creation. The awesome beauty of creation, which dazzles us with its vast richness, is but a faint reflection of the infinite Beauty of God; and the delight we experience in God s creation is meant to draw us to the One who is the source of every delight. God loves us; therefore, he demands that we love him; for only in loving God can we be like him, the highest good. As Christ is the image of the Father, so that whoever sees Christ sees the Father; we were created to be the image of Christ, so that whoever sees us sees Jesus. And as the Father lives in Christ and Christ in the Father, so Jesus lives in us and we in him. Why does the human race form a unity? All people form the unity of the human race by reason of the common origin which they have from God. God has made from one ancestor all the nations of men (Acts 17:26). All have but one Savior and are called to share in the eternal happiness of God. Commentary: Human beings are one because we share a common nature. In this respect, we are all equal. We all share a common origin in God. We all share a common destiny in God. All are made in the image and likeness of God. All are called to a common destiny in God, made possible through the one Savior, Jesus Christ, though not all will reach that destiny, eternal happiness in God, unless they exercise their freedom in accordance with God s grace; the grace that is made available to all through faith in Jesus Christ and baptism into his death and Resurrection. Over the course of 12 lessons, beginning on September 8, this study presents the participant an opportunity for growth in knowledge of Scripture and devotion to Our Lady. The St. Paul Center is making this resource available to all members of the Archdiocese of Washington, so please share this link with your friends and family: New lessons will be posted each week and will be available for two weeks after the post date. Keep an eye out for a new each week announcing that the new lesson is available. If you miss any of the lessons, there will be an opportunity to save on the full DVD set in your welcome . you. To mark the Year of Mercy, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be recited after the 5 p.m. Mass on the third Saturday of every month through the end of the Jubilee Year. 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time September 4th We need to let the Lord s words echo constantly in our hearts: Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, who am meek and humble of heart, and you will find refreshment for your souls (Mt 11:28-30). Jesus yoke is a yoke of love and thus a pledge of refreshment. We need to learn from Jesus, or better to learn Jesus, meek and humble; to enter into his meekness and his humility by contemplating his way of acting; And to remember that Jesus Church is kept whole not by consuming fire from heaven (Lk9:54), but by the secret warmth of the Spirit, who heals what is wounded, bends what is rigid, straightens what is crooked. (Pope Francis in Washington, D.C., during his Apostolic Visit) Continue your Walk With Francis and celebrate God s mercy with us this year at mercy.adw.org. Jubilee Year of Mercy September 4, 2016 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time If anyone comes to me without hating... father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his [or her] own life (Luke 14:26). Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confronting life-changing challenges. Faced with conflicting loyalties, disciples must reorder priorities, even relationships, to give Jesus and the gospel s demands first place. Today s second reading presents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Philemon, to welcome back Philemon s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Not only with unconditional forgiveness but with a counter-cultural, world-shattering change of status as an equal. No, even more a beloved brother in Christ. What in my life does the Jubilee Year of Mercy challenge me to hate meaning reform, redo, even utterly revamp so I can give everyone, no conditions, no exceptions, shockingly Christ-like love?
