TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Using beads for prayer and meditation is an ancient custom, found in many cultures and religions. The Christian rosary dates from the twelfth century, when it provided a way for ordinary Christians to learn about the lives of Jesus and Mary. Alan de la Roche, a fifteenth-century Dominican, preferred Psalter of Our Lady to rosary. This fitting name recalls an explanation of the devotion s origin. Unable to read the one hundred fifty psalms that formed the Church s official daily prayer, medieval Christians substituted first one hundred fifty Pater Nosters, and later one hundred fifty Ave Marias. By meditating on the various mysteries of the rosary while repeating these simple prayers, the faithful could immerse themselves in the whole mystery of the Incarnation and the Resurrection. The dedication of October to the Blessed Virgin Mary is an appropriate reminder of this venerable form of prayer. Faithful Christians everywhere continue to meditate on the mysteries of the rosary, praying in groups or alone. Why not take advantage of this season to renew your acquaintance with the rosary? 3 From the Pastor Today s bulletin contains the parish s financial statement for the fiscal year (FY) July 1, 2011 to June 30, It is presented in a standard format provided by the Archdiocese. Let me expand a little bit on the statement, to give you a better idea of where we stand financially as a parish. In comparison to FY , our weekly offertory collection in FY remained stable, down just slightly. The Improvement and Education fund collections, however, were both down around ten percent. The Christmas collection was up twenty percent, the Easter collection remained the same, and the holyday collections were up slightly. Overall, collections this year were down a little less than two percent from the previous year ($461,596 this year compared to $468,913 last year). There has been a good initial response to the capital fund which we initiated this past year. This has brought an additional $29,482 into our savings. We are reserving these monies for the big capital improvements that we will eventually have to undertake: replacing the roof on the church, repaving the parking lot, replacing the church organ, and improving the exterior of the religious education building (the school). Fundraising efforts in FY netted the parish $12,000, similar to the year before. The parish spent $48,892 in improvements to the interior of the church last year. This money did not come out of collections or other revenues but from monies donated specifically for these improvements and given by a small number of generous parishioners. Last spring the parish took out a ten-year loan for $62,000 from the Archdiocese at 2% interest to pay a quarter share of the cost of a required new roof at our regional school, St. Joseph Regional School in Beltsville. Last year we made payments of $3,423 on this loan. This money is folded into the 6% of parish offertory we pay to support the regional school. (If we were not affiliated with a regional school, we would still be required to pay 6% of parish offertory to support the Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese. Because we are affiliated, we, rather than the Archdiocese, direct where that money goes, namely, to our own regional school.) Even though slightly more money ($6,420) came into the parish last year than was spent, $60,000 of that income was reserved, meaning it could not be used to cover operating expenses. Operating expenses include the salaries and benefits for the clergy and parish staff, expenses for cleaning and maintaining the physical plant, utilities, and supplies for the parish office, the liturgy, and other parish programs. Last year the revenue from collections and other donations which is what we use to cover operating expenses fell short of actual operating expenses by approximately $53,600. This helps explain why our cash on hand dropped from $189,942 at the end of FY to $141,345 at the end of FY In order to address this concern, we have reduced the full time position of director of religious education to the part time position of director of the school of religion, saving the parish approximately $30,000 a year. Currently, the parish employs one full time business manager (Mrs. Lucy Fuentes), one full time plant manager (Mr. Hung Le), one full time director of music, who as part of her responsibilities also works part time in the front office (Mrs. Jennifer Goltz), one part time school of religion (CCD) director (Mrs. Kathi Kramer), and one part time principal organist (Dr. Gerald Muller). We also pay for the services of an additional part time organist and two professional singers. For FY we forecast an operating deficit of $20,700 at current levels of giving. This deficit would be covered if every one of the 607 registered families in the parish were to give an additional $35 to the parish during the course of the year, or if half the registered families were to give an additional $70 during the course of the year. The presenter is our own Fr. Rick Kramer, who will be speaking on Opening the Door of Faith: A Day of Reflection on the Year of Faith. Please join us for this day of spiritual enrichment and growth. The Marathon will begin after the 11am Mass with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Sodalists will lead the praying of 26 rosaries before ending the Marathon with Benediction around 9 pm. All parishioners are invited and encouraged to list their prayer intentions in the Sodality Prayer Book, located on the back table of the church. You are welcome to join us any time between Noon (after the 11am Mass) and 9 pm to pray with us in the presence of the Lord. SAVE THE DATE Wednesday, November 7 th! The Sodality of Our Lady will be celebrating 65 years of parish service with a Mass at 7pm followed by a light reception in Grenoble Hall. Bishop Martin D. Holley will be the celebrant. Pray during Respect Life month (October) and help support the 40 Days For Life mission. YEAR OF FAITH: OCTOBER 2012 What Is the Year of Faith? Meditation Since beginning his ministry as Peter s successor, Pope Benedict XVI has often spoken of the need to rediscover the journey of faith in order to rekindle the joy and renew the enthusiasm that encountering Christ brings to life (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 2). October 11 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of Vatican II and the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. From that day through the solemnity of Christ the King in November 2013, Pope Benedict invites us to celebrate a Year of Faith. This Year challenges us, disciples baptized into Christ and his Church, to move beyond routine to relationship; to re-image our Catholic faith not as an intellectual exercise, but as a personal encounter with Christ, an encounter that blossoms into a living friendship with Jesus and a loving relationship with our neighbor. Important as official teachings are and this year we should rediscover these, too the pope suggests that we begin this Year by looking at faith as a lifelong journey undertaken with a joy that inevitably attracts others. As examples of a personal faith whose authenticity and enthusiasm have an impact on others, Pope Benedict will canonize two saints with American significance on World Mission Sunday, October 21: Native American Kateri Tekakwitha ( ), whose short life was a journey of selfless love; and Mother Marianne Cope ( ), whose love for Christ led her from Germany to Hawaii, where she shared Father Damien s ministry to those afflicted with Hansen s disease.
