3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now treating the article of the Apostles Creed I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. Who are the faithful? The Christian faithful are those who, inasmuch as they have been incorporated in Christ through Baptism, have been constituted as the people of God; for this reason, since they have become sharers in Christ s priestly, prophetic and royal office in their own manner, they are called to exercise the mission which God has entrusted to the Church. There exists a true equality among them in their dignity as children of God. Commentary: It is Christ who chooses us to be members of his Church, as he says explicitly in Scripture: It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you (John 15:16). Incorporation into the Church comes through the sacrament of Baptism. For adults, admission to baptism requires a living faith in Christ and the teaching he has entrusted to the Church. For infants, admission to baptism requires the faith of the parents and godparents and a pledge on their part to raise their child according to the faith and practice of the Church. Members of the Church live and grow from the grace given them in their baptism. This grace is the indwelling presence of the Blessed Trinity and the supernatural virtues of faith, hope and charity through which the faithful grow in their life in God. As members of Christ s Body, the Church, they share in Christ s role as priest, prophet and king, so that they may become true sons and daughters of God and effective ambassadors for Christ in the world. All the members of the Church are equal not in the particular gifts or charisms which they possess, which are distributed by God according to his holy will; nor in the response which the faithful make to God s gifts, which depends on how well they exercise the virtues of faith, hope and love given them in their baptism; but in their dignity as human beings made in God s image whom he is pleased to redeem through the death and Resurrection of his Son. How are the people of God formed? Among the faithful by divine institution there exist sacred ministers who have received the sacrament of Holy Orders and who form the hierarchy of the Church. The other members of the Church are called the laity. In both the hierarchy and the laity there are certain of the faithful who are consecrated in a special manner to God by the profession of the evangelical counsels: chastity or celibacy, poverty, and obedience. Commentary: There are three main groupings among the members of the Church. There is the great crowd of believers called the laity. They are called to become holy as Christ is holy and to bring the light and truth of the gospel to every corner of the world. From among the laity, Christ chooses some to be sacred ministers through whom he leads, teaches and sanctifies his people. Also from among the laity, Christ chooses some to undertake the evangelical counsels in a life of special consecration to Christ by freely embracing celibacy (the renunciation of marriage for the sake of greater service to the Church), poverty (the renunciation of personal property as a radical sign of one s dependence of God and the superiority of spiritual goods above material goods), and obedience (voluntarily submitting one s will to a religious superior in order to sublimate personal ambitions to the greater good of the Church and one s religious community). Why did Christ institute an ecclesiastical hierarchy? Christ instituted an ecclesiastical hierarchy with the mission of feeding the people of God in his name and for this purpose gave it authority. The hierarchy is formed of sacred ministers: bishops, priests, and deacons. Thanks to the sacrament of Orders, bishops and priests act in the exercise of their ministry in the name and person of Christ the Head. Deacons minister to the people of God in the diakonia (service) of word, liturgy, and charity. Commentary: As Christ redeemed the world through the instrument of the human nature he took to himself at the Incarnation, so Christ brings the grace of redemption to his people through the instrument of his chosen ministers bishops, priests and deacons who, by virtue of the authority given them by Christ through the sacrament of Holy Orders, act not only in the name of Christ as his representatives, but in the very person of Christ who acts through them. In Christ, Father Walter
