Yet each suffered a similar fate in the same city, Rome, during the persecution of the Emperor Nero. Nero probably ordered the destruction of many of the residential neighborhoods in service to his building projects, and when the homeless began to look for someone to blame for the fires, Nero targeted the Christians. Soon, Peter was crucified, upside down, on the Vatican hill. Excavations (called scavi) under the Vatican basilica have proven the authenticity of his burial place near the place of his death. Paul, a Roman citizen, was later granted a swifter execution by sword, and is remembered at a vast basilica on the city s outskirts. Peter and Paul were just about polar opposites. Peter rough and ready, Paul poetic and polished. Peter carried a burden of regret for his denials, Paul had his own issues with which he struggled. Peter leapt over barriers to go to the Gentiles, Paul strove with and surrendered to the same call. 3 From the Pastor Today s Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul highlights the apostolic foundations of the universal Catholic Church and our communion with the Church of Rome. It was in Rome that both apostles preached and witnessed to Christ, and in Rome that they were both martyred for the faith. We honor these two princes of the apostles in the icons behind our altar. In the row of saints beneath the great icon of Christ Enthroned, St. Peter is depicted on the far left, holding the keys of the kingdom entrusted to him by Christ, and St. Paul is depicted on the far right, holding the book of the his letters to the Church and the sword that represents both the word of God that he preached, which cuts more sharply than a two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), and the instrument by which he was beheaded by the Roman authorities. In entering into the joy of the Solemnity, we rejoice to acknowledge the faith that they professed, which we profess with them, and the faith that they practiced to such a superlative degree throughout all their apostolic labors, which we also practice with the help of their prayers. They did not always agree on the best way to witness to the faith. There is the famous disagreement recorded by Paul in Galatians 2: Despite these differences in approach, they were united in their presentation of the gospel, so much so that it was important to Paul that he seek Peter s approval for his ministry (Galatians 2:7-10) and act in concert with Peter and the other apostles (see the account of the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15). This unity in faith but diversity in approach has marked the Church s work of evangelization to this day. That two men, of such different personalities and backgrounds, should have both ended up in Rome and both been martyred there, Peter by crucifixion and Paul by the sword, testifies to how each of us can make a contribution to the furtherance of the gospel, according to our individual temperament and abilities. None of us is Peter. None of us is Paul. Nonetheless, we are one with St. Peter and St. Paul in holding to the same faith. And upon the foundations they laid, we add our own witness to theirs. In this you rejoice, St. Peter tells us, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:6-7) For, as St. Paul tells us: My eager expectation and hope is that I shall not be put to shame in any way, but that with all boldness, now as always, Christ may be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. (Philippians 1:21-22) Yours in Christ, Father Walter

4 Knights of Columbus Summer Camp Registration for the 14th summer of the Knights of Columbus Summer Camp has begun. We offer swim lessons, sports, arts and crafts, and free swim at our extensive facility in College Park. All of our counselors have received criminal background checks through the State of Maryland and the FBI. Adults working at the camp are Virtus trained through the Archdiocese. HUGH S SCHOOL Academic Enrichment Services, LLC will once again offer summer camp at St. Hugh s School, beginning on July 7 th and running through August 8th. Students entering Kindergarten through 5 th grade are invited to attend. Each one-week session will include recreation, academics, and team building activities. Fortnight for Freedom The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Serve will take place from June 21 to July 4, The theme of this yearʹs Fortnight will focus on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Churchʹs teaching. Cardinal Wuerl will celebrate the Fortnight for Freedom Closing Mass on July 4 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
