3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now treating the article of the Apostles Creed I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. How do the lay faithful participate in the priestly office of Christ? They participate in it especially in the Eucharist by offering as a spiritual sacrifice acceptable to God through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:5) their own lives with all of their works, their prayers, their apostolic undertakings, their family life, their daily work and hardships borne with patience and even their consolations of spirit and body. In this way, even the laity, dedicated to Christ and consecrated by the Holy Spirit, offer to God the world itself. Commentary: Through the gift of the Spirit bestowed in baptism by which they are united to Christ as members of his Body, believers are given a share in Christ s threefold office of priest, prophet and king. Christ is the High Priest of the New Covenant, the Mediator between God and man. Nonetheless, he gives his followers a share in his priestly work of offering sacrifice and mediating grace to the world (1 Peter 2:5). It is only by virtue of the gift of the Spirit that believers are able to exercise their priestly ministry, which essentially consists of placing their entire lives at the disposal of the gospel. How does the laity participate in the prophetic office? They participate in it by welcoming evermore in faith the Word of Christ and proclaiming it to the world by the witness of their lives, their words, their evangelizing action, and by catechesis. This evangelizing action acquires a particular efficacy because it is accomplished in the ordinary circumstances of the world. Commentary: A prophet, in biblical terms, is one who speaks the Word of God to others. All Christians, in virtue of their baptism, are called to share God s Word the Person and teaching of Christ with others, primarily by conforming their lives to Christ through obedience to his commandments and leading a life of charity. Parents act as prophets when they teach Christ to their children. Christians in general act as prophets when, in whatever forum they find themselves, they always act out of Christian principles after the example and mind of Christ. How does the laity participate in the kingly office? The laity participate in the kingly function of Christ because they have received from him the power to overcome sin in themselves and in the world by self-denial and the holiness of their lives. They exercise various ministries at the service of the community and they imbue temporal activities and the institutions of society with moral values. Commentary: To live continuously in a state of grace, to be motivated in all things by divine charity, is what it means to share in Christ s kingly office. It means to rule oneself according the demands of charity and so bring order out of chaos, light out of darkness, freedom out of slavery to sinful passions: to be in full possession of oneself by letting oneself be fully possessed by Christ. Christian rule is always marked by service to others after the pattern of Christ: For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for the many (Mark 10:45). Yours in Christ, Father Walter FROM THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION This year the School of Religion will once again collaborate with the Ladies of Charity in sponsoring the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl. All parishioners are encouraged to participate. Rice Bowls will be distributed at all Masses the weekend of February 10th and 11th. This year we will share 3-5 minute videos in the gym during our Gathering on this Sunday February 4th. Please join us in the gym at 10:45am for: What is Lent? and Who is My Neighbor? We hope these videos will help you and your families encounter Lent through the eyes of those who directly benefit from the Rice Bowl. Upcoming Calendar of Classes Sunday, February 25th - 10:45am-12:30pm; 1st Communion Classes Begin Sunday, March 4th - 10:45am-12:30pm; confessions grades 4-6 Sunday, March 11th - 10:45am-12:30pm; confessions grades 2-3 Sunday, March 18th - 10:45am-12:30pm; confessions grades 7-8 Sunday, March 25th - NO CLASS - Palm Sunday Pope Francisʹ intentions for February: ʺThat those who have material, political or spiritual power may resist any lure of corruption.ʺ

HINDSIGHT Godʹs presence is not discerned at the time when it is upon us, but afterwards, when we look back. --John Henry Newman Women's Bible Study Coming...
