3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now treating the article of the Apostles Creed I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. What is the consecrated life? The consecrated life is a state of life recognized by the Church. It is a free response to a special call from Christ by which those consecrated give themselves completely to God and strive for the perfection of charity moved by the Holy Spirit. This consecration is characterized by the practice of the evangelical counsels. Commentary: To be consecrated means to be set apart for the service of God. By the grace of baptism, every Christian is set apart for the service of God. In this sense, all Christians are called to lead a consecrated life. But there are some among the faithful whom God calls to give witness to Christ and the gospel by embracing the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience. Their state of life is a radical form of consecrated life. These individuals both men and women renounce the ownership of personal property, renounce the good of marriage, and voluntarily submit themselves to a religious superior as a means of entering more freely into the service of God and the Church. Most of these consecrated persons live in community with other consecrated persons as members of a religious order: for instance, the Benedictines, Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites, and so forth. What can the consecrated life give to the mission of the Church? The consecrated life participates in the mission of the Church by means of a complete dedication to Christ and to one s brothers and sisters witnessing to the hope of the heavenly Kingdom. Commentary: Those who live in consecrated life are given the gifts and dispositions to embrace the evangelical counsels with joy and satisfaction. They are living proof of the power of God s grace to renew the human heart and form it according to the image of Christ s own heart. Their lives demonstrate the priority of spiritual goods over material goods, helping all Christians to embrace the Lord s command, Seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). What is the meaning of the communion of the saints? This expression indicates first of all the common sharing of all the members of the Church in holy things (sancta): the faith, the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, the charisms, and the other spiritual gifts. At the root of this communion is love which does not seek its own interests (1 Corinthians 13:5) but leads the faithful to hold everything in common (Acts 4:32), even to put one s own material goods at the service of the most poor. Commentary: The expression the communion of the saints which we recite as part of the Apostles Creed refers to all the holy things of Christ and the Spirit that Christians share in by God s gift (e.g., the virtues, the sacraments, the gifts and fruits of the Spirit), which give them communion with God and communion with one another in God. To believe in the communion of the saints is to believe that God, who alone is Holy, gives to believers a real share in his holiness and a genuine participation in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). Thus, we dwell in God and God dwells in us. Yours in Christ, Father Walter

Take a guided tour of the church, Tomb of Christ and catacombs, and pray the Stations of the Cross (indoors or in the gardens). Each student receives a certificate of participation with a blessing. Reservations are required for these pilgrimages. February New Socks Collection: The Ladies of Charity will again be sponsoring the new socks collection for patients at Spring Grove Hospital for the mentally ill. We need both men s and women s socks. Many patients come to this facility with just the clothes on their backs and socks are very much needed by the Volunteer Service at the hospital. There are collection boxes at the back of church to place your sock donations. Support for Springhill Lake Elementary School Summer Reading Program: The Ladies of Charity will again be collecting new and gently used childrenʹs books (Kindergarten through 5th grade reading levels) to be given to participants in the summer reading program to take home.
