3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now treating the article of the Apostles Creed I Believe in the Holy Spirit. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. What did the Holy Spirit accomplish in John the Baptist? The Spirit filled John the Baptist, who was the last prophet of the Old Testament. Under his inspiration John was sent to prepare for the Lord a people well disposed (Luke 1:17). He was to proclaim the coming of Christ, the Son of God, upon whom he saw the Spirit descend and remain, the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit (John 1:33). Commentary: The Holy Spirit has been active since the dawn of Creation, bringing into existence and filling with life all that the Father wills through his Word. In the last days of the Old Testament when God was preparing to enter into a New Covenant with his people, he filled John the Baptist with the Holy Spirit and sent him to the people to preach repentance for sins. Not only this, but John was privileged to recognize and point out the Christ when at last he came. Even as an unborn child, the Spirit filled John with supernatural joy at the approach of Christ; and as a mature prophet the Spirit moved him to testify that Jesus was the Christ, the unique bearer of the Spirit who had come as a sacrificial Lamb of God to inaugurate the New Covenant by the blood of his cross. What is the work of the Spirit in Mary? The Holy Spirit brought to fulfillment in Mary all the waiting and the preparation of the Old Testament for the coming of Christ. In a singular way he filled her with grace and made her virginity fruitful so that she could give birth to the Son of God made flesh. He made her the Mother of the whole Christ, that is, of Jesus the Head and of the Church his body. Mary was present with the twelve on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit inaugurated the last days with the manifestation of the Church. Commentary: By the working of the Holy Spirit Mary was made the perfect vessel of God s grace and the pure home of God s Word: the Word which she believed from her earliest days and to which she was to give flesh when the Spirit overshadowed her, making her the Mother of God. She was perfectly docile to the Spirit throughout her life, being the first and best of all her Son s disciples, and on the Day of Pentecost was graced by the Spirit to become the mother of the Church of all those anointed with the Spirit of God who have become in Christ children of the heavenly Father. What is the relationship between the Spirit and Christ Jesus in his earthly mission? Beginning with his Incarnation, the Son of God was consecrated in his humanity as the Messiah by means of the anointing of the Spirit. He revealed the Spirit in his teaching, fulfilled the promises made to the Fathers, and bestowed him upon the Church at its birth when he breathed on the apostles after the Resurrection. Commentary: When the Son of God became man by the will of the Father and working of the Spirit, his humanity was suffused with the Holy Spirit in such complete measure that the man Jesus was indeed the Christ, the unique mediator between God and men. There was no time when Jesus did not possess the Spirit in its fullness, for as Son of God he was always one with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Jesus came in the power of the Spirit to remove every hindrance to the Spirit from the hearts of men and to bestow the Spirit upon them by means of his death and Resurrection. FROM THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION ʺMay our parishes, animated by a missionary spirit, be places where faith is communicated and charity is seen.ʺ Pope Francisʹ intention for September Last Sunday, during the 9:30am Mass, our parish catechists received a special blessing from Fr.Tappe as they were commissioned to share their faith with our young parishioners; to evangelize. It is the vocation of all Christians, the very heart of the mission of the Church, to bring the love of Jesus Christ to others in word and deed. Living our call as missionary disciples of Christ can seem scary yet we can find comfort by taking a few simple steps that just might make a big difference in a personʹs life. Here are a few that were listed in an article found on usccb.org: Invite someone to an event at your parish or a small group where they can explore the Gospel. Offer to remember them in prayer daily for the next week and ask them if they have a particular prayer request. Consider that this person is loved by God and that the Holy Spirit may have put them in your life so that they can hear the Gospel. Another rich resource for ways to evangelize is the lives of the saints. We celebrate the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul this week on September 27th. Vincent was born into a poor French peasant family in He was educated by the Franciscans and did so well that he went on to study theology and was ordained a priest in He was captured while on a ship and enslaved until he escaped two years later. Vincent went back to helping the poor and this became his lifeʹs passion. Eventually, he began ministering to convicts and found that the work of evangelizing and helping convicts was too much for him alone so he formed the lay group known as the Ladies of Charity. This year they celebrate their 400th anniversary! He also founded the Congregation of Priests of the Mission known as the Vincentians, and co-founded the Daughters of Charity with St. Louise de Marillac. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Along with the reform of the Roman Canon and the redrafting of an ancient Roman prayer in Eucharistic Prayer II, two additional prayers were announced in Eucharistic Prayer III is a fresh composition. Like Eucharistic Prayer II, it has no preface of its own, but the presider chooses from a long menu of possible prefaces to become part of the prayer on a particular occasion. Also, like Eucharistic Prayer II it has a way to insert the name of the deceased in Masses for the dead such as funerals and memorials. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal views Eucharistic Prayer III as the best substitute for Eucharistic Prayer I on Sundays and feasts.in practice, this prayer is used very often at Sunday Mass, and its texts are familiar to all members of the assembly. In this prayer, notice that the priest extends his hands over the gifts and calls down the Holy Spirit to change them into the Body and Blood of Christ. This call of the Holy Spirit is called the epiclesis, and Eastern Christians consider it to be the consecration. Latin Christians have long considered the institution narrative to be the consecration. Partly in response to a deep sensitivity to the East, the reformers took care to structure all our new prayers with a strong epiclesis. The poetry and images of Eucharistic Prayer III are fruitful sources of meditation. Why not take a sentence or two into your private prayer? Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
