This Fridays home-made soup: Corn and Red Pepper Chowder (not spicy) TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven activities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life s journey in gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three pillars of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over death s darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end of life s journey: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of heaven. James Field, Copyright J. S. 3 From the Pastor At the conclusion of a consistory for causes for canonization held in Rome last Monday, Pope Benedict announced to the College of Cardinals his resignation from ministry as Bishop of Rome. Here is what he said: I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is. Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer. It is certainly unusual, though not unprecedented, that a pope should resign from office. The Holy Father has decided to step down from his office for the good of the Church since he no longer believes in conscience that he has the requisite strength of mind and body to fulfill his task as universal shepherd of the Church. This decision shows great courage and humility, as well as a genuine love for the Church. The contributions that Joseph Ratzinger has made to the Church in his lifetime as priest, theologian, bishop, Cardinal and Pope have been extraordinary. His theological writings, which fill a small library, show remarkable perceptiveness and clarity. Perhaps better than any other contemporary theologian, he has helped to illumine the meaning and implications of the Catholic faith for our times. God-willing, the Lord will give him time to make even more contributions to the Church as theologian, teacher, and priest. The Holy Father s unstinting work, both as Cardinal and Pope, in directing Church authorities to address instances of child sexual abuse should also be acknowledged. Accusations of delay and cover up which may apply to other individuals in the Church do not apply to him. The Holy Father officially resigns his office on February 28th at 8:00 p.m. Roman time. The dean of the College of Cardinals will then call the Cardinal electors to a conclave to elect a new pope. Our own archbishop, Cardinal Wuerl, will be among the electors. The conclave will take place sometime in March. There is a good possibility that the new pope will be elected by Easter. In our charity, let us keep Pope Benedict in our prayers throughout these last days of his papacy as we give thanks to God for the gift of his person and ministry. You may wish to join in a novena for the Holy Father that begins on February 19. Go to for the text of the novena. Let us also join with the whole Church in asking the Holy Spirit to guide the College of Cardinals in their selection of the next Successor of St. Peter. Yours in Christ, Father Walter The Season of Lent Preparing for the Paschal Celebration Solemn Annual Exposition March 6 and 7 Our annual 40 Hour devotions will be March 6 th and 7 th.
