3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now treating the article of the Apostles Creed I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. Why is the Church the people of God? The Church is the people of God because it pleased God to sanctify and save men not in isolation but by making them into one people gathered together by the unity of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Commentary: Human beings were created by God to live in communion with God and each other. This truth is expressed in Jesus two-fold command to love God and neighbor. Our human flourishing is made possible only through the fulfillment of this two-fold command. Though human beings are unique in their individuality, they share a common nature and a common destiny in God. It is a common sense observation that human beings are social creatures and that we can only become fully ourselves as individuals in the company of others who care for us and for whom we care. Thus, when Christ calls us to salvation, he places us in a community of other disciples, all us together constituting the people of God. What are the characteristics of the people of God? One becomes a member of this people through faith in Christ and Baptism. This people has for its origin God the Father; for its head Jesus Christ; for its hallmark the dignity and freedom of the sons of God; for its law the new commandment of love; for its mission to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world; and for its destiny the Kingdom of God, already begun on earth. Commentary: In the broadest sense, all people are the people of God because human beings have their origin in God. It is God who makes humans to be persons created in his image and likeness. But sin has so fractured the unity that should exist between human beings that is necessary that sin be overcome through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. We must be born again as redeemed creatures; God, as it were, must start over with us. He does this by stirring us to faith in Christ and incorporating us into the life of the Risen Lord through the waters of baptism. In baptism we receive the Holy Spirit who restores our human dignity, compromised by sin, and frees us to be creatures full of divine grace and favor. We become the People of God in the strict sense. The Spirit then sends us on mission to further the Kingdom of God, that all people who are the people of God in the broadest sense may become the renewed People of God, members of the Body of Christ, whom St. Paul calls the New Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45). In what way does the people of God share in the three functions of Christ as Priest, Prophet and King? The people of God participate in Christ s priestly office insofar as the baptized are consecrated by the Holy Spirit to offer spiritual sacrifices. They share in Christ s prophetic office when with a supernatural sense of faith they adhere unfailingly to that faith and deepen their understanding and witness to it. The people of God share in his kingly office by means of service, imitating Jesus Christ who as King of the universe made himself the servant of all, especially the poor and the suffering. Commentary: In baptism, God the Father makes us members of His Son through the working of the Holy Spirit. As members of the redeemed People of God, we not only share in Christ s life, we also share in his activity. As he is our High Priest who offered his life on the Cross as a sacrifice for sins, so we, who share in his priesthood as members of his Body, offer our lives to God in the freedom Christ won for us. As he is the Prophet who speaks the Word of God because he is the Word of God made flesh, so we, who share in his prophetic ministry as members of his Body, speak the Word we have received and in which we place all our faith, hope and love. As he is King of the universe who rules in truth and love, so we, who share in his kingly rule as members of his Body, exercise our sovereignty over the principalities and powers of this world through the holiness of our lives and by bringing Christ to those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death (Luke 1:79). Are you hungry for a way to serve in our parish? Have you been searching for a way to give back to others, to lighten someoneʹs load, to make another woman s life just a little bit easier? Walking With Purpose is a womenʹs Catholic Bible Study offered in our parish on Mondays. We are seeking to build our Child Care Coordinator Ministry to make our program more accessible to mothers at home with young children. We are praying for a few women to serve once a week in our school from 9am-11:30am. The Child Care Coordinator helps with setup and cleanup, Bible story time, snacks, and indoor play. This beautiful opportunity will allow the mothers of our parish the time to receive the love and care they so very much need, given to them through the written Word of Christ and the fellowship of other women in our parish. Your YES to this role will be the answer to a motherʹs prayer! All that is needed is an outpouring of love for children and the desire to build up God s Kingdom by serving the ones that heaven belongs to! Perfect for older moms who miss holding their babies, homeschooled teens and college-aged young adults looking for service hours, or the seasoned mother who can recall those ʺin the trenchesʺ years and would love to reach out and help! Virtus training and WWP Childcare Coordinator Workbook provided. For more information call Mary Wade at
