3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now treating the article of the Apostles Creed I Believe in the Holy Spirit. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. What happened at Pentecost? Fifty days after the Resurrection at Pentecost the glorified Jesus Christ poured out the Spirit in abundance and revealed him as a divine Person so that the Holy Trinity was fully manifest. The mission of Christ and of the Spirit became the mission of the Church which is sent to proclaim and spread the mystery of the communion of the Holy Trinity. Commentary: Pentecost was the birthday of the Church, the renewed People of God who are not only guided by the Spirit from without, but are given the Holy Spirit as an abiding Presence within their hearts. Christ and the Father came to dwell in the hearts of the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. This outpouring of the Holy Spirit constituted their baptism as well as their commission to undertake the work of evangelization. Before his death, Jesus had spoken of the Holy Spirit as another Advocate, that is, as a distinct Person within the Godhead. The Spirit would be the One to bring Christ and the grace of his redemption to Jesus followers. The Spirit would make their lives fruitful in the works of charity, for the Spirit is God s Love, shared between the Father and the Son, that is poured into the hearts of believers. What does the Spirit do in the Church? The Spirit builds, animates and sanctifies the Church. As the Spirit of Love, he restores to the baptized the divine likeness that was lost through sin and causes them to live in Christ the very life of the Holy Trinity. He sends them forth to bear witness to the Truth of Christ and he organizes them in their respective functions so that all might bear the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Commentary: Perhaps a better question would be, What does the Spirit not do in the Church? For every good work of the Church is inspired, guided, and carried out through the activity of the Spirit. The Spirit, as an indwelling and creative Presence in the heart of believers, inserts believers into the inner life of God himself. We are united to Christ by the Spirit and oriented with Christ to the Father. Through, with and in Christ, we receive the Father s love, which is his life-giving Spirit, and by that Spirit imbibe all the graces that Christ has won for us by his death and Resurrection, thus becoming fruitful in the works of love. How do Christ and his Spirit act in the hearts of the faithful? Christ communicates his Spirit and the grace of God through sacraments to all the members of the Church, who thus bear the fruits of the new life of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also the Master of prayer. Commentary: Christ, God s eternal Word, and the Spirit work always together. Indeed, the word Christ means the One anointed by the Spirit. All that Christ accomplished for us by his life, death and Resurrection was done in and with the Holy Spirit. All that Christ continues to accomplish for us in the Church is done in and with the Holy Spirit. Christ, with the Spirit, rouses us to faith through the preaching of the gospel. Faith opens us to the gift of the Spirit that is received in baptism and in all the other Sacraments of the Church. The Spirit incorporates us into Christ and, thus, into the life the Holy Trinity. Indeed, the life of grace is participation in the life of God himself. God becomes the inner principle of my life when, through baptism, Christ bestows upon me the Spirit that proceeds from the Father and from him. The Spirit animates me in the life of faith; and, as St. Paul teaches (Romans 8:26), prays in me, both teaching me how to pray and assisting me in my prayer. Yours in Christ, Father Walter Movie Night The 13th Day Friday October 6 Grenoble Hall 7pm There will be popcorn and soda.
