It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, today is the Dormition of the Theotokos, or the Falling Asleep of the God-bearer. There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as my friend, and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

3 From the Pastor This week I wish to continue with a consideration of Pope Francis encyclical for the Year of Faith, Lumen Fidei. In chapter two of the encyclical, the Holy Father says, Each of us comes to the light [of faith] because of love. This extraordinary insight reveals some important truths. Man s search for love is a powerful motive for his coming to faith. Christian faith witnesses to the perfect communication of God s love to man in the Person of Jesus Christ, and the perfect expression of human love in the complete self-gift of Jesus for our sake. Faith assures us that love is the motive behind creation and that love is the motive behind the work of redemption, which is God s response to the bitter reality of human sinfulness. The light of faith is itself a gift of love coming from God, to lead us to love. The Holy Father tells us that our human loves contain a ray of the love that shines forth from Jesus Christ, the Son of God made flesh. We discover Jesus Christ through the preaching of the gospel. This preaching witnesses to the truth about Jesus Christ as the savior of the world, the one who alone fully reveals the Father. When we accept this truth with the assent of faith, in other words, when we believe in the gospel that has been preached to us, the Person of Jesus Christ becomes real to us. We see him; we hear him; we touch him in the depths of our heart, and through our participation in the sacraments of the Church, Jesus ministers to us in the Spirit. He forgives us our sins; he heals our wounds; he strengthens our halting spirits; he reliefs us of our fears; he shows us the path to everlasting life; he makes his home within us; and he brings us the love of his Father. Truth finds its origin and summit in the acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as savior and Son of God. This truth, the Holy Father tells us, leads to humility, since believers know that, rather than ourselves possessing truth, it is truth which embraces and possesses us. The truth revealed by faith is an invitation to enter into friendship with the living God. It is the truth which makes sense of life and which gives life because it puts us in touch with the origin of all life, the One who is life itself, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christian faith is the perfection of all who strive to know God. There is not human experience, no journey of man to God, which cannot be taken up, illumined and purified by this light, the Holy Father says. Thus, Christians acknowledge the elements of truth found in other religions while at the same time professing that Christ is the bright sun of all truth. Christians also respect those who, though not believers, are sincerely open to love, for, as the Holy Father tells us, they are on the path leading to faith. Affirming Catholic teaching, the Pope continues, Anyone who sets off on the path of doing good to others is already drawing near to God, is already sustained by his help, for it is characteristic of the divine light to brighten our eyes whenever we walk towards the fullness of love. 4 Religious Education Registration Religious Education (CCD) for children Pre-K through 8 th Grade will begin Sunday, September 15. Registration forms for new students and returning students are on the table in the back of the church. Mrs. Wade, the Director of the School of Religion, will be available next weekend, August 17-18, after each Mass to answer questions and assist you in the registration process. It is expected that all school-aged children in our parish attend the weekly CCD School of Religion classes as part of their faith formation. St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe January 8, 1894 August 14, 1941, Feast Day August 14 I don t know what s going to become of you! How many parents have said that? Maximilian Mary Kolbe s reaction was, I prayed very hard to Our Lady to tell me what would happen to me. She appeared, holding in her hands two crowns, one white, one red. She asked if I would like to have them one was for purity, the other for martyrdom. I said, I choose both. He entered the minor seminary of the Conventual Franciscans in Lvív (then Poland, now Ukraine), near his birthplace. He founded the Militia of the Immaculata, whose aim was to fight evil with the witness of the good life, prayer, work and suffering. He then founded Knight of the Immaculata, a religious magazine to preach the Good News to all nations. In 1939, Kolbe and his friars were arrested, then released in less than three months, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In 1941 he was arrested again. The end came quickly, in Auschwitz three months later. A prisoner had escaped. The commandant announced that 10 men would die. As they were being marched away to the starvation bunkers, Number dared to step from the line. I would like to take that man s place. He has a wife and children. The commandant ordered Father Kolbe to go with the nine to the block of death where they were slowly starve. Father Kolbe died on the eve of the Assumption. He was beatified in 1971 and canonized in Excerpted from AmericanCatholic.org
