First Saturday Devotions will be held this Saturday after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What is the Church if not the assembly of all the saints? wrote the fifth-century bishop Niceta. Each Sunday, in the Profession of Faith, we express our belief in the communion of saints, the one body with Christ as its head made up of those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified and the blessed in heaven. We are not alone! The preface for All Saints begins, For today by your gift we celebrate the festival of your city, the heavenly Jerusalem, our mother. What astounding words! All Saints Day (like every solemnity) is nothing less than the festival of the fullness of the paschal mystery, our dying and rising in Christ. Of course, now in autumn the mystery comes clothed in glorious autumnal garb, and so we celebrate our Easter faith with signs of the harvest, signs of nature s dying, signs of the homecoming that happens naturally when the weather gets cold and families find themselves together more often. While the dying can point to our own mortality, the homecoming reminds us of the mystery of our own resurrection with Christ. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

3 From the Pastor On Sunday, October 21, 2012, Pope Benedict canonized Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha as the first Native American saint. Here are the words the Holy Father spoke on the occasion: Kateri Tekakwitha was born in today s New York state in 1656 to a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother who gave to her a sense of the living God. She was baptized at twenty years of age and, to escape persecution, she took refuge in Saint Francis Xavier Mission near Montreal. There she worked, faithful to the traditions of her people, although renouncing their religious convictions until her death at the age of twenty-four. Leading a simple life, Kateri remained faithful to her love for Jesus, to prayer and to daily Mass. Her greatest wish was to know and to do what pleased God. She lived a life radiant with faith and purity. Kateri impresses us by the action of grace in her life in spite of the absence of external help and by the courage of her vocation, so unusual in her culture. In her, faith and culture enrich each other! May her example help us to live where we are, loving Jesus without denying who we are. ******** Congratulations to parishioner John Winfrey who has been chosen Master of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus for the Archdiocese of Washington. His term of office is for two years. The Master oversees all the activities of the Fourth Degree, which is the highest degree a Knight can attain. The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship among the members of the Fourth Degree. John will work closely with the Color Corps in providing color guards and honor guards for special events, and with the Veterans Administration with special programs like the Wounded Warrior. John will be inducted as Master at St. Hugh s after this Sunday s 11:00 a.m. Mass. ******** The Holy Father has attached a special plenary indulgence for the remission of all temporal punishment from sin, applicable to oneself or the souls of the faithful departed, on the following conditions: 1) that one repent of and confess one s sins in the Sacrament of Penance; 2) receive Holy Communion; 3) pray for the Holy Father and his intentions; 4) undertake one of the following good works: a) take part in three lessons on the acts of the Second Vatican Council or on the Catechism of the Catholic Church or three occasions of preaching during a church mission; b) visit a papal basilica (e.g., the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception or cathedral (e.g., the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle) and there participate in a religious service or spend some time in prayer and reflection, ending with an Our Father, the Creed (Nicene or Apostles ), and an invocation to the Blessed Mother (a Hail Mary or any other Marian prayer); c) attending specially designated archdiocesan events; d) visiting the church and baptistery of one s baptism and there renewing one s baptismal promises. The granting of indulgences is an exercise of the power of binding and loosing given by Christ to his Church. It is a way for the faithful to make amends for the sins already confessed and forgiven that they or the faithful departed have committed and for which they are obliged to make satisfaction. When they undertake in charity the designated work of the indulgence, the Church opens to them the merits of Christ and his saints for the satisfaction of the temporal punishment owing to their own sins or to the sins of a member of the faithful departed on whose behalf they are performing the indulgenced work. ******** I encourage you to take advantage of our new initiative, Come As You Can Sunday, which is being held every Sunday morning throughout the Year of Faith from 9:15 to 10:30 in the school library. (One would enter the school through the side door nearest the church). The session provides a guided reflection based on the Magnificat Year of Faith Companion Book. This ministry is being provided to give parishioners an opportunity to grow together in the knowledge and love of our Catholic faith, that we might better serve the Lord and build up his kingdom. As the name of the ministry implies, come as you are able. It will be time well spent. Yours in Christ, Father Walter Solemnity of All Saints Thursday November 1 is the Solemnity of All Saints and a holy day of obligation. Our Mass schedule is 7:15am, Noon, and 7pm. It is a day given to us by the Church to pray in a special way for those who have died, that their souls may be at peace and that their rest may be in Paradise. As a community of faith we will gather at St. Hugh Church on November 2 nd at 7 pm for Mass. We will remember those of our parish who have died within the past year. If you would like the name of a recently deceased loved one to be included in that evening's prayers, please contact the Rectory.
