3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now treating the article of the Apostles Creed I Believe in the Resurrection of the Body and I Believe in Life Everlasting. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. What does it mean to die in Christ Jesus? Dying in Christ means to die in the state of God s grace without any mortal sin. A believer in Christ, following his example, is thus able to transform his own death into an act of obedience and love for the Father. This saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him (2 Timothy 2:11). Commentary: To die in Christ means to face life and death as Christ did: to live one s earthly life for the glory of God alone and to die as God s obedient and loving servant in the manner of death he has chosen for me. We can do this only with the help of God s grace which we receive in faith and which alone enables us to die with Christ so as to live with him forever in heaven. What is life everlasting? Eternal life is that life which begins immediately after death. It will have no end. It will be preceded for each person by a particular judgment at the hands of Christ who is the judge of the living and the dead. This particular judgment will be confirmed in the final judgment. Commentary: Eternal life, properly speaking, is the divine life, God s own life: the eternal exchange of love among the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity which has no beginning or end. Those who die in Christ whose lives in this world were ruled by divine charity will share in the fullness of God s life forever. Their persons will participate fully in the eternal love of Father, Son and Holy Spirit that is everlasting life. What is the particular judgment? It is the judgment of immediate retribution which each one after death will receive from God in his immortal soul in accord with his faith and his works. This retribution consists in entrance into the happiness of heaven, immediately or after an appropriate purification, or entry into the eternal damnation of hell. Commentary: At the moment of death, the soul is immediately judged by God. This is called the particular judgment, where the person receives just deserts for the way they lived their life on earth. As we mentioned last week, those who are judged righteous and who have been purged of every sin before their death enter immediately into heaven. Those who are judged righteous but who die with some remaining attachment to sin enter upon a period of cleansing called purgatory in preparation for their ultimate admittance into heaven. Those who are judged wicked immediately enter hell where, as Jesus says, their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched (Mark 9:48). Those who die having rejected God s grace exclude themselves from eternal life. To be sure, their souls will continue to exist forever as will their resurrected bodies, but they will remain in a state of endless torture caused, not by God, but by their final and absolute impenitence. Students enrolled in grades 2-4 had a yeast of a time as they watched yeast engage in cellular respiration and fermentation, thereby producing carbon dioxide which inflated a balloon. Come Pray with Us What do we mean by Living Stations? The fourteen stations of the cross will be enacted by our confirmation candidates in the Sanctuary of our church. Each station will be introduced by a candidate, who will read a reflection that will give the station meaning for living the faith in today s world. We will then pray the prayer in the program and sing a short song before moving to enact the next station. We hope that through our living stations you will come to know the Christ more intimately.
