3 From the Pastor We continue our study of the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now in the section on the Seven Sacraments of the Church. This week we continue with our consideration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. Why is the Holy Eucharist the paschal banquet? The Holy Eucharist is the paschal banquet in as much as Christ sacramentally makes present his Passover and gives us his Body and Blood, offered as food and drink, uniting us to himself and to one another in his sacrifice. Commentary: From earliest times God s covenant relationship with his people has been expressed by means of sacrifices (gifts given by God which are rendered back to him as an act of thanksgiving) that take the form of a meal. Thus, the priest Melchizedek and Abraham shared a sacrificial meal of bread and wine to honor God s covenant faithfulness in delivering Abraham from his enemies (Genesis 14:18-19). The children of Israel slaughtered a lamb and ate its flesh in thanksgiving for their deliverance from the clutches of Pharaoh (Exodus 12:21, 26-27). And Moses, Aaron and the seventy elders of Israel entered into the Covenant given by God at Sinai by sharing in a sacrificial meal (Exodus 24:9-11). At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine. Transforming them into his sacrificial Body and Blood, he shared them with his disciples in a sacred meal that unites them to him in the one sacrifice of the New Covenant. What is the meaning of the altar? The altar is the symbol of Christ himself who is present both as sacrificial victim (the altar of the sacrifice) and as food from heaven which is given to us (the table of the Lord). Commentary: An altar is a raises structure where sacrifice takes place. In Catholic worship the altar is the place where the sacrifice of the Cross is made present at every Mass so that the faithful may share in the sacrifice and reap its benefits through their sacramental eating and drinking of Christ s Body and Blood. When does the Church oblige her members to participate at Holy Mass? The Church obliges the faithful to participate at Holy Mass every Sunday and on holy days of obligation. She recommends participation at Holy Mass on other days as well. Commentary: In the Old Covenant, God commanded that the children of Israel keep holy the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week (Exodus 20:8ff.). In the New Covenant, the Church is commanded to keep holy the Lord s Day, the first day of the week, the day on which Christ rose from the dead. But how are we to keep it holy? The Church, possessing the authority given it by Christ to interpret God s word (Matthew 16: 19), commands the faithful to keep holy the Lord s Day by participating at Holy Mass. This is no mere human precept. It carries the weight of divine law. Jesus said in reference to the Mass, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you (John 6:53). But, how often are we to participate in Eucharist in order to have this life within us? The Church answers, again with divine authority: we are to attend every Sunday and holyday of obligation unless seriously impeded (by illness, for example). The Apostle Paul also exhorts us, We should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some, but encourage one another, and this all the more as you see the day (of judgment) drawing near (Hebrews 10:24-25). The webinar sponsored by the Department of Special Needs Ministries of the Archdiocese of Washington provided some very helpful resources and tips for celebrating Advent, Christmas, and the New Year with children and adults who are living with disabilities. Of particular interest were the tips shared by two parents of children with disabilities. One of those parents is our parish Parent Support Group facilitator, Donna Njoku. Some of the tips they shared were: know your child and prepare him/her for any changes in their schedule; have an entrance strategy - review what to expect in terms of sounds, smells, visual details, and anything that may be out of the ordinary that may cause anxiety; have an exit strategy -know that it is ok to leave Mass early if needed; celebrate Christmas as you would a birthday, with cake and presents; remember that the more your child participates, the more they will be accepted by the community and the more they will feel welcome; and, finally, be relaxed - have fun and invent your own "perfect." The next lunch time webinar is planned for January 31, 2019 and will discuss Maryland legislation and its impact for persons living with disabilities. 5 Ladies of Charity Activities: 1. The next monthly meeting of the St. Hugh LOC will be on Tuesday, February in Grenoble Hall. Anyone interested in learning more about the Ladies of Charity is welcome to attend the meeting. Any questions, please call Mary Ann Tretler (301) Parish-wide collection of new socks for men and women will be collected in the month of February/March for patients at Spring Grove Hospital. These socks go in Easter baskets prepared by the Volunteer Dept. at the hospital. 3. Parish-wide Catholic Charities Lenten Food Collection will be taken the weekend of March 30th/31st. Ladies will prepare the collection bags the week before. 4. Catholic Relief Services Lenten Rice Bowl Project coordinated by the Ladies of Charity and School of Religion will begin in March. 5. April is Ladies of Charity Month and planning will begin for Mass and dinner. 6. Save the Date: Sunday, June 2nd PG LOC Quarterly Meeting/Luncheon. Benediction and installation of new members at 2pm in the church. Luncheon and program to follow in Grenoble Hall. Donna Peterson will present historical program on Religious figures in the Civil War. There will also be items for sale from the "Christ in the Garbage" Project. This project helps mothers and families move out of trash dumps in third world countries by selling handmade bags they were taught to sew. This project is being done in coordination with St. Benedict Moor LOC. St. Hugh Food Pantry Current Food Item Needs: Boxed Cereal, Chef Boyardee canned pasta, canned tuna and boxed crackers. Also, if you have COOP plastic grocery bags at home, please bring them to church and place in the brown basket at the back of church. We use these strong bags to pack the pantry foods given out each week. Thanks for all your support.
