3 From the Pastor As we continue with the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium, we are now in the section on the Seven Sacraments of the Church. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. How is Christian initiation brought about? Christian initiation is accomplished by means of the sacraments which establish the foundations of the Christian life. The faithful born anew by Baptism are strengthened by Confirmation and are then nourished by the Eucharist. Commentary: A person is initiated into the life of Christ through the gift of the Holy Spirit, who is first bestowed in the Sacrament of Baptism. The Holy Spirit is again bestowed in the Sacrament of Confirmation to strengthen the baptized person in the life of Christ, especially that they may effectively carry forward the ministry of evangelization entrusted by Christ to the Church. The Holy Spirit transforms the gifts of bread and wine, brought to the altar by the Church as the outward sign of her inward commitment to Christ, into the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood, the Eucharist, that the life of Christ may grow in the hearts of the baptized to make them saints. What names are given to the first sacrament of initiation? This sacrament is primarily called Baptism because of the central rite with which it is celebrated. To baptize means to immerse in water. The one who is baptized is immersed into the death of Christ and rises with him as a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17). This sacrament is also called the bath of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5); and it is called enlightenment because the baptized becomes a son of light (Ephesians 5:8). Commentary: The word baptism comes from the Greek word meaning immersion in water. The Sacrament of Baptism, which is sometimes performed with an immersion of the baptized into water, but which is more often performed through the pouring of water over the baptized, is the outward sign of a person s real immersion into the death and Resurrection of Christ, whereby the sinful heritage of the Old Adam is put to death and replaced by the glorified life of the New Adam, Christ. Baptism brings about a new reality for the person baptized. St. Paul in the Letter to Titus speaks of baptism as the bath of regeneration, that is, of being born again or created anew, whereby the person does indeed become a new, transformed creature in Christ. They are suffused with the light of the Holy Spirit that shines from the Person of Christ, and are thereby conformed to Christ, becoming a member of his Body, the Church. How is Baptism prefigured in the Old Covenant? In the Old Covenant Baptism was pre-figured in various ways: water, seen as source of life and of death; in the Ark of Noah, which saved by means of water; in the passing through the Red Sea, which liberated Israel from Egyptian slavery; in the crossing of the Jordan River, that brought Israel into the promised land which is the image of eternal life. Commentary: The whole of the Old Covenant, from the creation and fall of man until the Incarnation of Christ in the womb of the Virgin, was a time of preparation for the coming of the promised Messiah. God s marvelous deeds that shape the history of his people in the Old Testament were but the first steps he took to help prepare them to receive the Messiah when at last he came. The miraculous water rescues that God performed on behalf of his people in the Old Testament at the time of Noah and the Great Flood, at the time of Moses and the passage of Israel out of Egypt through the waters of the Red Sea, at the time of Joshua and the crossing of Israel through the waters of the Jordan River into the Promised Land foreshadowed the even more miraculous water rescue he performs in the Sacrament of Baptism. For, in Baptism the people of God are definitively rescued from man s greatest enemies, sin and death, through their immersion into the death and Resurrection of Christ.
