One of the most important days of the year for many, they join All Saints and All Souls together, visiting the graves of babies and children on All Saints, since they are santitos (little saints) or angelitos (little angels). Flowers, their favorite toys, favorite music, and so on, are taken to them. The following day, people spend time some of them all day at the cemetery with their loved ones who have died. From the ancient customs of the Indians the families pray, talk with them, and take them their favorite food. It is a most solemn but joyful day. It is a day to celebrate Christ s victory over death: Death, where is your sting? There is a mocking of death as people make skeletons, candy that represents death, and Pan de los Muertos (bread of the dead) and consume them in a kind of role reversal. One of the customs is to build an altarcito (little altar) where one places mementos and pictures of those who have died. There are also favorite foods, candles, statues or pictures of favorite saints, books, and Bibles. Some parishes have begun to build an altarcito where all parishioners can join in honoring the deceased. A remembrance book can be placed to write names in. The altarcito is traditionally left up for the month of November. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

3 From the Pastor November 4 th is Election Day. In Maryland, we are voting for governor, comptroller, attorney general, congressional representative, state senator, and state delegate. In Prince George s County we are voting for county executive, county councilman or woman, several judgeships, members of the board of education, sheriff, state s attorney and register of wills. Plus we are voting on a number of questions for our determination. I encourage all eligible voters to participate in the election process. Our Catholic social teaching points to the moral importance of so doing. You can go to the website for the Maryland Catholic Conference, mdcathcon.org, to inform yourself on the issues at stake in the election. You can also find candidates responses to a survey sent to them by the conference. The Maryland Catholic Conference, by the way, is the mechanism by which the bishops of Maryland the Archbishop of Washington, the Archbishop of Baltimore, and the Bishop of Wilmington (whose diocese includes the Eastern Shore of Maryland) help to shed the light of the gospel on the political issues of our day. Our voting as in every other aspect of our lives as disciples of Jesus should be informed by our Catholic beliefs and values. We should vote candidates who will best promote the good of all, especially those who are most at risk, most at the margins, most in need or our protection and care, in imitation of the Lord Jesus. There are no perfect candidates for office. We must do our best to elect to weigh the pros and cons of each candidate and make the best decision we can in accord with our conscience. See you at the polls! ******* Our church organ is now officially blessed and dedicated to the greater glory of God. We had a wonderful turn out last Saturday evening for the blessing and organ recital that followed. Dr. Hampson Sisler from New York performed a repertoire of sacred music that helped to demonstrate the power and range of our new organ. Dr. Sisler also accompanied works performed by tenor, Dr. Christopher Linstrom, and by our St. Hugh of Grenoble adult choir under the direction of Mrs. Jennifer Goltz. A lovely dessert reception followed downstairs in Grenoble Hall. Thanks go to Mrs. Goltz for organizing the music program, and to Silke Pope and Susan Mathis for putting together the dessert reception. There was a good number of people from outside the parish who attended and were impressed by the beauty of our church and the quality of our organ and also, perhaps, by the reverence with which we blessed our organ and dedicated it to the service of God. ****** If you have not had the opportunity to add the names of your beloved dead to those for whom we will be especially praying throughout the month of November, please pick up an All Souls envelope at one of the church entrances. Write the names of your deceased on your envelope and include your offering to the church inside. You can place your All Souls envelope either in the collection basket or through the mail slot at the rectory. The envelopes will remain on the altar throughout the month of November. ****** Throughout the month of November, you will find a catechesis on end of life issues included in each week s bulletin. I encourage you to become familiar with Catholic teaching on these important issues so that we can handle them in a way that is pleasing to the Lord and in accordance with his will. ****** For all our beloved dead, friends, family and benefactors, on this All Souls Day: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Yours in Christ, Father Walter

4 Parish Life Dear St. Hugh Families, Happy Feasts of All Saints and All Souls. We remember and pray for all of our family members who have gone before us. To date, Caritas Iraq and CRS have provided supplies to 4,350 displaced families in Erbil, Ninewa, Dahuk, Zakho and Amedi. To learn more, please visit CRS.org/you-did-it-for-me. Ethical Guidance for End-of-Life Care Continual advances in medical technology bring many blessings, but also pose complex ethical questions. When is it appropriate to take measures to prolong life? When is it appropriate to allow death to take its natural course? Every circumstance and every individual is unique, and we cannot know in advance what the right course of action will be in all cases. But the Church can help us prepare by offering moral principles to guide our decisions or the decisions of those who may need to act on our behalf. On Wednesday, November 5, the Archdiocese of Washington s Department of Life Issues and St. Mary's Church in Rockville are co-sponsoring an evening workshop with Fr. Tad Pacholczyk from the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia, PA. He will address Church teaching on the dignity of the person as it relates to medical decision-making and advance directives for yourself or your loved one. The workshop will be held at St. Mary's Church in Rockville (520 Veirs Mill Rd.), with a welcome gathering at 7:30pm and the presentation beginning at 8pm. The workshop is free, but for planning purposes, you are encouraged to register at transformfear.org. For more information, contact Christa Lopiccolo at or clopiccolo@adw.org. The Month of All Souls at Catholic Cemeteries November is the traditional Month of All Souls, a time when the Church reminds us of all the brothers and sisters who are taking the same path toward heaven," some who are undergoing a purification before their full communion with God. While the souls in Purgatory can pray for us, they can no longer pray for themselves. The spiritual works of prayer, almsgiving and sacrifice on their behalf are up to us. Parishioners are encouraged to visit the sacred ground of the archdiocesan Catholic Cemeteries and our parish cemeteries during the month of November to pray for their departed loved ones and all the souls who await their fulfillment in Jesus Christ: All Souls Cemetery, Brink Rd., Germantown, MD, ; Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD, ; Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 1300 Bladensburg Rd., NE., Washington, D.C., ; Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Rd., Clinton, MD, ; St. Mary's Queen of Peace Cemetery, Dr. Johnson Road, Mechanicsville, MD, , and the many parish cemeteries throughout the archdiocese.
