The agricultural metaphors in all of today s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. Copyright J. S. 3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are in the section of the creed section of the Catechism under the article I Believe in Jesus Christ the Only Son of God. Here are this week s three questions, with the catechism s answer and my commentary. How is Jesus offering expressed at the Last Supper? At the Last supper with his apostles on the eve of his passion Jesus anticipated, that is, both symbolized his free self-offering and made it really present: This is my body which is given for you (Luke 22:19; emphasis added), This is my blood which is poured out (Matthew 26:28; emphasis added). Thus he both instituted the Eucharist as the memorial (1 Corinthians 11:25) of his sacrifice and instituted his apostles as priests of the new covenant. Commentary: The humanity of Christ is the instrument of God s saving power through which the power of sin is broken and human beings are freed for the service of God. Every event in our Lord s life, from the moment of his Incarnation to the moment of his death, is an expression of his self-offering to the Father, which has saving significance for us. For as the first Adam succumbed to the wiles of the Evil One and fell into his power, as did all his descendants, the second Adam defeated the Evil One every step along his earthly journey. He completed his victory by defeating death through his own death and making it possible for humankind to share in the eternity of the divine Life itself. When we are joined to the humanity of Christ by becoming members of his Body the Church through the Sacrament of baptism, and nourished in that humanity through participation in the Eucharist, the Sacrament of his Body and Blood, we receive the grace of salvation that his humanity has won for us. His death on the cross was the highest expression of his self-offering to the Father. That self-offering the life of Jesus given for us is made present for the faithful at every Mass so that, by entering into it and making it their own, they may experience its transforming effects. What happened in the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane? Despite the horror which death represented for the sacred humanity of Jesus who is the Author of life (Acts 3:15), the human will of the Son of God remained faithful to the will of the Father for our salvation. Jesus accepted the duty to carry our sins in Body becoming obedient unto death (Philippians 2:8). Commentary: The disobedience of Adam brought suffering and death to himself and to the whole human race. The obedience of Christ, the second Adam, defeated the tyranny of suffering and death and brought to fallen Man the Resurrection and eternal life. He did this by suffering and dying himself as an innocent victim out of love for his Father and for us. United to Christ, the faithful suffer and die with Christ so as to share in his Resurrection and eternal life. What are the results of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross? Jesus freely offered his life as an expiatory sacrifice, that is, he made reparation for our sins with the full obedience of his love unto death. This love to the end (John 13:1) of the Son of God reconciled all of humanity with the Father. The paschal sacrifice of Christ, therefore, redeems humanity in a way that is unique, perfect, and definitive; and it opens up for them communion with God. Commentary: Christ repairs the damage of sin by suffering its full damage in the humanity he assumed from the Blessed Virgin. Christ is the innocent victim who suffers willingly. The enormity of his suffering is alone sufficient to forgive the enormity of human sinfulness. For the enormity of Christ s suffering is the proof of God s faithful love, which alone can save us. 4 FROM THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible - This summer the School of Religion is offering a Bible study that you can enjoy with others in the school during eight Sundays. The series, ʺUnlocking the Mystery of the Bibleʺ is led by Jeff Cavins and Sarah Christmyer and it presents the ʺbigʺ picture of the Bible over the course of eight 30 minutes videos. You may experience the study by: Drop-in - come by the school library at 11am on any or all Sundays; July 16, 23,30 and August 6, 13, and watch the videos. If you like what you see, you may join a discussion group by following the directions below. Small group video and discussion - request the sign-up link by sending an to shreligioused4@gmail.com. We will send you an invitation to join the study using your address. Once you click on the link, you will be able to register and order the workbook. When there are four people registered for the study, all registered group members will have free online access to the videos. This means that if you are not able to meet with the study group on a given Sunday, you will still be able to view the video and complete your workbook page (as needed). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Americans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word Eucharist comes from the Greek for thanksgiving. For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. From Rome and Africa, over the next four centuries, the new liturgical language of Latin spread north to Gaul and Britain. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Ladies of Charity Activities: Thanks to the food pantry ladies who packed an additional 20 bags of food for distribution to families in Greenbelt receiving fresh produce. We will be assisting again with supplementing this fresh produce program in July. The St. Hugh food pantry is getting more requests for food assistance from families with children due to increased food needs when children are home during the summer and not getting breakfast and lunch at school. Thanks to our parishioners for their continued support of the pantry (healthy cereal, Chef Boyardee canned pasta, Progresso soups, boxed desserts, pudding, and spaghetti sauce always needed). Thanks to the COOP Food Store (Bob Davis, Manager) for continuing the $5 food bag donation program. The very generous shoppers at the COOP continue to give between bags a week to the St. Hugh food pantry. Volunteers Needed for Free Dental Care Program sponsored by Catholic Charities: Volunteers are needed on September 7th, 8th and 10th at the University of Maryland Xfinity Center to assist with client registration, escorting clients, and other general help. The Mid-Maryland Dental Mission of Mercy and Health Equity Festival helped over 2,000 clients in need in To sign up to volunteer go to St. Hugh Labor Day Bingo Weekend Volunteers Needed: Coming in mid-july look for sign-up for bingo volunteers (on-line or paper sign-up sheets in bulletin). This year Vegas ticket sellers will have special VEGAS HATS to wear to identify them. We also have a brand new DESK-TOP BINGO MACHINE for the bingo callers to use. Funds raised through the bingo support Ladies of Charity activities, Catholic Family Ministry and the Youth Group.

5 Natural Family Planning Awareness Week The theme for Natural Family Planning (NFP) Awareness Week, July 23-29, is It s time! Say ʹYesʹ to God s plan for married love!ʺ NFP Awareness Week is a national educational campaign of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to celebrate God s vision for marriage and promote the methods of NFP. These methods reflect the dignity of the human person within the context of marriage and family life, promoting openness to life and the gift of the child. By respecting the love-giving and life-giving nature of marriage, NFP can enrich the bond between husband and wife. For more information about NFP visit, Catholic Relief Services At 60 years old, Moussa Mai left his life behind to escape Boko Haram. He traveled for four days and arrived in the village of Kaya, Chad with nothing but the clothes on his back. His story is a common one for people fleeing violence. This is why Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is working with local Church partners in Chad to help 1,000 refugee and host families receive vouchers for two months worth of food and livestock. St. Camillus de Lellis Summer Camp at St. Hugh s Academic Enrichment Services, LLC will once again offer summer camp at St. Hugh s School, beginning on June 19th and running through July 28th. Students entering Kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to attend. Each one-week session will include recreation, academics, and team building activities. The three-month long volunteer campaign features 70 unique service opportunities throughout the Washington area.
