FROM THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION The School of Religion will be showing and discussing part V, the final part. of ʺA Biblical Walk Through the Mass: Understanding What We Say and Do in the Liturgyʺ on Sunday, February 5th from 11am-12noon. 3 From the Pastor In light of concerns raised by the recent White House order forbidding foreign nationals from certain predominantly Muslim countries from entering this country, Cardinal Wuerl wrote to all the priests of the Archdiocese. I thought I would share his letter with you to help gain some perspective on the issues involved. Please keep in mind that Catholics of good faith will often disagree on how the common good is best served through political action. Hopefully, Catholics will always remain united on the fundamental truths and demands of the gospel which Christ has revealed to his disciples. Yours in Christ, Father Walter ******** January 29, 2017 Dear Brother Priest, Today, I write to you regarding the recent White House executive order which suspended entry into the country of foreign nationals from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen, for 120 days, reduced the number of refugees to be admitted to the United States, indefinitely suspended the resettlement of Syrian refugees, and calls for heightened review procedures for these peoples. At this time, the legal situation is still fluid and news reports are sometimes confusing, but in the meantime, real people and real humanitarian concerns are being affected. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a statement on the matter. My hope is that you might find helpful these additional thoughts. As I recently noted, we are called to care for one another, whether it be our longstanding neighbor down the street, or a newcomer to our nation seeking relief from brutal religious and political persecution. It was earlier this month that our Holy Father reminded us that, Biblical revelation urges us to welcome the stranger; it tells us that in so doing, we open our doors to God, and that in the faces of others we see the face of Christ himself. Here in our Church of Washington, we strive to do just that every day, through our pastoral care, through our many services at the parish level and at Catholic Charities, and in some cases, by simply raising our voices to confirm the dignity of every human life. Last Friday at our Rallies and Masses for Life, and at the March for Life, our voices our presence could not be ignored in the defense of the unborn and life at every stage. So, too, now do we raise our voices in support of all refugees, especially those fleeing religious persecution. As the federal government pursues any legitimate national security concerns, we hope that it will do so not at the expense of innocent people who are in need, and that it will take all necessary actions to ensure that their safety is protected and that it will expedite all processes to address the need for humanitarian relief. Through organizations such as the Knights of Columbus and In Defense of Christians, we must continue to make our voices heard, urging the U.S. government to welcome in a particular way Christian refugees, who have been the object of genocide, and all men, women and children fleeing persecution, that they be protected and welcomed after swift but appropriate screening. Through our immigrant and refugee outreach programs, we must continue to serve as a visible sign of God s mercy and our solidarity with our brothers and sisters no matter how far they may have traveled. The political debate, which is complex and emotionally highly charged, will continue, but we must do our best to remain focused on the pastoral and very real work we undertake every day for the vulnerable and most in need... for the strangers at our doors. Any questions, please call Mary Ann Tretler (301) Spring Grove Hospital New Socks Project for February: All parishioners are invited to donate new socks for both men and women patients at Spring Grove Hospital. Boxes are at the back of church for sock donations. These socks are placed in Easter baskets for the patients Rice Bowl Project is coming: The School of Religion and Ladies of Charity will again sponsor the Rice Bowl Project this year during Lent. The St. Hugh Food Pantry just received their 2017 Rice Bowl Grant for $495. Look for more details about participating this year in future bulletins. SAVE THE DATE: St. Hugh Church/School/Rectory/Shed Spring Cleaning Event will take place on Saturday, April 22nd. This is a joint church organizations effort to be good stewards of our church spaces by removing items no longer in use to make room for our church organizations activity space needs. There will be volunteer opportunities to assist with this project! More details to come. Any questions, please call Mary Ann Tretler (301) SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD (MATTHEW 6:33) Many of our parishioners have received a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl in early January. He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2017 Cardinal s Appeal. The Cardinal s Appeal not only funds the operations of the archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. As in past years, the theme of the Appeal is, Seek First the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33) As we seek first the Kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us through our works of charity, our works of love, our works of love and compassion. Contributions to the Cardinal s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2017 Cardinal s Appeal. Mark your calendar for the 33rd annual Catholics in Annapolis on Feb. 15, 2017 from 3-8 p.m. The event begins at St. John Neumann Mission Church (620 N. Bestgate Rd.) from 3-4:30 p.m. with briefings from the Maryland Catholic Conference lobbyists on the relevant issues considered by the General Assembly from a faith perspective. Shuttles will be provided to take you to downtown Annapolis where you can meet your legislators from 5-6:30 p.m. Then, join us at a 6:30-8 p.m. reception (catered by the Iron Rooster) in the Miller Office Building on Rowe Blvd. for all the members of the General Assembly, the Maryland bishops and other Church leaders. (If you cannot make the 3 p.m. briefing, you are still welcome to come in time to visit legislators offices or just to attend the 6:30 p.m. reception.
