TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement was often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even healing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true last rite. We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to body and soul? Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 3 From the Pastor January is a boom time for the fitness industry since one of the top New Year s resolutions is to get into good physical condition. The gyms are full in January, less so in February, and by March things are back to normal. People s intentions can be good, but their wills are often weak. There is one resolution that, if carried out, strengthens the will to do all sorts of good things. This is the resolution to pray to God more regularly. Prayer in one sense is very simple and easy to do. It is the simple act of remembering God, thanking him for the moment, entrusting ourselves to his care, and allowing ourselves to be guided by his holy will. It involves speaking to him from our hearts and listening to him as he speaks his Word to us. Prayer in another sense is very hard to do because we all suffer the ill effects of sin. Like a car whose steering is out of alignment, we are tempted continually to forget God, to fail to recognize the obvious blessings in our lives, to take the weight of the world on our shoulders, and to make hasty and ill-advised decisions on all sorts of matters both great and small. The more we stay away from prayer, the easier it is to forget about it or to underestimate its power. The good news is that at any moment we can change this situation. One simple moment of prayer O God, help me! O God, help me to remember you! O God, help me to trust you! O God, thank you for this day! can correct the misalignment and get us back on the right track. The important thing is to continue on the right track through frequent recourse to prayer and to an ever-deepening and enlivening practice of prayer. It is really a matter of being very practical. Fortunately, prayer builds quickly upon itself. It immediately strengthens the will to make it easier for us to pray the next time. But we must also be realistic about prayer. It takes time for prayer to grow within us. We must not impose false expectations upon it. The heart of prayer is entrusting ourselves to God being content to let him rule our lives and trusting that he will do a very fine job, better than we can do without him. This attitude, of course, is a matter of faith. We must trust God and allow ourselves to be governed by his Word. Faith involves the surrender of our lives into the hand of God. Faith and prayer have a reciprocal relationship. Making an act of faith enables me to pray. Praying enables me to make an act of faith. Faith comes first, as a gift from God. But faith pushes me to pray, for faith is nourished on prayer. I hope to spend the next few weeks speaking a bit about prayer, to help us all grow in its practice, and so grow in our friendship with God. Thanks to all who contributed to the Christmas flowers that still adorn our sanctuary. Hopefully they ll last till Ash Wednesday. Thanks to Mr. Le and Ted Elsasser for setting up our outdoor decorations. Thanks to Deacon Desi and JoEllen Sarff, with help from Bridget McDermott and Carmen, Judith and Matthew Davino for setting up our indoor decorations. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus for donating the live wreaths. Thanks to Jennifer Goltz, Dr. Muller, Robin Pitts, the Boys and Girls Choir and the Parish Choir, for the beautiful music that adorned our holiday liturgies. Thanks to our altar servers, lectors, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion for their generosity in making sure all our liturgies during the holidays were well served. And thanks to all of you for being present to worship the Lord with such joy and faith. I pray the Lord is pleased with us and will continue to enlighten us along the path that leads to eternal life.

Invitation to Parish Youth: The Sodality Union of the Archdiocese of Washington is pleased to present an Essay/Drawing Contest with the winners to be announced Feb. 7, 2015 at St. Francis Xavier. Participants for the age groups 8-10, 11-12, and are asked to respond to the following question: What can I do to preserve the Earth? FATIMA GUILD NEWS -You are invited to join the St. Hugh Rosary Guild! An individual or family makes a commitment to pray the Rosary for one week, beginning on a Wednesday. Rosary Guild members bring an image of Our Lady of Fatima to the host household on Wednesday and will return the following week to take the image to its next host household. Rosaries and a Rosary Prayer Guide are provided. The sign-up sheet for hosting the Guildʹs Rosary Pilgrimage from January - June 2015 is located on the table in the back of the church. Contact Jessica at for information or with any questions. This coming Saturday, January 24, the Knights of Columbus will host a Spaghetti Dinner at 6pm in Grenoble Hall. A free-will offering will be requested to support the activities and ministry of our Knights of Columbus. School of Religion News: As you leave Church, check out our Confirmandi s saint reports. They are displayed on the bulletin board near the door closest to the school. This Sunday January 18 there is no class because of the Federal Holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dear St. Hugh Families, This past week, St. Joseph s Regional Catholic School hosted a meeting of all the elementary principals in the Archdiocese. They needed a venue that could give Wi-Fi access to all the principals. Thank you to Mr. Konar and Mr. Camerano for all your work upgrading our system in the last year, putting us on the forefront of technology! On Friday, our students had a half day. Mr. Tim O Connor, Director of Technology from the Archdiocese, came to train our teachers on free software and apps to use in the classroom to enhance education. Re-registration has already begun. Current students should re-register using the link sent to them. For new families entering K-8th, you may enroll on line by clicking on Registration and TADS link. New students will be accepted after January 28, 2015 for the school year. The application for pre-k is not through tads. Archdiocese 2015 Adult and Family Rally and Mass for Life Once again this year, the Archdiocese of Washington and the Association of Ecclesial Movements and New Communities will sponsor the Adult and Family Rally and Mass for Life on the morning of the National March for Life on January 22. This event for parishioners of the Archdiocese of Washington will be held at The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle (1725 Rhode Island Ave., NW). The Rally kicks off at 9am and features Sr. Maris Stella, S.V. (Sister of Life), as the main speaker. Fr. Avelino Gonzalez will celebrate the Mass, which begins at 10am. St. Matthew s Cathedral 175th Anniversary Choral Ecumenical Service The 2015 opening event in the 175th anniversary celebration of the Cathedral of St. Matthew Apostle as a parish will be a Choral Ecumenical Service Celebration, to be held at 3pm on Sunday, January 25 at the Cathedral (1725 Rhode Island Ave., NW). Thirteen neighboring Christian parishes have been invited to this special service. Renowned Rev. Cheryl Sanders of Howard University Divinity School will give the Gospel reflection, and three of the surrounding parish leaders will offer prayers. This observance will take place on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, the final day in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. All are invited to this opportunity to pray together, to be inspired by the Cathedral Schola s music, and to join in the reception following. Carter Griffin, Vice-Rector of St. John Paul II Seminary and Director of Priest Vocations for the Archdiocese of Washington, will lead a day of recollection on the theme of The Blessed Virgin Mary in the Life of the Disciple. This event will be held at Annunciation Church (3810 Massachusetts Ave., N.W.), and it is not required to be a member of BTCVS to attend this event! Cardinal Wuerl invites men in their 20 s-40 s who are considering a call to the priesthood to a retreat at Saint John Paul II Seminary (145 Taylor Street, NE), beginning Friday evening, February 6 and ending on Sunday, February 8 at noon. The retreat will allow men time away from their daily routine and provide an opportunity for prayer and reflection to examine God s call. It will cost you nothing more than your time. The theme for this year s conference is The Biblical Vision for Men. Our keynote speaker is Glenn Stanton, who serves as Director for Family Formation Studies at Focus on the Family. Bring your Bible with you! In his address Glenn will take us into the Scriptures to discover the biblical vision for men. Glenn has authored five books on marriage and family life, and he lives in Colorado Springs with his wife and five children. In addition to breakout sessions where you will have the opportunity to gain practical insights for living as a man with biblical vision, a highlight of this year s conference will include an opportunity to see the world class exhibit on the life of St. John Paul II and to venerate his relic at his national shrine located right here in the Archdiocese of Washington.
