1 Inside our Parish Pastoral Council October 1, 2017 THE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL is one of two bodies required by canon law to advise a pastor in the ministries, planning, administration, and operation of the parish. (The other is the parish finance council.) The council functions through 5 committees. It is not the role of pastoral council members to oversee or manage the parish ministries, organizations, and functions that make up the committee. It is the role of council members, among other things, to promote cooperation toward success of plans and projects throughout the parish.

A few months ago I asked the Parish Pastoral Council for their thoughts on the best way they could provide that advice in our parish. The suggestion was to make the Pastoral Council smaller, focus each meeting on a specific topic about parish life, and form committees that would do three things: 1.Bring related groups and ministries together to focus their goals and energies; 2.Be a bridge between parish organizations and the Pastoral Council; 3.Raise concerns and issues for conversation at the Pastoral Council meetings. The new structure for the Parish Pastoral Council is shown above. The Pastoral Council meets every other month, and the committees meet in the intervening months each six times a year. The goals of this structure are to help parish organizations involve new volunteers in their own planning and activities, to coordinate goals and activities with other organizations, and to promote common progress toward parish goals. This will be important as our new Pastoral Plan evolves this fall. God has placed all the gifts we need within our community, and we each should allow the Holy Spirit to empower and release those gifts. Imagine a parish with each member using their God-given gifts in a coordinated way: an unstoppable force for good in our communities. This new structure provides an initial point of contact as each of us considers what gifts God has given us for the benefit of our parish. If you would like to become involved in any of the committees, please visit the Parish Pastoral Council contact page on the parish website at STEAS.NET to send a message to the Pastoral Council. Do you have gifts that can benefit the parish through service on Parish Pastoral Council? Send me an at PASTOR@STEAS.NET or talk with me after Mass.
4 FAITH MATTERS MORNING JOIN US! On Wednesday, October 4 at 9:30 am in the Bayley Conference Room, we continue our scripture study of The Gospel of John. This week, in the segment The Testimony of John the Baptist, we focus on who exactly was John the Baptist, and what precisely was his message. We will study how John the Baptist completes and concludes the long history of the prophecies of the Holy Spirit, begun by Elijah, and aim for a deeper understanding of the meaning of John s words, which we say in each and every celebration of the Mass, The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." Contact: Mel Lee, melmolee@reagan.com. SPIRITSWORD No class on October 8. On October 15, we'll continue the series Reasons to Believe, featuring Dr. Scott Hahn and Mike Aquilina. In this presentation, "Apologetics: Faith, Science and the Persuasive Power of the Universe," Dr. Hahn explains the Church s position of Natural Theology, which counters the popular cultural belief that faith and reason are in opposition to each other. Contacts: Amy Rodgers, amycdid@yahoo.com; Denny and Chris Rowe, fx77fxe@gmail.com. NOTE: There is a slight time change. SpiritSword now starts 15 minutes later, running from 10:30 to noon on Sunday mornings. LIKE FALL? LOVE APPLESAUCE? Trail Life and American Heritage Girls could use your help! One of our largest fundraisers is working at the National Apple Harvest Festival in Biglerville, but we need help covering the booth October 7-8 and All volunteers get lunch and free admission. It s a fun way to enjoy the festival and help our troops. Sign up at or contact Bill, billashmantl@gmail.com. PARISH PHOTO DIRECTORY Photographers with LifeTouch will be back in 2 weeks to continue taking pictures for our new parish directory! Please see the information on the reverse side of the October calendar in today s bulletin. And, a special thank you to the volunteers who spent time at our Hospitality Table in order to get everyone checked in and ready for their sessions. We'll need help again, and you'll find that information on the back of calendar too. CALLING ALL AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS AND GIRL SCOUTS! Come learn about Our Lady of Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Our Lady of Fatima with a workshop for girls right here at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish on Saturday, November 4 from 2 to 4 pm. 5 HOLY HOUR FOR RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, at Saint Katharine Drexel Church, Mechanicsburg, from 12:15 to 7 pm. When battered by life s storms, or immersed in a dense fog of suffering and uncertainty, we may feel alone and unequipped to handle the circumstances. Yet with words that echo through thousands of years into the corners of our hearts, the Lord says to us, Do not fear: I am with you (Isaiah 41:10). He speaks these words not as one who merely observes our pain, but as one who experienced immense suffering. And the very wounds that bear witness to his suffering indicate the essence of our identity and worth: we are loved by God. Reflecting on the healed wounds of the Risen Christ, we see that even our most difficult trials can be the place where God manifests his victory. He makes all things beautiful. He makes all things new. He is always with us. Jesus promised this when he gave the disciples the same mission he gives to each of us: Go. Go be my hands and feet to a world enslaved by fear. Go to the woman who is unexpectedly pregnant and fears the future. Go to your friend who fears reprisal at work because he takes a stand for the protection of human life. Go to your aging parent in failing health who fears being a burden. And go to others, too, for their support. We don t need to have everything figured out. We can simply follow the guidance of Our Blessed Mother, the first disciple: Do whatever he tells you (John 2:5). Walk with each other. Do not be afraid to embrace God s gift of life. Whatever storms or trials we face, we are not alone. He is with us. Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). Prayer is a strong component of our life here at StEAS. Yet one thing that needs greater accessibility is Adoration with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Mass on First Fridays end with Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Building on that, starting in October, we are planning for First Fridays to be a time of Adoration with Exposition. We will start small but increase time as needed and supported. On Friday October 6, Exposition will begin following the 9 am Mass and end at 4 pm. Make time to be with our Lord during this time of Adoration. IN THIS 40TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF OUR PARISH, Archivist Rachel Burk has gathered memories from some of our founding members. We ll be sharing those in Seton Sunday and in the parish newsletter over the next month. Here s what this place looked like before we got here! SENIOR LUNCHEON & MOVIE The next film is The Encounter, and we ll begin with lunch at 11 am on Thursday, October 12. To reserve your spot, call Jeannie, ; or Colleen, OUR PARISH SHAWL MINISTRY resumes this month. The evening group will meet Tuesday, October 10, from 7 to 8:30 pm in the library. The morning group will meet Thursday, October 12, from 9:30 to 11 am in the café. New members are always welcome. Come learn to knit or crochet! Contact: Jan, STILL NEED BUTTER BRAIDS? You can place your orders until Friday, October 6!. Call or text Kaitlin Bonner, or her at kaitlin.bonner20@gmail.com. GET OUR WEEKLY PARISH NEWSLETTER EASY!
