TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When an altar is dedicated, the Rite of Dedicaton directs that, if possible, the relics of a martyr be mortared into the church floor under the mensa, or ʺaltar table.ʺ Up until this revised rite, the general practice was to include small relics of saints in an altar stone, a slab of marble that was normally set in the altar itself. Todayʹs rite states a clear preference for ʺmartyr,ʺ and for a substantial part of the body, in accord with our traditionʹs desire for substantial symbols. Martyr, of course, means ʺwitnessʺ in Greek, and was the title given early on to the people who by their death imaged the death of Christ. From the beginning, there has never been a shortage of such people, although it took a while for the Church to develop a process to declare someone a martyr. Saint Augustine tells how it was done in the fifth century. By then, popular opinion didnʹt count as much as an official tribunal set up by the bishop of the place where the martyr suffered. After the inquiry established that the person did indeed die for the faith, a metropolitan bishop had to ratify the decision before a shrine could be built or an altar set up over the martyrʹs tomb. For the most part, the honor paid to a martyr (called a ʺcultʺ) was restricted to that diocese, although the fame of some heroes spread so much that they were celebrated elsewhere. The age of the martyrs is now, and more people died for the faith in the twentieth century than ever before, witnessing to Christ to the end. Their sacrifice remains ʺthe seed of the Church.ʺ --Rev. Raising our Children in the Catholic Faith The archdiocesan Office of Family Life is sponsoring a workshop entitled ʺRaising our Children in the Catholic Faith,ʺ to be held on Saturday, September 22 from 9-11am at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Silver Spring, MD (805 Wayne Ave.). This workshop will address the needs of parents who share a desire to see their children grow in the Catholic faith. Parents who are single, divorced, separated, or widowed are encouraged to attend. Justice-Making Through a Franciscan Lens: The Womenʹs Retreat League of the Archdiocese of Washington invites you to a day of prayer focused on social justice. Sr. Marie Lucey, OSF, will direct this day-long retreat. Sister Marie serves as Associate Director for the Franciscan Action Network and advocates in Washington, DC on issues including immigration and refugees, human trafficking, peacemaking, prevention of gun violence and interfaith relationships. 4 St. Hughʹs Youth will begin meeting for the school year on Sunday, August 26 from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. in the youth group room of the school of religion. ALL YOUTH in grades 8-12 are welcome! Have friends in other schools or parishes? Bring them along! The more, the merrier! We will meet each week at the same time, although we will not meet September 2 due to Labor Day weekend. Questions? Our parish is preparing to provide faith formation for our young parishioners using the Adaptive Finding God series by Loyola Press and Teen Faith Mentors...We have chosen Blessed Margaret Castello, born with multiple disabilities and the patron saint of the unwanted, as our Patron Saint. We ask for her intercession as we pray for a successful launch to our ministry, in particular for our Adaptive Catechesis program, that by providing one-on-one catechesis for our special needs children our parish as a whole will be blessed. If you want to register your child or grandchild in our program, or you want to know more about being a catechist or a Teen Faith Mentor, we also want to hear from you.
