Abraham Lincoln THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST Today we have the beautiful story of the woman promised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embarrassment of riches? Not if we take Jesusʹ words about ʺwelcomeʺ to heart. The many challenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared generously with others. Todayʹs reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic instruction received by candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core belief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrection. Christʹs resurrection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 3 From the Pastor We pick up again with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are in the section of the creed section of the Catechism under the article I Believe in Jesus Christ the Only Son of God. Here are this week s three questions, with the catechism s answer and my commentary. How did Jesus conduct himself in regard to the Law of Israel? Jesus did not abolish the Law by God to Moses on Mount Sinai by giving it its definitive interpretation. He himself was the divine Legislator who fully carried out this Law. Furthermore, as the faithful Servant, he offered by means of his expiatory death the only sacrifice capable of making atonement for all the transgressions committed by men under the first Covenant (Hebrews 9:15). Commentary: Jesus, as the eternal Word of God made flesh, is both the Lawgiver as God and the one who perfectly interprets and fulfills the Law as man. Jesus distinguished what was temporary in the Law, that is, what was meant to apply only for a set period of time, such as the restrictions concerning what could or could not be eaten and the prescriptions about the kind of sacrifices that were to be offered to God, from what was permanent in the Law, such as the Ten Commandments and other moral teachings. Jesus fulfilled the Law by offering his life on the Cross as the one, perfect sacrifice which reconciles God and man and to which, henceforth, all the faithful are to join their own personal sacrifices as members of his Body, the Church. What was the attitude of Jesus toward the temple in Jerusalem? Jesus was accused of hostility to the temple. On the contrary, he venerated it as the house of his Father (John 2:16); and it was there that he imparted an important part of his teaching. However, he also foretold its destruction in connection with his own death and he presented himself as the definitive dwelling place of God among men. Commentary: During his earthly life, Jesus fulfilled the prescriptions of the Law by journeying to Jerusalem to honor his Father in the Temple dedicated to his Name. As the Son of God, he made it clear that the Temple in Jerusalem was but a sign pointing to his own Person; for Jesus is the true temple of God s presence among his people, abiding forever. Jesus foretold the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD and taught his disciples to understand it as a sign of the passage from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant. Did Jesus contradict Israel s faith in the one God and savior? Jesus never contradicted faith in the one God, not even when he performed the stupendous divine work which fulfilled the messianic promises and revealed himself as equal to God, namely the pardoning of sins. However, the call of Jesus to believe in him and to be converted makes it possible to understand the tragic misunderstanding of the Sanhedrin which judged Jesus to be worthy; of death as a blasphemer. Commentary: God, the Blessed Trinity, revealed himself to Israel as the one, eternal God, Creator of heaven and earth, who was also Israel s Father and Redeemer. But he did not reveal himself clearly as a Trinity of Persons. It was only with the sending of his Son into the world as man and with the Son s gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost that the one God manifested himself as a Trinity of Persons. The Jewish Sanhedrin tragically misunderstood Jesus testimony, believing that he was setting himself up as a rival to God instead of seeing him as he truly is: the Son of God, coeternal with the Father and Holy Spirit, with whom he is the one and only God worthy of all worship. Yours in Christ, Father Walter Children s Book Collection a HUGE Success! Thank you to everyone who donated books for the Springhill Lake Elementary School Summer Enrichment Reading Program.
