Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Reflection: Undertake an examination of conscience this week and pray for God s loving mercy. 3 From the Pastor Lent is defined as a penitential season. But what does it mean to do penance? Doing penance is part of the act of repentance, which contains both a positive and a negative element. The positive element is the joyful discovery, or renewed discovery, of the person of Christ, who meets us through his word in the depths of our conscience so that we might become his friends. The negative element is the shame and painful regret for our sinful behavior that this meeting with Christ inevitably elicits. When repentance happens, it brings about a mixture of joy and regret in our hearts. This simultaneous presence of both joy and regret is a sure sign that our repentance is genuine, that we have truly accepted Christ into our heart. If, in claiming repentance, we experience only joy and no regret or vice versa, then it is likely that Christ has not really entered our heart, or if he has, that we are in resisting him. Joy ( God loves me! ) without regret ( I have displeased God in these specific ways! ) indicates a failure to take responsibility for the harm our sinful behavior has caused. We cannot be healed of our sins unless we are prepared fully to embrace our guilt, which is a very painful thing to do. Without the accompanying pain, without a real contrition for sins, the experience of joy does not endure since it is not rooted in a genuine acceptance of Christ. Regret ( I have done awful and shameful things! ) without joy ( I know Christ forgives me because I have surrendered my life to him! ) indicates an unwillingness either to believe in or accept God s mercy. Why, we might ask, would anyone refuse God s mercy? There are at least two reasons why this happens. First, accepting God s mercy means acknowledging that one stands as a debtor before God, and that is excruciatingly difficult for a proud person who bases his worth on his accomplishments to do. Second, accepting God s mercy means making every effort to avoid sinful behavior in the future, and that is excruciatingly difficult for a double-minded person who is still very much in love with his sins to do. Here I stand, knocking at the door (Revelation 3:20). Christ is always knocking at the door of our heart, seeking admittance. Repentance is the act by which we let him in. It is sheer joy to do so because communion with Christ is the answer to every human prayer and need. It is also like dying, however, because to open the door means to forswear the pride and double-mindedness that are so much a part of us that to remove them is akin to cutting out one s own heart. (Of course, if we do it, Christ will give us a new heart.) We have to convince ourselves that the pain of repentance is worth the joy, and that the joy will in time predominate more and more over the pain as our repentance becomes deeper and more enduring. And we need to convince ourselves of this now, since the more we postpone repentance, the more difficult and less likely it becomes. Jesus warns us that unless we repent, we will grow only more fond of our sins until our hearts become so hardened that we will have no desire to give them up, and the thought of eternal loss will scarcely trouble us. Yours in Christ, Father Walter Solemn Annual Exposition March 13 and 14 Our annual 40 Hour devotions will be March 13 th and 14 th. Fr. 5 From the Director of Religious Education Saint of the Week Saint Patrick, March 17 This day is not all about leprechauns, shamrocks and green beer. This is a day to honor and pray to St. Patrick. He was an influential saint who, 1,500 years ago, brought Christianity to the little country of Ireland. He was born in the British Isles, was carried off while still very young during a raid on Roman Britain by the Irish and sold as a slave. At the end of six years he contrived to escape to Europe, became a monk and was ordained; he then returned to Ireland to preach the Gospel. During the thirty years that his missionary labors continued he covered the Island with churches and monasteries; in 444 he founded the metropolitan see of Armagh. After fifteen centuries he remains for all Irishmen the great bishop whom they venerate as their father in the Faith. Not many facts are known about the life of St. Patrick. Records place his birth around the year 387 and his death on 17 March either in 493 or in 460. When he was about 16, while he was tending his sheep some Irish raiders captured him and made him a slave. He eventually was able to escape and return to Britain. There he heard the call to return and bring Christianity to Ireland. He was ordained a priest, consecrated a bishop and came back to Ireland around 435 AD. Many legends are associated around St. Patrick: how he drove the snakes out of Ireland, and the use of the shamrock to teach the mystery of the Trinity. Whether or not the legends are true, St. Patrick succeeded in bringing Catholicism to Ireland, and in time, the whole country converted from their pagan gods to the one true God. Although a small country, Ireland has played a large role in saving and bringing Christianity throughout the world. During the early Dark Ages, the Irish monasteries preserved Western writings while Europe remained in darkness. But as the Catholic country remained solidly Catholic, the Irish spread the faith to all corners of the world. To learn more on this subject, read Thomas Cahill's How the Irish Saved Civilization. We have a few works attributed to St. Patrick, one being his autobiography called Confessions. It is a short summary of the events in his life, written in true humility. Below is a short excerpt: I am greatly God's debtor, because he granted me so much grace, that through me many people would be reborn in God, and soon after confirmed, and that clergy would be ordained everywhere for them, the masses lately come to belief, whom the Lord drew from the ends of the earth, just as he once promised through his prophets: "To you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Our fathers have inherited naught hut lies, worthless things in which there is no profit." And again: "I have set you to be a light for the Gentiles that you may bring salvation to the uttermost ends of the earth." Prayer for the Third Week of Lent This prayer is designed to be said within the family before a Crucifix during the third week of Lent. Mother or a child: From the words of the Divine Office. This time of fasting has opened to us the gates of paradise. Let us accept it praying and beseeching that on the day of resurrection we may be glorified in the Lord. In all circumstances we must conduct ourselves as God's ministers, in much patience. Father: Hail, O Cross! You are hallowed by the body of Christ; Family: his members adorn you as pearls. Father: Let us pray. Lord, God all-powerful, accept our poor prayers and stretch out your powerful hand to defend us. This we ask of you through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Family: Amen. Favor this dwelling, Lord, with your presence. Far from it repulse all the wiles of Satan. Your holy angels let them live here, to keep us in peace. And may your blessing remain always upon us. This we ask of you through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Father: Let us bless the Lord. Family: Thanks be to God. Father: May the almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless and keep us. Family: Amen.
