3 From the Pastor There are many images we could use to describe Lent. One that I have proposed in the past is the image of Lent as a spiritual retreat. As we hear in this Sunday s gospel, before beginning his transition from private life to public ministry, Jesus retreated into the desert for forty days. Why did he go into the desert? There are at least three reasons I can think of. He wanted to enter into the silence of the desert so he could commune more profoundly with his Father. He wanted to confront the devil in a place that, by tradition, is haunted by the evil one. He wanted to prepare himself for the Way of the Cross that lay before him. Lent is our opportunity to retreat from our accustomed patterns of daily living, if even for a few precious moments each day, in order to: Commune more profoundly with our heavenly Father. Confront and overcome the demons that haunt us. Strengthen ourselves in the Way of the Cross. Let me say a word about each. 1. Throughout his earthly life, Jesus frequently withdrew from his disciples and the crowds in order to spend time alone in communion with his Father. He understood that the strength of his human nature depended upon the solidity and permanence of his relationship with the Father. During the forty days of Lent, I invite you to withdraw daily to spend some minutes alone with God by meditating on his Word in Sacred Scripture. (Use the Word Among Us resource that was given out last Sunday.) Use the time to rest in his presence and listen to his voice speaking to you in the depth of your conscience. Draw close to him as he draws close to you. 2. Jesus came to rescue humankind from its captivity to the principalities and powers, to the deadly demons of pride, gluttony, lust, sloth, sadness, greed, anger, envy, and overreliance on material comfort which seek to tear us away from our communion with God. Jesus overcame the demons that confronted him by relying solely on the Father s love for him, by remaining always in communion with him. During the forty days of Lent, I invite you to overcome the demons that confront you by allowing Jesus to take full possession of your heart. Draw strength from the fount of grace that flows from his Cross and chase the demons away. Let Jesus heal you of your addiction to sin. Let him strengthen your will against every sin and temptation. Let him set you free. 3. Jesus experienced the deprivations of the desert in order to prepare himself to walk Way of the Cross. The Way of the Cross is God s remedy for sin. It is the sole road that leads to heaven. It is the road we must walk with Jesus if we are to overcome sin and death and come to the Resurrection from the dead. We are able to walk the Way of the Cross because Jesus first walked it himself. He willingly bore the full weight of our suffering through his passion and cross. Even now, it is only in and through Jesus that we are able to follow the Way of the Cross and endure its hardships. When we walk the Way of the Cross with faith and love, we do not suffer alone. Jesus suffers in and with us and brings forth from our sufferings the fruits of holiness. During the forty days of Lent, I invite you to walk the Way of the Cross with Jesus. Do not shrink from the hard effort needed to overcome the seven deadly sins through acts of humility, bodily discipline, frequent and heartfelt prayer, hopefulness, mildness, gratitude, and moderation. Take your share in the Cross of Christ so that you may lead others to Christ that all of us, on the last Day, may share in the Resurrection of the dead and live forever in the peace of God s kingdom. For the next few weeks our parish Special Needs Ministry will be publishing articles from the resource, Opening Doors of Welcome and Justice to Parishioners with Disabilities: A Parish Resource Guide, a publication of the National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NACP) in Washington, DC. We hope you find these articles informative and helpful. We recognize disability and vulnerability as a normal, anticipated reality of the living process. In sharing this truth, we can allay society's fears and alleviate misjudgments about the quality of a life lived with disabilities. 5 Lenten Rice Bowls: Please pick up your rice owl this weekend as part of your alms giving during the season of Lent. Your rice bowl donations support Catholic Relief Services programs worldwide as well as locally. The St. Hugh Food Pantry has benefited from a local Rice Bowl Grant for the past four years. The Rice Bowl Program at St. Hugh is being coordinated by the Ladies of Charity and School of Religion. 40 Days for Life College Park asks you to pray daily for God's favor to turn hearts and minds toward family life and away from abortion. We ask you to pray at least one hour each week in peaceful vigil at the public sidewalk outside the MFPI abortion facility at 5915 Greenbelt Rd., College Park. Vigil times are 6am to 10pm daily March 6 through April 14. All are welcome to attend the Sanctity of Life Prayer Service led by Rev. Thomas LaHood, 12noon to 1pm Wednesday Mar 13th. The Statement of Peace for vigil participants is found on: local-campaigns/college-park/. For info phone Tom, Help Unite Greenbelt (HUG) Walk will occur on Sunday, March 31st@1pm beginning at Greenbelt Station and continuing on to Springhill Lake Recreation Center, Buddy Attick Lake, Roosevelt Center, Greenbriar Community Center, Windsor Green Community Center and finally at Schrom Hills Park. This walk is being coordinated by RUAK (Random Unselfish Acts of Kindness) and St. Hugh Ladies of Charity is a cosponsor. There will be transportation between walking sites. There will also be donation boxes at each site to collect non-perishable foods for the St. Hugh Food Pantry. This is an effort to join with your neighbors to celebrate Greenbelt as a special "Warm and Welcoming" place that we call HOME.
