3 From the Pastor Throughout the summer I will be using this column to do some adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. It was put together and published under the authority of the American bishops. Catechesis (instruction in the faith) is a life-long task (even for priests!). We wish to deepen our understanding of what God has revealed not only to grow closer to him, but also to communicate the faith to others. For, it is Jesus desire that all come to believe in him, that they might receive the Holy Spirit and become sharers of the divine life. We begin this week with the section on the Creed. I will reproduce the questions and answers from the Compendium and add my own commentary. Every week we will cover three questions. What are the symbols of faith? The symbols of are composite formulas, also called professions of faith or Creeds with which the Church from her very beginning has set forth synthetically and handed on her own faith in a language that is normative and common to all the faithful. Commentary: No doubt most people are familiar with the word Creed. It is a formal statement of one s belief. Many of us are probably not familiar with the use of the word symbol as a synonym for Creed. That, however, it what is means here. The symbols of faith are the various creeds the Church has used throughout her history to express, in summary fashion, the essentials of her faith. What are the most ancient symbols (professions) of faith? The most ancient symbols of faith are the baptismal creeds. Because Baptism is conferred in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19), the truths of faith professed at Baptism are articulated in reference to the three Persons of the Most Holy Trinity. Commentary: Christ revealed that the God of the Old Testament, the God of Israel, the one and only God, is in fact a Trinity of Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Every Christian symbol, or creed, is a profession of God as Three-in-One. Whenever anyone is baptized, they are asked to profess their belief in the Holy Trinity (or their parents and godparents are if the person has not yet attained the age of reason). Catholics in the United States solemnly renew their baptismal profession of faith in the Holy Trinity each year on Easter Sunday. When we make the sign of the Cross, we are praying in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and professing our faith in the Blessed Trinity, the One God. What are the most important symbols of the faith? They are the Apostles Creed which is the ancient symbol of the Church of Rome and the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed which stems from the first two ecumenical Councils, that of Nicea (A.D. 325) and that of Constantinople (A.D. 381) and which even to this day are common to all the great Church of the East and the West. Commentary: If we pray the rosary regularly, we are very familiar with the Apostles Creed, for the rosary begins with this symbol of faith. It is called the Apostles Creed not because the apostles composed it, but because it is a summary of the apostles teaching on the Blessed Trinity and what the Trinity has done for our salvation. In the baptism ritual, the priest or deacon who is performing the baptism recites the articles of the Apostles Creed and asks the persons being baptized (or their parents and godparents) if they believe in them. The Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, sometimes simply called the Nicene Creed, is recited every Sunday at Mass. It is a bit more expansive than the Apostles Creed, though it expresses the same faith. Yours in Christ, Father Walter P.S. Congratulations to all our graduates, from 8 th grade, high school, college, and graduate school. Every graduation is a celebration of accomplishment. It also marks a transition in life. Graduations are times of joy, but also sometimes of trepidation. What will the future hold? It is always good to remember in times of transition that there is one thing that never changes: the love God has for us and his active Presence in our lives, working for our good. St. Paul once said, If God is for us, who can be against us? If our primary goal in life is to please God in all things, then we have no reason to fear the future. God will not withhold his blessings from us. He will see us safely through the ups and downs of this life and open for us the gates of eternal life when it pleases him to take us from this world.

4 To mark the Year of Mercy, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be recited after the 5 p.m. Mass on the third Saturday of every month through the end of the Jubilee Year. Please join us for this beautiful prayer. If you donʹt know it, pamphlets will be available to help in the recitation. From the School of Religion: Do you have free time this summer? Want to plan a trip but are short on cash? Try visiting: and take yourself and your family on a virtual tour or e-pilgrimage to Italy, the Philippines, or anywhere in the United States. Upcoming School Events: June 10th-Graduation; June14th-Last Day of School; July 11th-15th-Vacation Bible School; Aug. 19th-2nd Annual Golf Tournament Zach Hooker, Principal School s Website- Facebook- stjosephbeltsville; Comfort the Afflicted: When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. Jesus wept (Jn 11:32-33, 35). When we see someone afflicted, what can we do for them? Jesus encounters and consoles Mary by sharing in her grief. Sometimes, Jesus is reminding us, the best comfort is to sit with them and cry. We don t have power over death as Jesus did, yet like him we can still comfort with our presence and prayers, and trust in the power of the ultimate Comforter, the Holy Spirit. Learn more about the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy at mercy.adw.org. Jubilee Year of Mercy June 5, 2016 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six months of extraordinary celebrations. The Incarnation mystery: Jesus advent, nativity, epiphany. The Paschal mystery: Jesus passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost s Holy Spirit. The solemnities of Holy Trinity and Jesus Body and Blood. Today the Church resumes Sundays in Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her husband and only son deceased, this woman s material support, in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on society s peripheries. One of Pope Francis hopes in calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to transform us into more extraordinary Christians, by making our caring outreach to just such vulnerable people, and our practical self-sacrificing love for them, our ordinary, daily, Christian way of life!
