3 From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are in the section of the creed section of the Catechism under the article I Believe in Jesus Christ the Only Son of God. Here are this week s three questions, with the catechism s answer and my commentary. Why does Jesus call upon his disciples to take up their cross? By calling his disciples to take up their cress and follow him Jesus desires to associate with his redeeming sacrifice those who are to be the first beneficiaries. Commentary: The Lord defeated sin and death by suffering and dying on the cross. Suffering, borne out of love, is the means by which humanity is freed from its captivity to sin and death is overcome. Christ gives his disciples a share in his redemptive suffering through the trials they offer up to God in union with the sacrifice of Christ. Christ suffers in the suffering of his members, and when his members accept their suffering in faith and make of it an offering to God, Christ manifests his redemptive power by bringing salvation to those who suffer for his sake. In what condition was the body of Christ while it lay in the tomb? Christ underwent real death and a true burial. However, the power of God preserved his body from corruption. Commentary: Psalm 16 speaks of Christ in the words, For you will not leave my soul among the dead, nor let your beloved know decay. Christ truly died. His soul departed his body as his body lay in death in the tomb. But, since Christ was ever-faithful to his Father, the Father would not allow his body to undergo corruption as a sign of his favor. We see this favor extended to the body of Blessed Virgin Mary since she, through the power of Christ working in her, was without stain of sin. God has also extended this favor to certain saints, like St. Bernadette, as a visible sign to the Church of how God rewards those who believe in him and trust in his promises. What is the hell into which Jesus descended? This hell was different from the hell of the damned. It was the state of all those, righteous and evil, who died before Christ. With his soul united to his divine Person Jesus went down to the just in hell who were awaiting their Redeemer so they could enter at last into the vision of God. When he had conquered by his death both death and the devil who has the power of death (Hebrews 2:14), he freed the just who looked forward to the Redeemer and opened for them the gates of heaven. Commentary: The Old Testament Scriptures speak of the existence of an abode of the dead, called Sheol (translated as Hades in the Greek version of the Old Testament). It is a shadowy place where the souls of the dead continue in existence even as their bodies disintegrate in the grave. It was to this place that Christ descended after his death (the hell that is mentioned in the Apostles Creed) to afford its residents the opportunity of embracing him and the salvation he had won for them by his death on the cross. The Sheol or Hades that the Old Testament speaks of was a place of temporary waiting until the coming of Christ. It is different from the place of eternal damnation that Christ speaks of frequently in the New Testament. This place, called Gehenna or hell, is the place of final disposition for those who have rejected God and refused his offer of grace. Distinct both from Hades and hell is Purgatory. Purgatory is the temporary state of those persons who died in the grace of Christ but who are undergoing a period of purgation from the venial sins still on their souls at the time of their death. Ladies of Charity Activities: Thanks to Barbara Hamilton for coordinating the additional 20 bags of non-perishable food for home delivery as part of the July Greenbelt Fresh Produce Program. We will again assist with this program in August. The food pantry continues to need healthy cereal like Cheerios, spaghetti sauce, mac n cheese, Chef Boyardee canned pasta, boxed desserts like brownies, pudding cups, and Progresso soups. The need is great during the summer for pantry families due to children being out of school and not getting school breakfast and lunch. Welcome new pantry volunteers Agnes Diouf and Celeste Yeager. School Supplies for Springhill Lake Elementary School: We continue our work with the Prince George s County Schools Faith Based Partners Committee. We are collecting composition books (wide rule), crayons, glue sticks, #2 pencils, notebook paper (college rule), and book bags. You can leave your donations in the marked boxes at the back of church. There are really good school supply sales happening now at Staples, Walmart and Target Stores. Catholic Charities Workshop on Domestic Violence: We are in the planning stages with Catholic Charities to have St. Hugh Ladies of Charity host a Domestic Violence Leadership Workshop sometime in October, Stay tuned for further details.

6 Dear Parishioners: Next weekend one of our graduates from St. Hugh s School, Faith Berard, will be speaking at the conclusion of all the Sundays Masses. She is beginning of missionary apostolate to Boston University to witness to Christ as a part of the FOCUS organization and is seeking our support. Her brother, Fr. Jack Berard, who was ordained for the Archdiocese of Washington last year, was also a FOCUS missionary. FOCUS missionaries make a true leap of faith for Christ and the Church. They are worthy of our support. Below is Faith s appeal letter. Please read it prayerfully. Fr. Walter ******** Man cannot fully find himself without a sincere gift of self Pope Saint John Paul II My name is Faith Berard, and I m a full-time missionary with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) at Boston University. I m a proud graduate of the Class of 2009 from St. Hugh s School and I m happy to have been a part of this community since my childhood. Since my time at St. Hugh s, I attended Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg (Class of 2013) and Mount St. Mary s University (Class of 2017) where I studied Theology and Political Science. During my time at the Mount, I encountered Jesus Christ in the Sacraments, daily prayer, genuine friendships, Bible study, among many other means. Through spending one-on-one time with FOCUS missionaries on campus, I was able to gain a perspective on the world and the people in it that I might not have otherwise. I came to realize the beauty of Christ and His Church and the need for all people to be exposed to the Truth of their human dignity and worth. I have a desire to share this message with college students because it was life-changing for me to hear it during those formative years. Through deep, personal investment with these students, I hope to win the hearts and minds of young people and make a lasting impact in their lives by facilitating encounters with Jesus Christ. Beginning in August, myself and over 600 FOCUS missionaries will arrive on over 125 college campuses across the country in order to fulfill the Great Commission that Jesus parted from us with ( Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations Mt. 28:18-20). The students that we will be working with will go on to do great things: inviting their friends back to Church or for the first time, getting married in the Church and raising the next generation as faithful Catholics in parishes, and even discerning religious and priestly vocations - there have been over 500 religious vocations since 1998! The need is great. Now all I need are great people to fill the need. As a missionary I am responsible for fundraising 100% of my mission budget with the help individuals like you. I cannot do work God has called me to without your partnership. Please consider joining my monthly support team with a financial donation and your prayers. By supporting me, you re not just donating money, you are joining me in the mission to build up leaders, change the world for Christ, and save souls. If you have any questions, would like to learn more, or are interested in being a member of my support team on this mission, please do not hesitate to reach out! Give me a call: Shoot me an faith.berard@focus.org Check out my website: focus.org/missionaries/faith-berard Some give by going, others go by giving; without both, there is no mission St. Teresa of Calcutta

7 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The achievement of the late 1960s and early 1970s in enriching the euchology or words of thanksgiving available in the Church s prayer is important on many levels. Ecumenically, it means that the Latin Rite now reflects the wealth of the East in having more than one prayer available to the Church. Pastorally, it actually acknowledges the place of the assembly in prayer, which is particularly clear in the Masses with Children. In fact, the traditional prayers of the Eastern Church served as models for our new prayers. In the East, what we call the Eucharistic Prayer is called the anap ho ra, and there are three main families of anap ho ra. Each family has a different recipe for arranging the usual parts of these prayers. All anap ho ra have intercessions included, but the Churches of Antioch place them toward the end of the prayer, Alexandria prefers them at the beginning before the Holy, Holy, and Syria puts them at the very end. One branch of the Syrian family is unique in not mentioning the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. The Roman Canon we once prayed exclusively has some connection with the Alexandrian family, but once the signal for creativity was given, all the wealth of every prayer tradition was on the table, and our Sunday Mass has been greatly enriched. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. LISTEN TO YOUR DREAMS God visits Solomon in a dream, and the scripture story nowhere tells us that Solomon awoke to have this conversation with God! So, still in his dream, Solomon answers God s question about what he desires most, and God grants his request for wisdom in abundance. In our waking hours, we are much distracted by work, home, family, traffic, entertainment, and many worries. When we try to think about what we really want out of life, we have trouble even imagining what that might be. But deep inside, our real longings dwell, known to God and to the Holy Spirit. Our dreams, unencumbered by defenses, may hold clues to what our deepest needs are, or what bothers us most. They could be God speaking. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Did you know? Our own St. Hugh Ladies of Charity represents our parish in the Prince George s County Faith Based Partners Committee. The information in this flyer is one of the ways the committee facilitates communication to families in our faith communities.
