3 From the Pastor Next Tuesday, August 15th, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady. It is one of the six holydays of obligation in our liturgical calendar. Holydays of obligation celebrate important mysteries of our faith. On the Solemnity of the Assumption we celebrate the mystery of Mary being assumed, that is, taken body and soul, into heaven. From earliest days the Church has considered the bodily resurrection of the Blessed Virgin Mary as one of the teachings passed on to her by the apostles, even though it is not explicitly mentioned in Sacred Scripture. Belief in Mary s bodily resurrection as the fruit of her Son s resurrection and ascension into heaven is rooted in an understanding of her particular role in God s plan of salvation, to which Scripture gives ample testimony. Belief in Mary s immaculate conception the teaching that she was not conceived as a fallen creature like the rest of humanity, but immaculately, that is, without stain of sin and her assumption the teaching that upon reaching the end of her days she entered body and soul into heaven are predicated upon her unique role as Mother of God and New Eve. When the Church declares Mary to be the Mother of God, she affirms that Mary was the true source of the human nature that the Son of God united to his divine nature. God did not simply create a perfect human being and place him in the womb of Mary. Christ, God s Son, received his humanity from Mary, as every other human being receives his or her humanity from their mother. Christ is unique, however. He received his humanity only from his mother since he had no human father. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit. If Christ received his humanity from Mary, what sort of humanity did she communicate to him: a fallen humanity or a sinless humanity? It is inconceivable that Mary would have communicated a fallen humanity to her Son, for a fallen humanity means a humanity that is defective, i.e., lacking in certain essential features. If Christ had received a fallen humanity from his mother he would not have been perfect Man, nor would he have been the new Adam, as St. Paul calls him (1 Corinthians 15:45). Instead, he would have been but one more member of a doomed and fallen race. No, Mary communicated to her Son an immaculate, sinless humanity. But where did she receive this sinless humanity? Was she not the daughter of Joachim and Ann, both members of the fallen race of man? Indeed, she was their daughter. And unless God had intervened in an utterly unique way, they would have passed their fallen humanity on to their daughter. But we believe God did intervene. As a kind of first fruits of the redemption that Jesus won for us on the Cross, God gave Mary a full portion of his redeeming grace at the very moment of her conception so that she was immaculately conceived. The humanity she received from Joachim and Ann was redeemed from the very instant she came to be. This is what we profess every December 8th when we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Mary, therefore, is a new kind of human being, made new by Christ, her son. She is pure and sinless. As such, she is the New Eve, a title that goes back to at least the 2nd century in the writings of St. Irenaeus: Mary the Virgin is found to be obedient, saying, Behold, O Lord, your handmaid; be it done to me according to your word, Eve, however, was disobedient; and when yet a virgin, she did not obey. Just as she, having become disobedient, was made the cause of death for herself and for the whole human race, so Mary, being obedient, was made the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race. Thus the knot of Eve s disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. Mary s humanity is pure and sinless, wrought for her by God through the redemption won by Christ. She freely preserved this sinlessness throughout her life so that she is truly called all-holy or, as they say in the Eastern Church, panagia. It is this pure and sinless humanity that she passed on to her Son when the Holy Spirit overshadowed her and Christ was conceived in her womb. If Mary is all-holy, if her humanity is without defect, did she die? For, we know that God did not make death, and death is the bitter consequence of sin (Wisdom 1:13; Romans 5:12-13). The Church has not taught definitively on the question. Some believe that Mary did not die but passed immediately into heaven when her sojourn on earth was completed. Others believe that she did indeed die but was soon thereafter raised from the grave since, sharing to a preeminent degree in the redemptive grace of her Son, death and judgment could not hold her bound. In either case, our faith professes that Mary has already passed body and soul beyond the boundaries of death and judgment and now reigns in heaven as Mother and Queen of all the faithful. Her reign is a participation in the reign of her Son. She is Queen because no other disciple is more closely united to Christ than she. Therefore, no other disciple is able to better mediate the grace of Christ by their merits and prayers than she. That is why the Church, in asking for the prayers of the saints, has first recourse to her intercession. As New Eve, Mary exemplifies the character and destiny of all the redeemed. For all of us who have been received the redemptive grace of the Cross in baptism are born again into the humanity of the new Adam and the new Eve. We have been given power from above to become holy and pure and are destined by that grace to reign in heaven with Christ. Therefore, the song of Mary in Scripture is truly the song of all the redeemed: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, For he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day, all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me, And holy is his Name. Yours in Christ, Father Walter
