3 From the Pastor This Wednesday the Church begins her annual Lenten journey of spiritual renewal. The forty days of Lent recall the forty days that Jesus spent fasting in the desert before entering upon his public ministry, and the forty years that Israel wandered in the desert before entering into the Promised Land. The Church invites us to enter into the discipline of Lent in order to overcome sin and grow in the life of grace and so enter into eternal life when we leave this world. In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus prescribes three ways to detach ourselves from sin and grow closer to him and his Father: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer that is nourished by the word of God sustains and deepens our personal friendship with Christ. Fasting, with the bodily hunger it causes, spurs us to hunger for the One who alone can satisfy our deepest longings. Almsgiving, through which we give of our time, talent and treasure to those in need, frees us from the prison of a selfish heart. These three disciplines, which flow from the supernatural virtues of faith, hope and love, strengthen our ability to follow Jesus along the way of the Cross and so pass successfully through the narrow gate that leads to Resurrection and eternal Life. Assisted in our work by the Holy Spirit, we come to a more profound knowledge of our inner poverty and need for God. The Lord enlarges our hearts and makes them more capable of receiving his love. God works to free us from our sinful thoughts and behaviors, but we must do our part. He is waiting to show us mercy. We receive his mercy when we cling to his Son through faith and strive to love God and our neighbor as Jesus has taught us. So let s rouse ourselves to enter passionately into the discipline of Lent! Let s do it for love of Jesus and for the sake of his Kingdom!! In ancient Israel, a seven-branched candelabrum called a menorah burned brightly in the Temple before the Presence of the Lord. Here are seven ways that we can show forth the light of Christ this Lent here in our parish: 1) Be present for one of the Masses on Ash Wednesday to receive ashes. 2) Add five minutes to your routine of daily prayer by using the Five Minutes With the Word booklets that can be found this weekend in the back of church. 3) Come to the Stations of the Cross on Fridays this Lent, either at 12 noon or at 7:00 pm. 4) Undertake some work of self-denial during Lent as an expression of your desire to prefer the love of Christ to every worldly comfort (examples: give up a favorite food, give up a favorite television program, give up time on U-Tube, fast one day a week). 5) Take part in the Rice Bowl faith-in-action program or some other charitable activity (such as giving to the Lenten food drive or the sock collection for the poor) as a concrete way of extending mercy to those in need. 6) Participate in one or more of the liturgies of the Sacred Triduum the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday. 7) Make a sincere and thorough confession of your sins prior to Easter, either here at St. Hugh s or elsewhere. I also encourage you to do some spiritual reading this Lent, as you are able. Here are ten suggested titles, presented in no particular order: Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Abandonment to Divine Providence. A spiritual classic written in the 1700 s. St. Augustine. The Confessions. One of the most influential spiritual writings of all time, the moving story of the saint s conversion to Catholicism. St. Francis de Sales. Introduction to the Devout Life. A spiritual classic written for lay people providing wise counsel on how to grow in holiness amidst the many tasks of everyday life. F. J. Sheen. Theology for Beginners. A clear introduction to the central doctrines of the faith for the average lay person by a brilliant practical evangelist. M. Eugene Boylan. This Tremendous Lover. A remarkably lucid and sound guide to the spiritual life written for the lay person in the world. Thomas Merton. Life and Holiness. A practical and beautiful exposition of the spiritual life.

4 Robert Barron. The Strangest Way: Walking the Christian Path. An arresting presentation of how to walk faithfully in the path of Christ. Jacques Philippe. Searching for and Maintaining Peace. A very clear presentation of how to attain peace in one s heart. Blessed Columba Marmion. Christ, the Life of the Soul. A clear presentation of the spiritual life steeped in Scripture and the Church s liturgy, by a spiritual master. Andrea Tornielli. Fioretti: The Little Flowers of Pope Francis. An engaging and inspiring collection of stories about Pope Francis showing how the gospel is put into action. All of these books can be ordered through Amazon.com. May the Lord grant us a new springtime in our relationship with him. And may the maternal care of Mary, the Mother of God, accompany us this Lent and nurture in us a closer friendship with her Son. All parishioners are welcome and encouraged to participate. The Rice Bowls will be distributed to all parishioners after Masses this weekend, February 10th-11th. It was wonderful to see so many of our parents and families stay for the Gathering on January 28th and February 4th to watch the short videos that CRS produced for the Rice Bowl Project. I was especially touched when our children and families began to clap after watching the video about the story of a man from Ghana whose life was changed by the way CRS used the funds collected from the Rice Bowl Project. What a big difference a small sacrifice can make! Each of our religious ed students will receive their own rice bowl this Sunday and make a promise to pray, fast and serve for others this Lent. Please join Maryland s bishops and hundreds of fellow Catholics for the Maryland Catholic Conference s 34th Annual Catholics in Annapolis on Thursday, February 22. Catholics in Annapolis provides parishioners the opportunity to speak in person with elected officials about issues important to our faith, such as caring for the poor, supporting low-income students in Catholic schools, and physician-assisted suicide. It is one of the best attended advocacy events in Annapolis, and the format, which includes an evening reception with legislators, allows everyone to gather in one place and convey the strong engagement of Catholics in matters of public policy. The event begins at St. John Neumann Mission Church (620 N. Bestgate Road) from 3-4:30 p.m. with briefings on the relevant issues considered by the General Assembly from a faith perspective. Shuttles will be provided to downtown Annapolis where you can meet your legislators from 5-6:30 p.m. We will provide instructions on how to set up appointments with your legislators when you register. Your legislators will be alerted that you will be visiting their offices between 5-6:30 p.m. If you don t see them in their offices, you will at the reception! Then, join members of the General Assembly, the Maryland bishops, and other Church leaders at 6:30-8 p.m. for a reception in the Miller Senate Office Building. Participants are welcome to attend the reception even if they can t participate in the briefings or legislator meetings earlier in the day. The event is free but registration is required. 6 Income Tax Information The parish will provide an official 2017 statement of contributions for all those who request it. Please fill out this form and drop it in the collection. Statements cover all contributions which are identifiable those made through the envelope system and Faith Direct. Statements will begin to be processed toward the end of January. NAME: ADDRESS: ENVELOPE #: Rice Bowl Distribution for Lent The St. Hugh School of Religious Education and the Ladies of Charity will again be coordinating the annual Lenten Rice Bowl Program to benefit the Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Besides CRSʹs international service programs, they also provide local grants to Archdiocesan food pantries. This year the St. Hugh Food Pantry received a grant of $520. Rice bowls will be handed out after all the Masses this weekend and collected the weekend after Easter. Thank you for your continued support of this very important Lenten Program. February New Socks Collection: The Ladies of Charity will again be sponsoring the new socks collection for patients at Spring Grove Hospital for the mentally ill. We need both men s and women s socks. Many patients come to this facility with just the clothes on their backs and socks are very much needed by the Volunteer Service at the hospital. There are collection boxes at the back of church to place your sock donations. Support for Springhill Lake Elementary School Summer Reading Program: The Ladies of Charity will again be collecting new and gently used childrenʹs books (Kindergarten through 5th grade reading levels) to be given to participants in the summer reading program to take home. Boxes will be placed in the back of church for book collection. Thanks for your help. ST.
