Fr. Joseph Hlubik Weekend Celebrant: Fr. Kevin P. Ashe Marta Barkhausen Business Manager Ginny Mielnicki, Parish Secretary Rectory Office Hours: Monday through Friday 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM John Paglione, Coordinator of Education and Liturgy Masses: Saturday: 5:15 pm Sunday: 8:00 am, 9:15 am, 11:30 am Confessions: Saturday 4:30 to 5:00 PM Marriages: This great sacrament of vocation is a joyous time, but also a time of very serious spiritual preparation. The responsibility assumed by the couple and the Church is significant. While many focus on the day of the wedding, we seek to prepare for the second day and beyond. The Bishops of NJ have adopted a policy to assist in this preparation. Attendance at Engaged Encounter, Pre-Cana, or another approved marriage prep program, and individual sessions with a priest or deacon are required of all couples. Couples should contact the Rectory one year in advance of the intended marriage, and before finalizing other detail particularly reception facilities. Baptisms: The Church shares the joy of families in the birth of children, and, with their parents takes seriously the responsibility of bringing them up in the faith. Parents seeking baptism for their children are to attend Baptismal Prep Class. This can be arranged by calling the parish office. Parents should be registered members of the parish. Godparents, those who represent the church in the life of the child, must be practicing Catholics, if they are married, they must have been married in the Church, practice the faith regularly, and must obtain a sponsor certificate from their home parish. Please choose Godparents with these criteria in mind. Anointing of the Sick: This sacrament is given for those facing serious illness or surgery, and for those of advanced years. If you or a family member is planning to enter the hospital, please see one of the priests following Mass or call the rectory if you would like to receive this sacrament. Funerals: Please call the Rectory.

3 From Father Doug: One of the most difficult times in the life of a family is the death of a loved one. Raw emotions emerge, sadness and anger often misdirected, and faith that has not been practiced is quickly called upon to console. One of the greatest gifts one can give is to have planned your final details so that no decisions need to be made at the time of grief. The liturgy of the Church reminds us that in birth and death we are all equal. As Job said, Naked I came forth from my mother s womb, and naked shall I go back there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD! The Funeral Liturgy prescribed by the Church is the Funeral Mass in the presence of the body followed by interment or entombment. In recent years the Church has permitted the increasing popular idea of cremation, provided the remains are treated through the process exactly as a body would be, including intact interment in a consecrated place of rest. Distribution of ashes and scattering are not permitted. Again, treating the cremated remains as intact as would be a body. During the Mass the first thing that happens is that the casket is covered with a large cloth called a pall. It reminds us that in baptism we are all the same rich and poor. There are no pictures around the casket during Holy Mass, flowers should be at the altar in usual fashion, they are not brought into church from the funeral home. In cremation the same preferences apply. The urn should be covered with a pall, or as we do, the ideal is for them to be placed in a casket like box called an Ossuary, again highlighting that we are all equal before the altar. Pictures and flowers are lovely at wakes and gatherings after burial, but do not belong in church. It always makes me sad to see the flowers piled in the back of the cemetery after a day s funerals have been completed. Much better is to support a worthy cause with gifts that give a real tangible benefit in lieu of flowers. These guidelines are set fairly firmly by the Church because the Funeral Mass speaks on its own, and these distractions confuse the meaning. The Funeral Mass is to pray for the soul of the departed, for the forgiveness of their sins, and a quick journey to the presence of God. Certainly an aspect is remembering and celebrating the person s life; what they need, however, is our prayers. A Funeral Mass celebrated according to the Rites of the Church is something that cannot be improved. We give opportunity for the family to select music, readings, people to participate, and Father Joe and I both spend time learning about the person. Some of these meetings have been among the most meaningful times in my priesthood. One of St. Benedict s motto s was Memento mori, Remember you will die. In doing so you can really, truly live fully in this life and be happy with God forever in the next. The Rectory Office will be closed On Monday, January 21st In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Like the early Christians we must move into a sometime hostile world armed with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Martin Luther King, Jr. RIGHT TO LIFE Right to Life Ministry meets on the last Thursday of each Month in Msgr. My hour has not come yet come. His mother said to the servers, Do whatever he tells you. Mary was not only speaking to the servers at Cana but to us as well. If there is anything like a formula for success in life and in eternity, it must be Mary s words: Do whatever he tells you. 5 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 20, 2019 A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory. 1saiah 62:2 TODAY S READINGS First Reading As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading All the varied gifts in the Christian community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in Cana, Jesus replenishes the wine supply (John 2:1-11). SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Agnes; Martin Luther King Jr. Day Tuesday: Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children; World Youth Day Wednesday: St. Vincent; St. Marianne Cope Thursday: St. Francis de Sales Friday: The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle; Week of Prayer for Christian Unity ends; Saturday: Ss.
