2 Page Two June 24, 2012 The Twelfth Sunday in ordinary time gets bumped today. Forget it. Who needs it anyhow? June 24 is a major feast day, the Birth of St. John the Baptist, which hasn t fallen on a Sunday in eleven years. The only other birthdays that the Church observes are that of Jesus on December 25 and that of His Mother Mary on September 8. That s pretty good company. The Church obviously believes that the birthday of the Baptist deserves our special attention. The Gospel of the Mass during the day tells us the story about how John received his name. When the time came to circumcise the child, neighbors and relatives expected him to be dubbed with his Dad s name, Zechariah. It didn t happen. Elizabeth, his Mom, insisted: No, he is to be called John. This was the name indicated by the angel who had appeared to Zechariah that he and his wife would have a child in spite of their incredible old age. He was probably about 40; and she must have been near 35. The name John in Hebrew is YEHOHANAN. Please don t ask me to pronounce it. It means The Lord is gracious or maybe better, The Lord shows favor. After the kid was given this name, Zechariah offered a striking prayer of thanks and praise to God, which is always included in the Church s Morning Prayer (Luke 1: 68-79). Within the prayer Zechariah turned to his wee bit of a son and said: You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. The youngster was off and running. FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR JOHN WHO? John the Baptist had the privilege as the herald of Jesus the Christ to point Him out as the Father s gift to us, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Jesus in His person fulfills the meaning of the name John. The birthday of the Baptist relates to the birthday of the Christ. The Church selected the time of the winter solstice to celebrate the birth of Jesus because from that time the days gradually grow longer; the amount of daylight increases. The Church selected the time of the summer solstice to celebrate the birth of John because from this time the days gradually grow shorter; the amount of daylight diminishes. This symbolizes the words of the precursor in speaking of the Savior: He must increase while I must decrease. (John 3:30) The names of John s parents also have significance. Elizabeth means God has sworn, or God has promised by oath, and recalls the solemn promise God made to send the Messiah. Zechariah means God remembers, and indicates the faithfulness of God in keeping His promise. During the celebration of the Mass on this Sunday in which we recall the birth of the Baptist our hearts should be filled with thanks and praise to the Father for the gracious favor He shows to us in the person of His beloved Son. Because of all the events which led up to and followed the birth of St. John the Baptist, we too have a name of great significance, and that name is Catholic. GOD BLESS OUR PARISH, FR. If you already haven t done so it would be an idea time to get your personally inscribed grotto stones. Why not honor those special people in our lives with a gift that will last a lifetime. Or perhaps if you have recently lost a loved one, have them remembered with a lasting engraved stone in their memory. We will be taking Grotto Stone orders now. We expect to have any new engraved stones ready and installed by mid to late September.
