5 Page Five Dear Padre, Why an annulment is needed I m not Catholic and already divorced. Why do I need an annulment to remarry? You need an annulment because the Church presumes that your marriage is valid. If two baptized Methodists marry before a Methodist minister, the Church presumes that the marriage is valid and sacramental. The Catholic Church recognizes Protestant baptisms in the same way. For this reason we do not rebaptize Protestant converts or remarry a couple when one or both enter the Catholic Church. The annulment process is not a Catholic divorce ; it is an investigation of a relationship to see if at the point of the wedding, a true (valid) marriage was effected. If a marriage is valid according to Christ, it cannot be annulled. If, however, something was lacking from the very beginning, the marriage was not valid and can be annulled, freeing the parties to remarry. For a marriage to be valid, the spouses must: 1. be free to marry and freely exchange their consent; 2. in consenting to marry, intend to be together for life, to be faithful to each other, and to be open to children; 3. intend the good of each other; and give their consent in the presence of two witnesses and before a properly authorized minister. Through the annulment process the Church tribunal determines whether a marriage was valid. This is the same for all marriages, whether between Catholics, Christians, or non baptized adults. FR. PATRICK KEYES, CSsR BUILDING THE KINGDOM OF GOD Work Smarter, Not Harder! Jesus promises for the weary and burdened! Instead of trying to work longer and harder, you can learn to work smarter and accomplish even more than you thought possible. Learn about evangelization strategies that work. Come to be inspired, connected and equipped for ministry in your parish. Inspire Connect Equip Who: Clergy, parish leadership, parish minister, evangelization teams and anyone who is interested in building the Kingdom of God. When: June 14th from 1 pm to 3 pm OR 6:30 pm to 8 :30 pm At Our Lady of Lourdes, 2222 Genesee St. Utica. Call Mary Hallman at to reserve a space. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THANK YOU to all the teachers and staff in our parish Faith Formation ministry. We could not have had the marvelous program for our kids in religious education if it was not for all of you. As teachers you did an outstanding job and I am grateful to Mrs. Laura Mack our DFF and her assistant Mrs. Jean Bauer for coordinating the program, They are getting ready for another successful vacation Bible week this summer. And I am also most grateful for the good work of our R.C.I.A. teachers Kathy Chase, Pat Johnson and Debbie Pinti. We are blessed with wonderful generous people who share their time and talent to assist the parents of our kids in insuring that they grow in knowledge of the teachings of the Church. The first reading tells of the wisdom of God being beside God as his craftsman at the dawn of creation. The second reading reminds us that we have peace with God through our faith in Jesus Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches the disciples that the Holy Spirit will guide them in the way of all truth. The Trinity three persons in one God is a mystery that the best minds of the Church cannot adequately explain. Still, we are blessed by this mystery. The Trinity offers us a model for living. Just as the three persons of the Trinity are united as one, we must strive to live in ever-greater unity with God and one another. There is so much more to God than we can ever comprehend. I know that many received the letter on the HOPE Appeal for It is important that we all give a gift to this year s HOPE Appeal. I know that some have not given in the past, but I am hoping that we can all give a little to this year s Appeal. As you know our parish goal is $80, and if we all give a gift we can successfully exceed our goal. Let s just do that for 2016! View the HOPE APPEAL 2016 Video at

6 Page 6 ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY Our next scheduled meeting will by May 26th at 6 pm. It will also be a covered dish supper. Please plan to attend and join us for a delightful evening. Thank you for your continued help and support...and God bless you. Pope Francis Speaks to our hearts!! The Spirit of Mercy and Love PENTECOST The Holy Spirit teaches us to see with the eyes of Christ, to live as he lived, to understand life as he understood it. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by the Holy Spirit, to allow him to speak our heart and say: God is love, God is waiting for us, God is Father, who loves us as a true father loves, who loves us truly and always forgives. Let us listen to the Holy Spirit and move forward on the path of love, mercy and forgiveness. Indeed, when we open ourselves to God in the inmost depths of our being, our heart is converted to God and transformed by the Spirit. ST. PETER S CHURCH HISTORY The 3rd Annual Adoration Celebration Sunday, May 22nd at 2:30 pm in the main church at Transfiguration. On October 27, 1974, our Pastor Rev. Msgr. Francis J. Culkin announced plans to compile a concise history of St. Peter s Church and its people; and graciously placed the author in charge of the demanding and very involved project. The Chronology is the second fruit of that announcement. The first was the privilege of assisting our Pastor in reporting to the Diocese of Syracuse in February 1976 a complete history of our parish, the first time such histories have been called for from ALL parishes in many years. In 1911 and again in 1926 the Catholic Sun published history of our Diocese. The source for the greater part of these was a History of the Diocese of Syracuse edited by Mr. William P>H> Hewitt and published in In addition, a small volume on St. John s Church Utica was written by a Very Rev. J.S.M.. Lynch. This was a beautiful writing and is extremely hard to find, as is Hewitt s. With the possible exception of these works, and 2 or 3 page reference in various Histories of Oneida County (the coverage of the Catholic Church in Durant s is the best.), records of the early port-jesuit or parochial Church in our area are scanty and incomplete of the Catholic Church in the Northeastern US. Quebec was the seed, Baltimore the growth, (continues next week). Visit us at stmarysstpeters.com
