4 Page four Dear Padre, Sometimes a priest at Mass skips (or forgets) the blessing after the Confiteor: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. I learned this prayer is important because it prepares us to receive the Eucharist. Is that correct? The penitential act at Mass concludes with the priest s absolution, but it lacks the efficacy of the Sacrament of Penance (GIRM 51). In The Tridentine Missal, the Confiteor was followed by a version of the formula in use today and a second formula: May the almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of all our sins. This second, quasiabsolution is omitted in the current rite, along with the sign of the cross that accompanied it. Jesus told Simon and his companions to lower their nets after they had caught nothing. When their boats began to sink with so many fish, Simon fell at Jesus knees and said, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man (Luke 5:8). Often, when entering God s presence, we are so filled with awe that we become aware of our own sinfulness. Yet our primary purpose in gathering for worship is not to acknowledge our sins but to acknowledge God s mercy. Thus, the penitential act exists to unite the faithful as a community and to prepare them to listen to God s word and to celebrate the Eucharist. DID YOU KNOW? That in both Catholic and Protestant traditions. Joseph is regarded as the patron saint of workers and fathers. Pope Pius XI declared him to be both the patron and the protector of the Catholic Church in addition to his patronages of the sick and of a happy death, due to the belief that he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary. Also. That the Catholic church not being able to ordain women to the priesthood is a doctrine of the Faith. YOU CAN LOOK IT UP!! The Encyclical Ordinatio Sacerdotalis by Pope John Paul II in 1944 clarified that Jesus chose only men as His apostles, thus no grounds to change this. FROM THE Maintenance Department In order to expedite any repairs to the Church pews and kneeler, we would like to ask for your help in identifying any repairs that are needed. Located at the front and side vestibules are maintenance request forms. Please identify the pew number which is located at the end of each pew. Thank you in advance for your help. Mark LaGasse The first reading from Acts recounts Peter explaining to the crowd that Jesus is the Messiah promised by God, sitting on David s throne. In the second reading, we are reminded that Jesus is the lamb whose precious blood has ransomed us from sin. In the Gospel, Jesus reveals himself who were traveling to Emmaus in the breaking of the bread. To appreciate who Jesus is in God s plan of salvation, we must look to the Hebrew Scriptures the written word of God fulfilled by Jesus, the Word of God becomes flesh. With gratitude and the deepest of appreciation that we have been redeemed by Jesus, the spotless unblemished lamb, let us strive to build up the kingdom of God on earth each day by living as faithful disciples of Jesus. Scripture confirms Jesus identity as the only Begotten Son of God! Congratulations to the members of our First Holy Communion class and to their wonderful parents who brought them to all their classes. They are a beautiful example of God s love as they come forward to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. I want to THANK our First Communion teachers Katherine Connor, Donna Shields and Christina Stutman and also Jean Bauer and Laura Mack for a marvelous job of preparing the students for their big day and the future. Let us pray for the members of this year s Confirmation class and their families. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred by Bishop Robert Cunningham at our 5:00 pm Vigil Mass on Saturday May 13th.. Speaking of prayers please continue to pray for all of our sick and homebound. And also pray for Vocations to the Religious Life and Priesthood and for one another. May God bless You always as do I! Fr.H
5 Page 5 ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY Dear Women of the Parish: Our final meeting before summer break is May 18th. We will have our traditional covered dish to pass. This meeting, in lieu of a guest speaker, we decided to resurrect the Pound Auction. We are putting a twist on it. Purchase an item up to $5.00 max, wrap it, and bring it to the meeting. We will have a bidding of $2.00 limit. This is a lot of fun and the proceeds are for the treasury. Our Bi-Annual Bake Sale is May 20-21st. We need coverage before and after the Masses to sell the items. Please mark your calendars. You help is needed. We are planning on having a few Basket Raffles. Suggestions are...patriotic one, a Kitchenery one, maybe Back to School one. If interested in this project, call Mary Wahl. Maybe you have more ideas!!!! Monday May 1st 6:15 PM St. Peter s Church The children of our parish will present a May Crowning Ceremony in honor of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. Our Faith Formation students in grades 1 and 2 will lead a procession up the main aisle to bring flowers to a statue of Mary, and to place a crown of flowers on her. Youth Choir Singers from St. Mary's-St. Peter's Parish will lead in singing four Marian hymns, including the traditional May Crowning song, "Bring Flowers of the Fairest (Mary, Queen of the May)." The Youth Singers will also sing four secular songs on the themes of kindness and caring as a special tribute to our Mother Mary, who loves and cares for us. All are welcome to attend the ceremony. The May Crowning Ceremony is a lovely, traditional way to usher in the month of May, a month which is dedicated to Mary. We hope to see you there! Pope Francis Speaks to our hearts!!
