Help them to welcome new experiences and new friends with joy. Amen. OUR LADY OF SORROWS September 15th and 16th A DAY of PRAYER AND FASTING Rev. Robert Cunningham, Bishop of Syracuse has asked every parish to celebrate a Mass on the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows with the intention of the Church asking the forgiveness and of the healing of victims of abuse. I ask that it be a day of prayer and fasting for all Catholics as suggested by our Holy Father, Pope Francis to open our eyes and our hearts to other people s sufferings and to overcome the thirst from power & possessions that are so often roots of evil. May fasting and prayer open our ears to the hushed pain felt by children, young people and disabled,

4 Page Four Dear Padre, If, for economic reasons, a couple wants to purchase a home together before they marry, is it permissible for hem to live together? In the recent past, it would have been rare to find an unmarried man and woman living together as roommates. Today, however, it s fairly common. Sometimes these arrangements are dictated by finances a homeowner or renter finds he or she can t afford to live alone so the person seeks a roommate. Other times it s a result of friendship. In many ways this is a positive development it shows we ve learned to have intimate friendships that don t involve sex. There s nothing immoral about inhabiting the same home. However, when a joint real-estate venture is more than a business deal and involves eventual marriage, there are hazards. It s important for the couple to be very clear about what they re doing. Buying a home is a huge commitment. They should remember that real estate is one commitment, marriage is another, and they aren t interchangeable. It would be easy for one partner to insist on the house for economic reasons when the joint purchase is really an attempt to seal the marriage deal in advance. Buying a house together could create marriage pressures, making it difficult to back out due to a change of heart. Such arrangements are full of possibilities for misunderstanding, disappointment, and anger. Unless it s clear that joint home ownership is until marriage just a business deal (and clear legal contracts are drawn up), it s not advisable. SAVE THE DATE October 13, 2018 Womans Day Retreat St. Peter s Church Hall. Father John Rose, Director of Christ the King Retreat House and Pastor of St. Vincent de Paul s Church in Syracuse will facilitate the day of Prayer. The retreat will be open to all area parishes. Seating is limited. Reservations will be needed. More information will follow soon. Reflections for the 24th Sunday Peter is rightly recognized as a great saint. Many see themselves reflected in his flawed humanity and find hope in the fact That, despite all his struggles, he ultimately became a saint. But what makes Peter a great saint is not his flaws, but his deep faith in Christ. It is the fact that he finally came after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. This truth is evident when we recall that it was Peter who denied and deserted Jesus in his time of need. There, the one who declares Jesus to be the Messiah proved himself to be a fairweather friend. So great St. Peter s misunderstanding of Jesus and his mission that he even felt able to rebuke him. But in one of the most shocking Gospel interactions, Jesus turns on Peter in the strong way; Get behind me Satan! You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. Strong words indeed! But deserved by Peter for he is totally out of step with Christ. As we hear this Gospel, it is good for us to ask what we believe about Jesus. If we simply see him as a prophet, can we truly believe inn the reconciliation offered through his cross and Resurrection? Or are we like Peter, happy to confess that he is the Christ but unable to embrace the fullness of what that means? We can learn much from Peter. And although we might be attracted by his flawed humanity, we should not ignore the work that God has done in strengthening and empowering him to be a disciple and evangelist. Like Peter we, too need to let Christ change us if we are to let go of the human way of thinking. Baptism is never just a moment in time or a cultural expectation, but the Christ.

5 Page Five ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY We will resume our monthly meetings beginning September 6 pm in the parish hall. At that time we will finalize our Bazaar plans and logistics for our great and exciting BAZAAR. Please consider joining us. We can use the talent and energy of so many ladies in our parish. KNITTING AND CROCHETING GROUP St. Mary s/st. Peter s Altar Rosary Society has formed a group to Knit and Crochet hats, mittens and scarves for the local school children We are looking to add knitters, crocheters, and those who want to learn how to join our group. Do you like to sew? Do you have a sewing machine just sitting idle waiting for a project??? We are also expanding our talents to have sewers join us. We have several ideas to make items on the sewing machine, that can be sold at our craft show. Contact Cate Powers at Pope Francis Speaks to Families!! Are You Praying? My question to you is this: Are You praying? Do you know that you can speak with Jesus, with Father, with the Holy Spirit as you speak to a friend? Not just any friend, but the greatest and most trusted of your friends!.. Once again I invite you to encounter the Lord by frequently reading sacred Scripture. If you are not already in the Habit of doing so, begin with the Gospels.. Read a line or two each day. Let God s word speak to your heart and enlighten your path. You will discover that God can be seen also in the faces of your brothers ands sisters, especially Those who are most forgotten: The poor, the hungry, those who thirst, strangers, the sick those imprisoned. Have you ever had this experience? Encountering God in Prayer, the reading of the Bible, and in the fraternal life will help you better know the Lord and yourselves. Like the disciples on the way to Emmanus, the Lord s voice will make your eyes to recognize his presence and to discover the loving plan he has for your everyday life. ATTENTION LADIES!
