Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You ll find no race of people left out; you ll find no language on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the birthday of the church. In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul assures us in today s second reading that all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit. When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. In the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches us to act with mercy, compassion and love. Help the Cardinal s Appeal apply the Beatitudes throughout our communities. To date, 153 families have made their commitment to the Appeal effort in our parish. From Your Pastor 5/15/2016 With the reappearance of the sun on Sunday last week we can finally begin to believe that spring is here and with it summer fast approaching. Having a parochial school brings a certain rhythm to a parish s life. This weekend we have first communion for our children from St. Stephen s. Tuesday is the annual golf outing held by the school. In just a few weeks now our June 4th Family Mass will be a special celebration with the 8th grade, a Baccalaureate Mass for them, as they will graduate on June 10th and the summer will truly be upon us. It is hard for me to believe I soon will have completed my first year as the pastor of St. Stephen s School! I want to thank all the parents, the teachers and the administration of St. Stephen s for all the support they have given me as I learned the ropes of being the pastor of the school. Spring Concert Several people were wondering last week about the Spring Choir Concert, why the tickets cost money, why there are two tiers of seating and why we need fund raisers in a parish which pays its bills. Although this might not be clear until we issue our first financial report next year, St. Monica s has ALWAYS had fundraisers. Our average collection is about $7,000 per week. Definitely not enough to pay for the salaries, utilities, supplies and and programs for the parish. Things like the Christmas bazaar have always raised money for the parish, and we depend on fundraising to balance the budget and pay those bills! So the parish council, in collaboration with the choir, put together the idea of a spring concert, with the possibility of getting premiere seating and a chance to meet and greet the singers at a cocktail party beforehand. I hope everyone will join us. It promises to be a wonderful evening on June 5th. Parish Center Some of you might have noticed, walking down 80th street, that there are workers in the St. Monica Convent. After the sisters left a few years ago, one winter the heat was left off by the previous maintenance man and the pipes froze. This severely damaged the building. Insurance agreed to pay to return it to the convent it once was, but when I went I there the first time, I realized it could be something so much more: a parish center, with meeting rooms for religious education, groups, parish offices, and a chapel. Workers are currently repairing the convent/parish center and by September 1st we hope to move all parish offices out of the rectory and have them in a new facility on 80th St. Part of that renovation will require additional funds most notably for the dining room/event space and kitchen, which we intend to name the Angelo Room after Fr. Angelo Gambatese OFM. More information on that to follow! Page 3 -Fr Baker

4 Invitations, News, Thoughts and Prayers Page 4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Order and presbyter are not everyday words in our vocabulary, since we think of order as a quality of life rather than a collective noun, and priest usually does just fine in everyday conversation. Yet each word has deep roots in our tradition. At an ordination we select men for service to the community. Ordo is a Latin word drawn not from pagan religious life but from Imperial Rome. It meant a distinct body standing apart from the people, such as a body of people responsible for civil governance, senators for example. Think of the selectmen or board of governors in your civic home, and you will get the idea. The church borrowed the term to describe the place of certain people within the people of God, thus the order of deacons, the order of presbyters, and even the order of virgins, catechumens, widows, neophytes, penitents, and so on, as distinct groups within the church. Just as ancient Rome had various uniforms for the ranks and stations in civil life, so too did certain garments give clues to membership in an order in the church. So, our tradition favors the idea of an ordination liturgy not as receiving something so much as being received. This is clearly expressed in the liturgy. The kiss of peace is given only by the ordaining bishop and priests to the newly ordained, not by the faithful, the deacons, or the concelebrating bishops who are present. Rev.
