FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provided by the Hope Appeal Funds Today s gospel challenges us to love one another as I have loved you. Jesus is our model and He asks us to lay down our life (our time, attention, opinions and needs) for each other. This is the sacrament of the family, when God is made visible in our sacrificial love for one another. Thursday, May 10th we celebrate this feast!!
4 Page Four Dear Padre, Is it acceptable for a Catholic healthcare professional to be employed by a hospital that performs abortions, provided she has nothing to do with these procedures? You raise an important issue about intentional involvement in wrongdoing, and my response extends to many other life situations. A person may work in a hospital that performs abortions, provided that he or she is not involved with the procedures. Because performing abortions is only one part of what the hospital does, a person may work there contributing his or her expertise to other areas of health care. If the circumstances were different, and the place of employment was dedicated to terminating pregnancies through abortion, it would be wrong to work there. My response is guided by the principle of cooperation. It asserts that we may never intentionally cooperate approvingly in the morally wrong action of another person. To help another and approve of his immoral action is termed formal cooperation. Cooperating with another reluctantly, disapproving of what he is doing, is called material cooperation. A person may never cooperate formally in another s wrongdoing because, in doing so, he or she also knowingly performs an immoral action. Some material cooperation may be morally justified, but not if a person s cooperation is necessary for an immoral action to occur. The Church advises Catholics to avoid any level of moral cooperation. While many don t have the luxury to consider employment elsewhere, other considerations include: Is the individual creating scandal by employment at this hospital? Has the individual made his or her moral understanding known to this hospital? Located at 209 Elizabeth Street, Suite 102 Open: Mon to Friday, 9:30am to 5 pm Saturday 9:30 am to 3 pm Call for mail order In the first reading, Peter speaks of fearing the Lord and doing his work, and the Holy Spirit comes upon the believers. Peter commands even the Gentiles who have received the Holy Spirit to be baptized. In John s First Letter, he writes of loving one another because God is love, and he abides in us when we love. Jesus explains in the Gospel that we are commanded to love as he has loved by laying down our lives for each other. The members of our Pastoral Care Committee (PCA) have been faithfully meeting this past year and have come up with many good ideas for the parishes. Our PCA consists of the Priests and members from St. John s Church in Camden, St. Patrick s in Taberg, St. Joseph s in Lee Center, St. Paul s, St. Mary s, St. Peter s, Transfiguration and St. John s of Rome and St. Leo s St. Ann s Holland Patent. Beginning July 1st, 2018 all of the parishes will have new Mass schedules, The schedule for our parish will be Vigil Mass on Saturday at 5:00 pm. On Sunday we will have the 8:00 am Mass and we will bring together our present 10:00 am Mass and our 11:30 am Mass into a 10:30 am Sunday Mass. With the coming of the beautiful flowers of May comes our need once again to have our annual HOPE APPEAL. Our parish goal for this year is $78, The Parish goal is down from last year which is a blessing for our parish. This Appeal is most necessary to do the work of the Lord within our diocesan Church. I invite anyone who can afford to join me in matching my annual gift of $ I make this annual sacrifice because I realize the good and necessary work which is supported by the Hope Appeal. After you pray please consider joining me in this sacrifice for our Blessed Lord. Father H.

Call for more info Pope Francis Speaks to Families! Protect Your Families Our world needs...holy and loving families to protect the beauty and truth of the family in God s plan and to be a support and example for other families. Every threat to the family is a threat to society itself. The future of humanity, as St. John Paul II often said, The future passes through the family. So protect you families! Protect your families! See in them your country s greatest treasure and nourish them always by prayer and the grace of the sacrament. ENRICHING THE CHURCH Pastoral Letter on the Role of the Family in the life of the Church of Syracuse and Beyond (Continued) While it is true, It is, above all, the Church as Mother that gives birth to, educates and builds up the Christian family, by putting into effect in its regard the saving mission which she has received from the Lord, it is also true that it is the family that enriches the Church by forming a domestic or a little church of its own. In order to do so, the family must turn to God for help, for the grace He desires to give us. Pope Francis states, If a family is centered on Christ, he will unify and illumine its entire life. Moments of pain and difficulty will be experienced in union with the Lord s cross, and his closeness will make it possible to surmount them St. Peter s Church Parish Office St. Peter s Fax rstpeter@twcny.rr.com Office Hours: Monday, Thursday and Friday 8:00am - 12:00 and 1:00-4:00pm Tuesday and Wednesday 8:00am - 3:45pm Religious Education Office Online at: spcdre@twcny.rr.com Senior Priests Retired: Father Donald H.
